Prenatal ultrasound findings of the IVC takeoff appearance: Teaching cases highlighting IVC interruption and double vessel sign.

Familiarity with the relationship between the aorta and inferior vena cava (IVC) in the fetal upper abdomen and thorax are important for evaluating fetal systemic venous anatomy during prenatal ultrasound. In a routine 18-week fetal scan, the IVC Takeoff Appearance was visualized, supporting normal anatomical alignment of the IVC and aorta. In contrast, a 28-week late anomaly scan demonstrated absence of the IVC Takeoff Appearance in a fetus with dextrocardia, raising suspicion for interrupted IVC with azygos continuation and associated double vessel sign. The IVC Takeoff Appearance can be vis

Management of monocular congenital cataracts.

From 1971 through 1985, a diagnosis of monocular congenital cataract was made in 14 consecutive patients. All patients had a visually significant cataract that was documented at birth or within 2 months of age. All patients were followed up long enough to report distance linear recognition acuity. Excellent visual acuity (V/A) correlated with earlier surgery, earlier contact lens fit, and excellent amblyopia therapy compliance. The oldest age for attainment of excellent or good V/A was 17 weeks. Patching therapy was based on the binocular fixation pattern. The patching program consisted of 50%

Polarization-modulated programmable photovoltaic performance of a designed ferroelectric heterojunction.

Conventional photovoltaic devices based on PN or Schottky junctions are inherently constrained by the material band gap, resulting in limited photoelectric conversion efficiency. The van der Waals ferroelectric material CuInP2S6 offers strong potential for efficient photocurrent generation via bulk photovoltaic effect, while heterostructure engineering provides additional degrees of freedom for performance modulation. Yet, the specificity in asymmetric CuInP2S6 heterojunctions remains poorly understood. Here, we design and fabricate an asymmetric photovoltaic device, consisting of Pt/CuInP2S6/

Migraine aura and related phenomena: beyond scotomata and scintillations.

Migraine affects the cortical physiology and may induce dysfunction both ictally and interictally. Although visual symptoms predominate during aura, other contiguous cortical areas related to less impressive symptoms are also impaired in migraine. Answers from 72.2% migraine with aura and 48.6% of migraine without aura patients on human faces and objects recognition, colour perception, proper names recalling and memory in general showed dysfunctions suggestive of prosopagnosia, dyschromatopsia, ideational apraxia, alien hand syndrome, proper name anomia or aphasia, varying in duration and seve

Post-shift diagnostic insight in radiography: Incubation and the temporal extension of clinical reasoning.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic radiography requires sustained visual attention, rapid technical execution, and continuous evaluative judgement under conditions of high cognitive load. In practice, radiographers must integrate patient presentation, positioning, radiation safety, workflow demands, and image quality assessment in real time. Many radiographers also report that insights about positioning adequacy, subtle abnormalities, or possible oversight arise only after the clinical shift has ended. Although this experience is widely described informally, it has not been formally examined within the di

Intraoperative Tibial Periprosthetic Fractures During Total Knee Arthroplasty: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Early Outcomes.

Intraoperative tibial periprosthetic fractures during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are uncommon, but clinically relevant complications with distinct mechanisms compared with postoperative fractures. This review summarizes the incidence, intraoperative risk factors and mechanisms, recognition, and early outcomes to provide a practical, procedure-based framework. In primary TKA, intraoperative tibial fractures occur in approximately 0.1 to 0.5% of cases, with higher rates reported in keeled tibial components and revision procedures, where incidence may approach 1.5%. These fractures occur at pr

Higher contrast thresholds for vanishing optotype recognition in macular visual fields among glaucoma patients: a structure-function analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aimed to explore the impact of glaucomatous macular damage, specifically retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss, on macular pattern vision measured by the vanishing optotype (VO) recognition contrast threshold. METHODS: Seventy-two patients (mean age, 33.51±7.05 years) with primary open-angle glaucoma and 36 healthy controls (mean age, 30.25±6.70 years) were enrolled. VO recognition contrast thresholds of each participant were measured at the 16 preset test locations covering the central 5° visual field (VF). Macular sensitivity (MS) was tested by macular threshold test of Humph

Privileged Functional Connectivity between the Visual Word Form Area and the Language System.

The visual word form area (VWFA) is a region in the left occipitotemporal sulcus of literate individuals that is purportedly specialized for visual word recognition. However, there is considerable controversy about its functional specificity and connectivity, with some arguing that it serves as a domain-general, rather than word-specific, visual processor. The VWFA is a critical region for testing hypotheses about the nature of cortical organization, because it is known to develop only through experience (i.e., reading acquisition), and widespread literacy is too recent to have influenced gene

Higher Diagnostic Accuracy of an AI Model for Colposcopy Compared With Conventional and Digital Colposcopic Evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Colposcopy involves subjective visual assessment of cervical features that may indicate cervical dysplasia. Pattern recognition during colposcopy could be enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). Using colposcopy images with precisely mapped multiple biopsy sites and corresponding histologic diagnoses, we developed an AI model, Cervix-AID-Net, to classify colposcopy images into low-grade disease [less than cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 2] and high-grade disease (CIN grade 2 or above). The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of the Cerv

A dual-route perspective on poor reading in a regular orthography: an fMRI study.

