Seroprevalence of hantavirus and Yersinia pestis antibodies in professionals from the Plague control program.

INTRODUCTION: Professionals who handle rodents in the field and in the laboratory are at risk of infection by the microorganis mharbored by these animals. METHODS: Serum samples from professionals involved in rodent and Yersinia pestis handling in field or laboratory work were analyzed to determine hantavirus and plague seroprevalence and to establish a relationship between these activities and reports of illnesses. RESULTS: Two individuals had antibodies against hantavirus, and two harbored antibodie against the plague; none of the individuals had experienced an illness related to their dut

Epidemiology of Bartonella infection in rodents and shrews in Taiwan.

During the period of August 2002 and November 2004, an epidemiological investigation for Bartonella infection was conducted in small mammals in Taiwan. Using whole blood culture on chocolate agar plates, Bartonella species were successfully isolated from 41.3% of the 310 animals tested. The isolation rate of Bartonella species varied among different animal species, including 52.7% of the 169 Rattus norvegicus, 28.6% of the 126 Sucus murinus, 10% of the 10 Rattus rattus and 66.7% of the three Rattus losea. Bacteremia prevalence also varied with the origin of the animals, as 56.2% of the animals

An epidemiological and ecological study of human alveolar echinococcosis transmission in south Gansu, China.

Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is usually a rare, highly pathogenic zoonotic disease, transmitted across the northern hemisphere between fox and rodent hosts. In China the first cases were described in 1965; however very few epidemiological studies have been undertaken since. Following identification in 1991 of a serious focus of human AE in south Gansu province, detailed village-based community and ecological studies were carried out between 1994 and 1997. Hepatic ultrasound mass screening with serological testing (five tests) identified 84/2482 new AE cases (3%). An overall prevalence of

Evolution of the rodent eosinophil-associated RNase gene family by rapid gene sorting and positive selection.

The mammalian RNase A superfamily comprises a diverse array of ribonucleolytic proteins that have a variety of biochemical activities and physiological functions. Two rapidly evolving RNases of higher primates are of particular interest as they are major secretory proteins of eosinophilic leukocytes and have been found to possess anti-pathogen activities in vitro. To understand how these RNases acquired this function during evolution and to develop animal models for the study of their functions in vivo, it is necessary to investigate these genes in many species. Here, we report the sequences o

Subtyping of uncultured bartonellae using sequence comparison of 16 S/23 S rRNA intergenic spacer regions amplified directly from infected blood.

This study aimed to assess the usefulness of a PCR-based approach to the detection and differentiation of Bartonella strains in infected blood. The conservation of potential genus-specific PCR primer hybridisation sites within the 16 S/23 S rRNA gene intragenic spacer regions of Bartonella species was confirmed following sequence analysis of the intragenic spacer regions of four previously untested species. The extent of intra-species variation within the specific amplicons was assessed by comparison of sequences obtained from 17 strains of four Bartonella species. Eight sequence variants were

Neuroimmunologic implications in coronary artery disease.

In this review, the role of the macrophage in the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease (CAD) is examined. The central interaction of macrophage, endothelial cell and smooth muscle cell in the context of hyperlipidemia is considered. The macrophage appears to be at the beginning of a chain of events that starts with elevated low density lipoprotein (LDL). Stress, particularly in those with a core hostility, may be associated not only with higher catecholamine levels but also with higher serum lipid levels. These lipids will in turn be processed to oxidized LDL by macrophage and endothelia

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the detection of antibody to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in the sera of livestock and wild vertebrates.

IgM antibody response to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was monitored in experimentally infected sheep and cattle by an IgM capture enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Specific binding of antigen was detected by a rabbit anti-CCHF horseradish peroxidase conjugate or a sandwich technique with hyperimmune mouse anti-CCHF ascitic fluid and commercially available anti-mouse immunoglobulin peroxidase conjugate. The persistence of IgM antibody activity was found to be of shorter duration than in humans, and this may be a function of the relative lack of susceptibility of these animals

The first outbreak of human plague in Lushoto district, north-east Tanzania.

