Deep Eutectic Solvent as Dual Solvent-Catalyst for Efficient Starch Esterification With Vinyl Laurate via Reactive Extrusion.

Fatty starch esters have attracted increasing interest as sustainable polymers due to their processing versatility and wide range of applications in biobased and biodegradable materials. However, conventional esterification methods often require highly polar organic solvents, operate under low starch concentrations, and require extended reaction times. We have developed a green approach to esterify wheat starch by reactive extrusion using a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on a mixture of benzyltriethylammonium chloride (BTEAC) and imidazole (IM). This DES acted both as a starch solvent

Over 20.5% Efficiency of Halogen-Free Solvent-Processed Organic Solar Cells Achieved by Anti-Solvent Strategy.

Halogen-free solvent processing is critical for the industrial-scale production of organic solar cells (OSCs) and environmental sustainability. However, such solvents typically result in suboptimal efficiency due to excessive molecular aggregation and unfavorable phase separation. To address this issue, an innovative anti-solvent (AS) strategy is proposed that accelerates photovoltaic material precipitation by timed introduction of orthogonal solvents to reduce solvent solubility and enhance volatilization, thereby avoiding prolonged aggregation. The resulting optimized phase separation and fi

Analysis of the solvent strength parameter (linear solvent strength model) for isocratic separations in reversed-phase liquid chromatography.

The solvent strength parameter (slope) and intercept (log kw) of the linear solvent strength model are determined for methanol-water (17 columns), acetonitrile-water (15 columns), acetone-water (7 columns), tetrahydrofuran-water (6 columns), and 2-propanol-water (4 columns) for varied compounds. It is shown that the linear region of the plots of the retention factor (log k) against the volume fraction of organic solvent (ϕ) is largely a system property independent of solute type for compounds with accessible retention factors. Solvent strength parameters for methanol (3.12 ± 0.12), acetonitril

Solvent-Templated Folding of Perylene Bisimide Macrocycles into Coiled Double-String Ropes with Solvent-Sensitive Optical Signatures.

A series of semirigid perylene bisimide (PBI) macrocycles with varied ring size containing two to nine PBI chromophores were synthesized in a one-pot reaction and their photophysical properties characterized by fluorescence, steady-state, and transient absorption spectroscopy as well as femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy. These macrocycles show solvent-dependent conformational equilibria and excited-state properties. In dichloromethane, the macrocycles prevail in wide-stretched conformations and upon photoexcitation exhibit symmetry-breaking charge separation followed by charge recombin

Correlating solvent dynamics and chemical reaction rates using binary solvent mixtures and two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy.

Two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy was performed on Vaska's complex (VC) and its oxygen adduct (V C-O2) in binary solvent mixtures of chloroform or benzyl alcohol in d6-benzene. The second order rate constants for oxygenation were also measured in these solvent mixtures. The rate constant in chloroform mixtures is linear with mole fraction within the error of the measurements but changes nonlinearly in benzyl alcohol mixtures, displaying a preference for the alcohol over benzene. The rate constants were compared with FTIR spectra of the carbonyl ligand and the frequency-frequency co

Novel organic solvent-responsive expression vectors for biocatalysis: application for development of an organic solvent-tolerant biodesulfurizing strain.

Biodesulfurization is an attractive alternative to hydrodesulfurization for lowering the sulfur content of petroleum products. However, the fuel oils are toxic to microorganisms, which have seriously hindered the application of biodesulfurization. Here, a solvent-tolerant desulfurizing bacterium, Pseudomonas putida DS23, was developed using one of the organic solvent-responsive expression vectors newly constructed for biocatalysis, in which gene expression could be regulated in an organic solvent-dependent fashion. The biodesulfurizing activity of P. putida DS23 could be induced by all the org

Relationship between solvent inhalation and antisocial behavior: special emphasis on two types of violence seen in solvent abusers.

Organic solvent inhalation is a serious problem among youths in Japan. It induces physical and mental disorders, and is related closely to crime and delinquency. The relationship between solvent inhalation and antisocial behavior was investigated in 75 youths. The subjects were divided into three groups according to the level of violent behavior and the time of appearance: a non-violent group, a late-onset group (violence occurred after the start of inhalation) and an early-onset group (violence had occurred before the start of inhalation). Various parameters were compared among the groups. Th

Choline chloride-DESs as green solvents for drug solubilization and formulation.

Drug solubility is a critical consideration in the development of drugs, as poor solubility can reduce efficacy by lowering bioavailability and making it more difficult for the body to absorb the drug. In view of various advantages, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have gained cumulative attention in pharmaceutics as drug excipients and for the solubility enhancement of drugs. Choline chloride (ChCl)-based DESs are prepared via the combination of ChCl as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) with hydrogen bond donors (HBD) such as urea, glycerol, lactic acid, etc., and consider as green choice as compar

Noninvasive Transdermal Vaccine Platform Using Deep Eutectic Solvents for Cancer Immunotherapy.

