Comparative Evaluation of Fracture Resistance in Different Post and Core Systems with Varying Ferrule Locations: An In Vitro Study.

AIM: Endodontically treated teeth often require 360° ferrule to retain post and core restoration. The literature support on scientific evidence of partial ferrule is limited, hence this study was conducted to evaluate the fracture resistance of two post and core systems, i.e., Edelweiss and glass fiber post and core system with varying ferrule locations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: About 54 extracted mandibular 1st premolars were divided into Edelweiss post and core (Group A) and glass fiber post and core (Group B). They were further subdivided into 3 groups each (Partial functional, partial non-f

The diagnosis of referred orofacial dental pain.

Every patient's description of the location of pain must be treated with caution. In order to arrive at a diagnosis of pain a logical method should be employed. This consists of the history and clinical examination including pulp tests and radiographs. Where the patient complains of pain on hot or cold, an attempt should be made to reproduce the patient's pain to check on the accuracy of its description and to aid in localisation. Patients frequently refer pain to previously endodontically-treated teeth. These may not be the cause of the problem. In order to facilitate the process of diagnosis

Impact of access cavities on root canal preparation, restorative protocol quality, and fracture resistance of teeth.

The survival of endodontically treated teeth depends on the remaining tooth structure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of different access cavities on root canal preparation, restorative protocol, and fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Fifty-six mandibular molars were divided into control (n=8) and experimental (n=16) groups according to access cavity: Traditional, Conservative, and Truss; and redistributed (n=8) according to instrumentation protocols: Reciproc Blue and R-motion. After, teeth were scanned in micro-CT and then filled and redistributed accordin

Effect of Proximal Caries-driven Access on the Biomechanical Behavior of Endodontically Treated Maxillary Premolars.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the effects from the carious cavity and access from it on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary premolars using finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: A maxillary premolar was used to compare 3 types of access cavity related to having a proximal carious defect: caries-driven access (CDA), conservative access that has a mesial component (MCA), as well as traditional access with the same mesial component (MTA). Cyclic loading was simulated on the occlusal surface, and number of cycles until failure (NCF) was compared with the intact t

Is zirconium or stainless steel the most suitable crown material for less dentin stress in endodontically treated teeth?

BACKGROUND: Stainless steel crowns (SSCs), which have been used frequently in the treatment of first permanent molars in children until now, has become less applicable due to its poor aesthetic appearance. Zirconia crowns (ZCs) have become more popular due to their aesthetic advantage. However, stress transmission of ZCs to dental tissues under occlusal forces in endodontically treated teeth has not been described. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the stress distribution of different crown materials (ZCS, SSCs) and adhesive materials on dentin in endodontically treated permanen

A new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a new method to test the fracture strength of endodontically-treated root dentin. METHOD: Bovine tooth roots were transversely cut into 2-mm thick sections and the root canals were enlarged with a taper of 0.06. An outer layer of resin composite was bonded to each section to make the root canal-to-outer radius ratio smaller than 1/3. The resulting discs were treated with irrigants at the inner surface and then fractured by inserting through the center a steel rod of the same taper attached to a universal test system. Fracture strength was calculated by using Lame's equat

Scaffolds to control inflammation and facilitate dental pulp regeneration.

In dentistry, the maintenance of a vital dental pulp is of paramount importance because teeth devitalized by root canal treatment may become more brittle and prone to structural failure over time. Advanced carious lesions can irreversibly damage the dental pulp by propagating a sustained inflammatory response throughout the tissue. Although the inflammatory response initially drives tissue repair, sustained inflammation has an enormously destructive effect on the vital pulp, eventually leading to total necrosis of the tissue and necessitating its removal. The implications of tooth devitalizati

Maxillary sinus unilateral aplasia as an incidental finding following cone-beam computed (volumetric) tomography.

This paper presents a case of maxillary sinus unilateral aplasia, an uncommon condition in adults, diagnosed as an incidental finding during cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination for an endodontic case analysis. The patient was referred to a specialist endodontic practice for management of an upper right central incisor tooth. A CBCT scan was performed. The images of the left maxillary sinus showed a total lack of pneumatisation, prompting the diagnosis of aplasia. The patient's otolaryngologist was made aware of the findings. Clinical evaluation of volumetric images should be perfo
