Comparison of Samfilcon A and Balafilcon A Bandage Contact Lenses in Reducing Postoperative Symptoms After Pterygium Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To compare differences in postoperative pain, foreign body sensation, photophobia, and lacrimation between balafilcon A and samfilcon A bandage contact lenses (BCLs) in the early stage following pterygium surgery. METHODS: A total of 66 eyes with pterygium conjunctival grafts fixed with sutures were included in this study, comprising 32 eyes fixed with samfilcon A and 34 eyes fixed with balafilcon A. Demographic data, postoperative corneal epithelialization time, and subjective discomfort, such as pain (using the visual analog scale [VAS]), were recorded and compared. RESULTS: Sig…

The Clinical Manifestation of p.Asp50Asn Heterozygous Mutation of GJB2 Gene in 3 Members of a Family Is Similar to That of Clouston Syndrome.

Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome has genetic heterogeneity, and the clinical manifestations of some patients may overlap with Clouston syndrome. A 34-year-old female patient came to our department with a complain of "sparse hair, rough skin, photophobia and deafness for more than 30 years." We found that the proband and two other family members (57-year-old mother and 4-year-old daughter) had similar clinical manifestations: systemic hair loss, generalized skin hyperkeratosis, especially in the metacarpophalangeal area. Subungual hyperkeratosis, finger/toenail dystrophy, as well as…

Symptoms of itching, foreign body sensation, tearing, photophobia, discharge, burning, conjunctival injection, chemosis, giant papilla, keratopathy and intraocular pressure were evaluated weekly. Anterior stromal puncture in the treatment of bullous keratopathy: six-month follow-up.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of anterior stromal puncture to treat patients with symptomatic bullous keratopathy. METHODS: Fourteen patients with bullous keratopathy who had decreased vision and were or were not awaiting penetrating keratoplasty were evaluated before and 1, 4, 12, and 24 weeks after anterior stromal punctures with a 25-gauge needle. The patients were questioned about pain intensity, foreign-body sensation, and photophobia. Biomicroscopy, esthesiometry, and pachymetry results were evaluated. The results before and after the punctures were compared us…

Chediak-Higashi syndrome - a report of two cases with unusual hyperpigmentation of the face.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder due to a qualitative defect in leucocyte function characterized clinically by partial oculocutaneous albinism, recurrent bacterial infections, photophobia etc. The diagnostic feature is the presence of abnormal giant intracytoplasmic granules in neutrophils and their precursors. Here we report this syndrome in two siblings who presented with an unusual hyperpigmentation of the face and extremities.

The not so hidden impact of interictal burden in migraine: A narrative review.

Migraine is a highly prevalent neurological disease of varying attack frequency. Headache attacks that are accompanied by a combination of impact on daily activities, photophobia and/or nausea are most commonly migraine. The headache phase of a migraine attack has attracted more research, assessment tools and treatment goals than any other feature, characteristic, or phase of migraine. However, the migraine attack may encompass up to 4 phases: the prodrome, aura, headache phase and postdrome. There is growing recognition that the burden of migraine, including symptoms associated with the heada…

A case of primary congenital glaucoma: a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Primary congenital glaucoma generally presents with a classic clinical triad of photophobia, blepharospasm, and epiphora caused by the corneal changes that occur secondary to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). The condition typically presents bilaterally and is rarely hereditary. Onset is from age 2 months to 2 to 3 years. CASE REPORT: A 2-year, 5-month-old Hispanic boy presented with an enlarged right eye and an intermittent right exotropia, without tearing or photophobia. Examination also found high myopia and an optic nerve cup-to-disc ratio larger in the right than the left…

The 2012 PEMpix photograph competition award winner: making a case for pringles-flavored carrots.

This is a case report of a 14-year-old boy with autism who presented with photophobia. Physical examination was significant for bilateral corneal ulcers. Differential diagnosis of this chief complaint and the management of the suspected condition are discussed. This case was presented at the Section of Emergency Medicine Meeting at the National Conference and Exhibition of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2012 and was awarded first place in the PEMpix photograph competition.

X-Linked Ocular Albinism.

The prevalence of X-linked ocular albinism (XLOA) is about 1 in 60,000 males. It affects only the eyes; the color of the skin and hairs are normal. Patients usually present with reduced vision, photophobia, nystagmus, and strabismus. Many patients have problem in perceiving depth (stereoscopic vision). The visual loss is permanent, but XLOA is a nonprogressive disorder and visual acuity remains stable throughout life.

Traumatic Brain Injury and Vision.

Traumatic brain injury disrupts the complex anatomy of the afferent and efferent visual pathways. Injury to the afferent pathway can result in vision loss, visual field deficits, and photophobia. Injury to the efferent pathway primarily causes eye movement abnormalities resulting in ocular misalignment and double vision. Injury to both the afferent and efferent systems can result in significant visual disability.

Posterior polymorphous dystrophy and keratoglobus in a child.

A 13-year-old boy presented with gradually progressive deterioration of vision in both eyes, bilateral photophobia, and regular headaches. Clinical examination, anterior segment findings, and specular microscopy findings were consistent with the diagnosis of posterior polymorphous dystrophy and keratoglobus. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first pediatric case and the second case overall of the simultaneous occurrence of posterior polymorphous dystrophy and keratoglobus.

Hyperhomocysteinemia Increases Cortical Excitability and Aggravates Mechanical Hyperalgesia and Anxiety in a Nitroglycerine-Induced Migraine Model in Rats.

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome.

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome is likely underdiagnosed. A 13-year-old girl with no significant medical history had photophobia, ocular pain, and decreased visual acuity. Bilateral papilledema was present. Renal biopsy revealed interstitial nephritis. Immunosuppressive therapy was added (3 mg/kg/d of cyclosporine). One year later, visual acuity was 20/20 and findings were normal on ocular examination and laboratory tests.

Validation of an 8-item self-administered questionnaire for assessing migraine-related sensory hypersensitivities (MHQ-8).

BACKGROUND: In addition to headache, migraine patients often experience sensory hypersensitivity to external stimuli. While photophobia and phonophobia are part of the diagnostic criteria of migraine, many patients also exhibit cutaneous allodynia and osmophobia. However, the presence and intensity of these four hypersensitivities are rarely assessed systematically and simultaneously due to the lack of a simple and rapid self-report questionnaire. METHODS: We have identified existing questionnaires for allodynia, photophobia and phonophobia and selected one of each, that were translated in Fr…