This study examined functional brain abnormalities in dyslexic German readers who - due to the regularity of German in the reading direction - do not exhibit the reading accuracy problem of English dyslexic readers, but suffer primarily from a reading speed problem. The in-scanner task required phonological lexical decisions (i.e., Does xxx sound like an existing word?) and presented familiar and unfamiliar letter strings of existing phonological words (e.g., Taxi-Taksi) together with nonwords (e.g., Tazi). Dyslexic readers exhibited the same response latency pattern (words<pseudohomophones<no

Comparison of metabolic profiles from serum from hepatotoxin-treated rats by nuclear-magnetic-resonance-spectroscopy-based metabonomic analysis.

Hepatotoxicities were induced in rats using alpha-naphthylisothiocyanate (ANIT), carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), and hydrazine (HYD). Male Wistar rats were treated with three typical hepatotoxins, and serum samples were collected after 48 h. Biochemical effects of these toxins on plasma composition were evaluated by high-resolution (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of serum. The biochemical effects of CCl(4) were characterized by an elevated level of 3-d-hydroxybutyrate (HB), acetoacetate (Aca), and creatinine (Cn) in serum, and ANIT led to increases in the amounts of low-densi

Multi-voxel pattern analysis of face and word encoding fMRI in people with temporal lobe epilepsy and healthy individuals.

Memory functional MRI (fMRI) has been used to explore cognitive processing in people with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) to predict memory decline after anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR). Traditional studies employed univariate analysis (UVA), focusing on isolated voxel activity in mesial temporal regions. By contrast, multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), examines distributed activity patterns , offering deeper insight into neural networks supporting cognitive functions. MVPA allows precise mapping of individual memory encoding strategies that may influence surgical planning. I

Neuroplastic effects of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor in relearning and retrieval.

Animal studies using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and learning paradigms have demonstrated that serotonin is important for flexibility in executive functions and learning. SSRIs might facilitate relearning through neuroplastic processes and thus exert their clinical effects in psychiatric diseases where cognitive functioning is affected. However, translation of these mechanisms to humans is missing. In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, we assessed functional brain activation during learning and memory retrieval in healthy volunteers performing associative learning ta

Effects of intranasal oxytocin administration on memory for infant cues: moderation by childhood emotional maltreatment.

Oxytocin has been implicated in parent-infant attachment and social recognition. With respect to emotion recognition memory, both memory-enhancing and impairing effects have been observed, suggesting an influence of individual factors. We assessed the effects of oxytocin on memory for infant cues, and whether these effects are moderated by self-reported childhood emotional maltreatment. Nulliparous females (N = 102) participated in a randomized, double-blind, between-subjects study with intranasal oxytocin or placebo administration. Participants' memory was tested using the Baby Social Reward

Task- and experience-dependent cortical selectivity to features informative for categorization.

In this study, we bridge the gap between monkey electrophysiological recordings that showed selective responses to informative features and human fMRI data that demonstrated increased and selective responses to trained objects. Human participants trained with computer-generated fish stimuli. For each participant, two features of the fish were informative for category membership and two features were uninformative. After training, participants showed higher perceptual sensitivity to the informative dimensions. An fMRI adaptation paradigm revealed that during categorization the right inferior fr

Decoding ability makes waves in reading: deficient interactions between attention and phonological analysis in developmental dyslexia.

Whilst there is general consensus that phonological processing is deficient in developmental dyslexia, recent research also implicates visuo-attentional contributions. Capitalising on the P3a wave of event-related potentials as an index of attentional capture, we tested dyslexic and normal readers on a novel variant of a visual oddball task to examine the interplay of orthographic-phonological integration and attentional engagement. Targets were animal words (10% occurrence). Amongst nontarget stimuli were two critical conditions: pseudohomophones of targets (10%) and control pseudohomophones

Low-level deficits in beat perception: neither necessary nor sufficient for explaining developmental dyslexia in a consistent orthography.

This article reports two different studies examining the theoretical account of low-level deficits in beat perception as an alternative explanation of developmental dyslexia in Greek, an orthographically consistent language. Study I examined the relationship of amplitude rise time and frequency discrimination with measures of phonological processing, working memory, and reading fluency in a large unselected sample of Grade 4 children. Study II examined the presence of beat perception deficits in groups of Grade 2, 4, and 6 children with dyslexia and their chronological age controls. The result

Altered age-related trajectories of amygdala-prefrontal circuitry in adolescents at clinical high risk for psychosis: a preliminary study.

Emotion processing deficits are prominent in schizophrenia and exist prior to the onset of overt psychosis. However, developmental trajectories of neural circuitry subserving emotion regulation and the role that they may play in illness onset have not yet been examined in patients at risk for psychosis. The present study employed a cross-sectional analysis to examine age-related functional activation in amygdala and prefrontal cortex, as well as functional connectivity between these regions, in adolescents at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis relative to typically developing adolescents.