Cancer immunotherapy has attracted considerable attention since the early 2010s as an alternative to conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Among these approaches, cancer vaccines exert preventive and therapeutic effects by eliciting immune responses against tumor antigens. However, most cancer vaccines still rely on injection-based administration, which is associated with pain, the risk of secondary infection, and an increased burden on healthcare professionals. To address these limitations, we focused on noninvasive and convenient transdermal administ

Thermoresponsivity and cononsolvency of a minimal polymer model in mixed solvents.

We present computer simulations of a minimal polymer model in water-methanol mixed solvents that captures key features of the cononsolvency behavior of amphiphilic polymers in alcohol-water mixtures. Our results indicate that the effective interactions between polymer segments vary nonmonotonically with the water-methanol composition. Their temperature dependence, however, shows a transition from good-to-poor solvent conditions only in the aqueous, low-methanol regime, up to the solvent composition X* corresponding to the minimum of the lower critical solution temperature. Consistent with this

Kinetic Approach for Assessing Absolute Hydrogen Potential (pHabs) across Diverse Solvents.

The catalytic reactivity of the proton (H+) is often governed by its chemical potential, yet quantifying this potential across nonaqueous and mixed-solvent systems remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we present a framework for assessing the absolute potential of hydrogen (pHabs) using the electrophilic Car-D/Car-H substitution of phenol-d6 as a kinetic probe, applicable for wide-ranging solvents with diverse properties, categorized here according to their ability to solvate and stabilize sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and its conjugate base (HSO4-) as polar HSO4- stabilizers, polar HSO4- destabilize

Natural deep eutectic solvents as plasticizers for advancing sustainable strain sensors.

Sustainability is driving the replacement of fossil fuel-derived materials with renewable alternatives. Transient electronics designed for short-term wear, such as resistive sensors, are poised to benefit from such initiatives by improving their environmental footprint. Their fabrication principally from renewable constituents with established degradability would increase their environmental circularity and eliminate their accumulation as electronic waste owing to their eventual degradation. This raises an important question: which ecologically benign materials can be integrated into resistive

Electro-optic properties of graphene oxide liquid crystals in organic solvents.

Aqueous graphene oxide liquid crystals (GO-LCs) have demonstrated promising applicability in low-power display technologies owing to their extremely large Kerr coefficient. However, the electro-optic properties of GO dispersed in organic solvents have not been systematically investigated. In this study, the electro-optic properties of GO dispersed in organic solvents N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) were systematically investigated. Lyotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior was confirmed in DMF, ethanol and NMP, and their electro

Formulation of Innovative Spirit Varnishes Using Eutectic Systems as Alternative Solvents.

Eutectic systems have emerged as promising alternative solvents for numerous applications. However, despite their potential, their use in cultural heritage conservation remains scarce, and their suitability for spirit-type varnish formulations has not yet been comprehensively demonstrated. Therefore, this study explored the viability of eutectic systems as alternative solvents for spirit varnishes by comparing their performance with conventional solvents through physicochemical characterisation and a preliminary proof-of-concept. Following a screening process, the Menthol:Thymol (8:1) system (

Enzymatic synthesis of aromatic biobased polymers in green, low-boiling solvents.

Given the urge to accelerate the substitution of petrol-derived solvents not only in more traditional fields like pharmaceuticals, personal care, or electronics but also in innovative research processes, this work focuses on the utilisation of four biobased solvents as media for the enzymatic synthesis of aliphatic-aromatic polyesters. As building blocks, the lignin-derived diethyl-2,4-pyridinedicarboxylate was selected as the potentially biobased, aromatic component while more classical diols such as 1,4-butanediol and 1,8-octanediol were used as the aliphatic portion. Results show that among

Interplay of electrokinetic effects in nonpolar solvents for electronic paper displays.

HYPOTHESIS: Electronic paper displays rely on electrokinetic effects in nonpolar solvents to drive the displacement of colloidal particles within a fluidic cell. While Electrophoresis (EP) is a well-established and frequently employed phenomenon, electro-osmosis (EO), which drives fluid flow along charged solid surfaces, has not been studied as extensively. We hypothesize that by exploiting the interplay between these effects, an enhanced particle transport can be achieved. EXPERIMENTS: In this study, we experimentally investigate the combined effects of EP and EO for colloidal particles in n

Carbon dots for efficient detection of water content in organic solvents.

The trace amount of water in organic solvents can affect the progress of chemical reactions, which will adversely affect chemical production in many industries, resulting in a doubling of costs. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) with abundant polar groups were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CDs showed superior dispersibility and fluorescence performance compared to the CDs that have been reported for the detection of water content in organic solvents. It can realize the fluorescence detection of trace water in several water-soluble organic solvents such as N,N