A one-week investigation was performed at Mkunki and Mavumo (ward of Shume, Lushoto district, Tanzania) at the time of outbreak (June, 1980). Rodents, people, domestic dogs and fleas were examined, 36 rats, mostly Rattus rattus, were caught and used in serological and bacteriological analysis for plague. 48 fleas, mostly Xenopsylla brasiliensis, were collected from the captured rodents. 413 people and 11 dogs were examined. All rodent, carnivorous and human sera were tested for plague antibodies, using the Passive Haemagglutination (PHA) test. Similarly protein extracts from rodent organs were

Integrated Analysis of Human Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome Cases and Rodent Hantavirus Surveillance in Zhejiang Province, China, 2025.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), caused by Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) and Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV), remains a neglected rodent-borne zoonosis with persistent residual spillover risk in low-incidence regions of China. This study assessed human HFRS occurrence and small-mammal hantavirus surveillance signals in small-mammal hosts across Zhejiang Province, China, in 2025. Reported human cases were obtained from the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System, and animal host surveillance was conducted at five designated monitoring sites. A total of 107 HFRS cases were rep

A RE-EVALUATION OF ZYGOCOTYLE (DIGENEA, PARAMPHISTOMOIDEA) BASED ON NEW GENETIC DATA SUPPORTS ITS SYNONYMIZATION WITH WARDIUS.

The Zygocotylidae Ward, 1917 is a compact family of amphistome digeneans that until now comprised 2 genera, each represented by a single species: Zygocotyle lunata (Diesing, 1836) Stunkard, 1916 and Wardius zibethicus Barker and East, 1915 in Barker 1915. Despite highly similar morphology, these genera are separated based on the presence (Zygocotyle) or absence (Wardius) of posterolateral projections (=lappets) on the ventral sucker and esophageal bulb. In the present study, we generated partial large ribosomal subunit (28S), internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) rDNA, and cytochrome c oxidase

Babesia Infections in Reservoir Hosts and the Possibility of Human Babesiosis in Ghana.

Background: In Ghana, no research has recorded any positive cases of human babesiosis, despite the presence of Babesia reservoir hosts in many Ghanaian communities. Epidemiological studies have reported active infections in these hosts. Thus, this study explored possible cases of human babesiosis in selected major hospitals in the Greater Accra region and assessed the prevalence of Babesia infections in common reservoirs (dogs, cats, and rodents) from households and veterinary institutions. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved retrieving medical records from three major hospitals in ur

Identifying the Drivers Related to Animal Reservoirs, Environment, and Socio-Demography of Human Leptospirosis in Different Community Types of Southern Chile: An Application of Machine Learning Algorithm in One Health Perspective.

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with global public health impact, particularly in poor socio-economic settings in tropical regions. Transmitted through urine-contaminated water or soil from rodents, dogs, and livestock, leptospirosis causes over a million clinical cases annually. Risk factors include outdoor activities, livestock production, and substandard housing that foster high densities of animal reservoirs. This One Health study in southern Chile examined Leptospira serological evidence of exposure in people from urban slums, semi-rural settings, and farm settings, using the Extreme Gradient

Every member of the kingdom Animalia is a potential vector of human pathogens.

Zoonotic diseases are a subset of infectious diseases, which account for enormous morbidity and mortality. Pathologies like malaria, rabies, Lyme disease, leptospirosis, avian flu etc. are microbe- and parasite-caused ailments, where the etiological agents are introduced into or on the human body via ticks, mosquitoes, birds, rodents, bats, and deer, among other members of kingdom Animalia. While some of the zoonotic diseases are well-investigated and caution taken against, a lot many are yet to be recognized. This ignorance costs health, and lives, especially in developing countries.
