Single-photon emission computed tomography combined with computed tomography (SPECT/CT) in bone diseases.

Radionuclide bone scanning was proven effective many years ago. Its main advantages are good sensitivity, limited radiation exposure, and noninvasiveness. However, increased radionuclide uptake by a lesion is not specific, and differentiating malignant from nonmalignant disorders may therefore be difficult. An additional structural imaging study is often needed to establish the final diagnosis. Furthermore, the limited resolution of radionuclide bone scanning images does not allow accurate localization of the lesions. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) combined with computed to

The superiority of magnetic resonance imaging in differentiating the cause of hip pain in endurance athletes.

The accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging of the hip was prospectively evaluated in 19 military subjects engaged in endurance training. These patients had hip pain, negative radiographs, and radionuclide bone scans consistent with femoral neck stress fracture. Twenty-two hips were identified as positive for femoral neck stress fracture by bone scan. Each patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging and 6-week follow-up plain radiographs of the hips. Magnetic resonance imaging studies differentiated femoral neck stress fractures from a synovial pit, iliopsoas muscle tear, iliopsoas tendinitis,

Cat-scratch disease in a child with unique magnetic resonance imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: To report a patient with cat-scratch disease and the associated radiological findings. PATIENT: A previously health 10-year-old boy presenting with fever and joint pain. RESULTS: The presence of multiple abnormal foci in the bone marrow were noted by magnetic resonance imaging. There was no correlation with either radionuclide or conventional radiographic imaging findings. The patient's condition was diagnosed as cat-scratch disease by the demonstration of elevated antibody titers to the causative organism, Bartonella (formerly Rochalimaea) henselae. CONCLUSION: Magnetic resonanc

[Functional imaging of cerebrospinal fluid pathology].

The most common problem addressed by dynamic radionuclide imaging of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) abnormalities is differentiating patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) from those with other forms of degenerative brain disorder who would clearly not benefit from surgical treatment by ventricular shunting. Radionuclide cisternography (RC) SPECT and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) SPECT are critically important for the diagnosis and therapy management of patients with chronic hydrocephalus. However, radionuclide imaging is helpful not only in identifying patients with NPH showing im…

Pertechnetate imaging following cimetidine administration in Meckel's diverticulum of the ileum.

The demonstration of secretory gastric mucosa in Meckel's diverticulum of the ileum in patients undergoing radionuclide imaging with 99mTc sodium pertechnetate is greatly improved with the prior administration of cimetidine. This results in enhanced accumulation of pertechnetate in the gastric mucosa along with reduced excretion of the radionuclide into the gastric lumen and, consequently, less intestinal radioactivity.

Radiopharmaceuticals Labelled with Copper Radionuclides: Clinical Results in Human Beings.

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography (PET) is an instrumental diagnostic modality developed around the positron-emitting radioisotopes of biologically important elements such as carbon, oxygen and nitrogen (11C, 15O, 13N). Among longer-lived PET radionuclides, 18F is by far the most commonly used radiotracer, extensively used for tumour imaging with FDG ([18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose) and also frequently investigated in the development of novel radiopharmaceuticals. Many other positron- emitting radionuclides with higher atomic numbers and longer half-lives have been investigated for both imagi

Calculation of right and left ventricular ejection fraction in infants and children by first pass radionuclide angiocardiography using self-synchronization method.

First pass radionuclide angiocardiography was utilized to calculate right and left ventricular ejection fraction in 74 infants and children. For the synchronization of radionuclide imaging with the cardiac cycle, the peaks and valleys of corrected ventricular time activity curve were adopted as the time reference points instead of R wave of electrocardiogram. Left ventricular ejection fractions obtained by the radionuclide technique correlated well with those derived from the contrast angiographic technique (r = 0.90), but right ventricular ejection fractions correlated less well (r = 0.74). T…

Radionuclide and angiographic assessment of pulmonary perfusion after Fontan procedure: comparative interim outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Right-side heart function is essentially externalized during extracardiac total cavopulmonary connection. The Fontan procedure has a certain impact on pulmonary hemoperfusion and may explain various postsurgical complications. In this study, alterations of pulmonary perfusion in patients undergoing the Fontan procedure were analyzed at the 5-year postoperative mark by radionuclide imaging and angiocardiography, and results of both methods were compared. METHODS: For 43 post-Fontan patients, perfusion ratios of each lung segment were calculated based on radionuclide imaging data. T…

Differential shunting in the diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus with Eisenmenger physiology by radionuclide angiography.

Radionuclide angiography and static whole body imaging performed with technetium-99m-labeled particulates can clearly demonstrate differential shunting in patients with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with Eisenmenger physiology. The anatomic arterial relationships in this condition which direct deoxygenated blood into the lower body (differential cyanosis) produce specific radionuclide images characterized by differential shunting of the technetium-99m-labeled particulates into the abdomen and lower extremity.

