Referral patterns and findings of patients undergoing CT coronary angiography.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) is widely used to rule out significant coronary artery disease in patients who present with chest pain, with many international guidelines recommending its use. However, there is a tendency for it to be used indiscriminately. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the requesting patterns of CTCA at our institution and the outcomes of these patients. We also aimed to study the prevalence of coronary anomalies observed in these patients. METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective study of patients who had undergone a CTCA at Sultan Qaboo

The reins of the midbrain: Task-based habenula function in healthy humans.

The habenula is a small epithalamic structure that animal models have characterized as a key node linking value-laden information to midbrain monoaminergic systems. Its involvement in mood disorders has driven growing interest in characterizing its function in humans, yet the healthy baseline of habenular function measured using task-based fMRI has not been systematically synthesised. Thus, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO and identified 34 task-based fMRI studies (37 cohorts, N = 1480) examining habenular function in healthy adults. To address the methodological challenges of habenula

[Metabolic Activations and Pharmacokinetics of Drugs Using Data-driven Modeling].

Pharmacological and toxicological assessments of a wide array of chemicals typically involve estimating human clearance through allometric extrapolation of in vivo animal data, using empirical compartmental and physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. Parameters for pharmacokinetic absorption, distribution, and metabolic clearance can be calculated and applied to models that replicate observed plasma drug concentration-time profiles. In patients with genetically impaired cytochrome P450 (P450) enzymes who are prescribed only certain drugs, moderate plasma exposure should be noted a

Lightweight Transformer-based knowledge distillation framework for high-dimensional spatiotemporal radiomics in breast cancer risk prediction.

Breast cancer exhibits significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Traditional radiomics approaches usually rely on low-temporal-resolution imaging and discrete image phases, failing to capture the rapid and continuous kinetic evolution within the tumor microenvironment. Although ultrafast dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging captures precise contrast agent permeation, current methodologies lack systematic, dedicated computational frameworks to extract these high-dimensional dynamic features. To bridge this gap, this study developed and validated a robust two-stage spatiotemporal

Multimodal imaging and molecular analysis of a 350-year-old purple heron mummy.

The discovery of glacially preserved remains offers a rare and invaluable opportunity to explore long-term tissue preservation, diagenetic alterations, and microbial colonisation. In this study, we examined a 350-year-old glacier mummy of a purple heron (Ardea purpurea) recovered from the Austrian Alps, specifically from the Gurgler Ferner glacier in Tyrol, Austria, at an altitude of 3.004 m in the area of the Hochwildehaus towards Hochwilde and the Annakegele, marking the first documented instance of an avian glacier mummy in this region. A comprehensive multimodal analytical approach was emp

Reference gene selection for accurate RT-qPCR normalization in four tissues and whole-body samples of Acheta domesticus.

House crickets (Acheta domesticus) are increasingly recognized as a sustainable protein source for food and feed systems. However, despite their growing relevance, molecular research on this species remains extremely limited, particularly concerning robust normalization strategies for gene expression analysis. This study is the first to identify and validate suitable reference genes for RT-qPCR analysis in A. domesticus across different tissues, an essential step for accurate quantification of host and pathogen target gene expression. Six candidate reference genes commonly used in insects (Ado

Bayesian hierarchical models for multivariate mixed responses with repeated measures: A case study in arterial occlusive disease.

Modeling repeated measures of arterial occlusive diseases, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), using data with mixed-type outcomes poses unique challenges due to complex dependency structures and diverse distributional assumptions. This study proposes a comprehensive Bayesian hierarchical modeling framework for the simultaneous analysis of binary and continuous outcomes observed repeatedly within individuals. We focus on the methodological comparison of three major Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Bayesian computational methods-Metropolis-Hastings, Gibbs sampling, and Hamiltonian Monte Car

Pericoronary Adipose Tissue Imaging on Coronary CT Angiography: From Fat Attenuation Index to Radiomic Risk Phenotyping.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) has evolved from an anatomical test into a platform for cardiovascular risk phenotyping. Pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT), which is directly contiguous with the coronary adventitia, changes its composition in response to vascular inflammation and can be interrogated on routine CCTA. Importantly, PCAT attenuation, the fat attenuation index (FAI), and the standardized FAI score are related but nonequivalent measurements: Raw PCAT attenuation is a mean Hounsfield unit measurement within a defined PCAT region, whereas FAI denotes an attenuation-bas

Mining Microbial Genomes for Anti-Pseudomonal Peptides: A Translational In Silico Framework.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa constitutes a substantial health risk, instigating diseases such as pneumonia and sepsis in vulnerable hospitalized patients. The World Health Organization categorizes it as a high-priority bacterial pathogen owing to its marked resistance to multiple antibiotics. This pathogen poses substantial management challenges, thereby necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. Computational methodologies facilitate the rapid identification of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with heightened specificity and effectiveness against P. aeruginosa by employing ge

Explainable Deep Learning for MRI-Negative Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: Classification and Brain Region Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Deep learning has achieved remarkable success in medical image analysis; however, limited model interpretability remains a major barrier to its clinical translation. MRI-negative temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is characterized by the absence of readily identifiable structural abnormalities on conventional MRI. Methods: We propose a hierarchical, multiscale 3D residual network (H-MSResNet) combined with layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP). The study included structural T1-weighted MRIs from 101 patients with MRI-negative TLE and 101 healthy controls. Model classification

Survival of myasthenic crisis patients admitted in a tertiary referral hospital in a low to medium income country.

Although some factors that increase the risk of myasthenic crisis (MC) and lower survival rates have been identified in the US and Europe, none have been studied extensively in Asian countries. This study determines the profile of MC patients admitted in a tertiary referral hospital in the Philippines and the factors possibly associated with the worst outcome, namely: survival, prolonged intubation, and tracheostomy. Data were collected from the records of MC patients admitted in the hospital, from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2024. For survival analysis, hospital days served as time variab
