Acute intestinal obstruction was the presenting feature in 124 (19 per cent) of 646 patients with colorectal carcinoma seen over a six-year period. Forty-two per cent of tumors were incurable at presentation. Obstruction was complicated by perforation in 22 patients (18 per cent). Only 15 per cent of tumors occurred in the rectum. Homozygous achondroplasia has been thought to be uniformly lethal in the neonatal period. We describe three children, born to achondroplastic parents, who were homozygous for this disorder but who survived beyond early infancy. Two died suddenly at 37 and 33 mo; the third survives at 29 wk. At least in some instances aggressive treatment may allow others with this condition to survive with a reasonable quality of life.

Among 123 cadaveric renal allograft recipients transplanted in the period 1971-79, there were 18 with no evidence of past or present cytomegalovirus infection, 34 with primary infection and 71 with reactivated infection. One-year actuarial graft survival was 68%, 32% and 54%, respectively. The reasons for the better graft prognosis in the group without CMV infection were less rejection and fewer infections.

The effects of promethazine hydrochloride have been investigated in a rabbit kidney allograft model. The drug was ineffective on its own, but if added to a protocol that induced partial suppression of rejection in 50% of recipients, its effect was dramatic. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells exhibit aberrant metabolism defined by a shift away from oxidative phosphorylation and towards anaerobic glycolysis, favouring cell growth. We describe the case of a male patient who remarkably survived two severe cardiovascular events: ascending aortic dissection and descending aortic dissection two years later. Later, the third occurrence of aortic dissection, this time involving the abdominal aorta, became an absolute nightmare for the patient, progressively being complicated by periaortic hematoma and severe anemia - events that ultimately led to his death.