Parathyroid imaging with technetium-99m sestamibi.

The accurate identification of the location of hyperfunctioning parathyroid nodules is essential to the effective surgical treatment of hyperparathyroidism. Radionuclide imaging has played an important role in the detection of pathological parathyroid nodules. Sestamibi is a new radiopharmaceutical with a good affinity for parathyroid tissue that images hyperfunctioning parathyroid lesions as hot nodules. The double-phase protocol with early (ten minutes) and delayed (120 minutes) imaging is effective fordetecting the parathyroid lesions. The use of a pinhole collimator improves the sensitivit…

[Primary hyperparathyroidism: ultrasonography and scintigraphy].

Primary hyperparathyroidism is nowadays frequently diagnosed from screening biological work-up: it is due to a single parathyroid adenoma in nearly 90% of cases. There is increasing interest in the minimally invasive surgical approach with unilateral neck exploration. For such approaches preoperative localizing studies are mandatory. Ultrasound and radionuclide imaging are the most widely used procedures for this purpose. Ultrasound offers detailed anatomic imaging of the adenoma but may not be not able to detect some ectopic glands. Sonographic imaging features, as well as pitfalls and diagno…

Upper extremity DVT. Correlation of MR and nuclear medicine flow imaging.

The purpose of this study is to determine correlation between MR and nuclear medicine flow studies in the evaluation of upper extremity deep venous thrombosis. We retrospectively reviewed MR and radionuclide venography images obtained in 10 patients with suspected upper extremity venous thrombosis. In nine cases there was complete agreement in the identification of thrombus. In one case, MR images failed to identify a thrombus in the axillary vein adjacent to a port-a-cath. Good correlation between MR and radionuclide venography images in evaluation of upper extremity DVT is present in the maj

Targeted radionuclide therapy for patients with central nervous system metastasis: Overlooked potential?

Targeted radionuclide therapy is an emerging therapeutic concept for metastatic cancer that can be considered if a tumor can be delineated by nuclear medicine imaging and also targeted based on the expression of a particular target (thera-nostics). This mode of treatment can also compete with or supplement conventional radiotherapy, for example, if MRI does not fully capture the extent of the disease, including microscopic metastases. Targeted radionuclide therapy for patients with thyroid cancer, with certain somatostatin receptor 2-expressing tumors and with prostate-specific membrane antige

Somatostatin receptor imaging of olfactory neuroblastoma.

Neural-crest tumours, including neuroblastomas, express somatostatin receptors. This can be shown by radionuclide labelling of octreotide, a somatostatin analogue. Studies on imaging with this substance have dealt with childhood neuroblastomas. Olfactory neuroblastoma (aesthesioneuroblastoma) is a rare tumour in which somatostatin receptor content has not been analysed, nor have radionuclide methods for diagnostic purposes been described. We report a case of olfactory neuroblastoma, in which scanning with 111In-labelled octreotide was performed. A strong uptake was seen at the base of the skul

Liver imaging in the diagnosis of hepatic venous thrombosis in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.

Eleven patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria were studied by serial liver imaging. This disease has a generalized thrombotic tendency, and progressive diffuse hepatic venous thrombosis has been emphasized in recent studies. Radionuclide imaging proved to be of great help in establishing the diagnosis of hepatic venous thrombosis and following the progress of the disease process. Abnormal patterns in hepatic venous occlusion include (a) enlargement of the liver (especially the right lobe), (b) extrahepatic localization of radionuclide, and (c) areas of decreased uptake in the distri…

Copper Bis(thiosemicarbazonato)-stilbenyl Complexes That Bind to Amyloid-β Plaques.

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the presence of extracellular amyloid-β plaques. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with tracers radiolabeled with positron-emitting radionuclides that bind to amyloid-β plaques can assist in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. With the goal of designing new imaging agents radiolabeled with positron-emitting copper-64 radionuclides that bind to amyloid-β plaques, a family of bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands with appended substituted stilbenyl functional groups has been prepared. The ligands form charge-neutral and stable complexes with copper(II)

134Ce/134La Radiotheranostics from PET Surrogation of 225Ac to Auger and Conversion-Electron Therapy.

The development of 134Ce as both a positron-emitting surrogate for 225Ac and a therapeutic Auger and conversion-electron (ACE) emitter has accelerated rapidly in recent years, positioning it as one of the most versatile emerging radionuclides for targeted radiopharmaceuticals. Existing PET radionuclides used as imaging surrogates for 225Acincluding 64Cu, 68Ga, and 89Zrsuffer from kinetic, chemical, and dosimetric mismatches that limit their ability to accurately predict the biodistribution of the long-lived alpha emitter and the in vivo redistribution of its radioactive daughters.
