The objective of this study was to compare corrosion behavior in several titanium alloys with immersion in acidulated saline solutions containing hydrogen peroxide. Seven types of titanium alloy were immersed in saline solutions with varying levels of pH and hydrogen peroxide content, and resulting differences in color and release of metallic elements determined in each alloy. The salen-Ti complex catalyzed cyanation of nitroolefins was accomplished via the silyl nitronate intermediate for the synthesis of chiral β-nitronitriles with e.r. up to 92 : 8 and high yields (up to 90%). The catalyst also kept a high turnover frequency at room temperature. The yield and enantioselectivity of the protocol were slightly affected even in a 10 mmol scale.

A novel approach to electrochemical processing of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating was explored. Vinyl acetate was added in the electrolytes of calcium and phosphorous in order to improve the adhesion between HA coating and titanium substrate. A total of 5 patients with recurrent posterior urethral strictures underwent endoscopic placement of an expandable endourethral stent made of titanium. Patient age ranged from 17 to 66 years (mean age 42.6 years). Followup ranged from 13 to 20 months (mean 14.1 months). Of the patients 4 presently have unobstructed voiding with no incontinence. To date no side effects have been directly related to the stents and no incrustations or calculi have formed. Our preliminary study supports the use of titanium urethral stents as an alternative form of treatment for selected urethral strictures.
