A St. Jude Medical Silzone was implanted in a 72-year-old female, suffering from mitral valve disease. Four months later, the patient had acute cardiac failure due to partial detachment of the prosthetic valve. Septic arthritis--infection with resulting inflammation within a joint--is an emergency. Not only can it rapidly destroy a joint or irreversibly impair joint function, it may be fatal. So although the condition is not common, affecting between 2 and 10 per 100,000 people each year in the UK, it must be recognised and tackled promptly. To estimate the number and cost of prosthetic joint infection hospitalizations in civilian US hospitals, we analyzed the 1997 to 2004 National Hospital Discharge Survey for the 996.66 International Classification of Diseases discharge code (infection or inflammatory reaction secondary to internal joint prosthesis). Prosthetic valve endocarditis remains as one of the most life-threatening complication of valve replacement surgery. Homografts are the valve of choice with a lower early risk of endocarditis than other valve substitutes, however they are not always available. Recently a new prosthesis has been introduced with a silver-coated sewing cuff (St. Jude Medical with Silzone coating). Silver is an antimicrobial agent that has been proven to reduce bacterial colonization. We present the case of a 48-year-old man with an early prosthetic valve endocarditis which affected an aortic stentless prosthesis.

We report a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-induced prosthetic valve endocarditis, which was successfully treated with aortic valve replacement using the Freestyle stentless bioprosthesis. The total root and stentless design of this bioprosthesis allows for more radical removal of infected tissue and easier treatment for annular abscess, while requiring less prosthetic materials than a conventional prosthesis. This bioprosthesis thus seems to be a valuable option for active endocarditis.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective procedure for restoring hip joint function and typically yields satisfactory clinical outcomes. Aseptic loosening and periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are severe complications following total hip arthroplasty. Accurate diagnosis of these complications requires the integration of various clinical data, including X-ray images, CT scans, medical records, and laboratory test results. To efficiently utilize these critical data and robustly diagnose postoperative complications, we present the Multi-modal Prosthetic Loosening Diagnostic Model (MPLDM).
