Subtalar arthrodesis for complications of intra-articular calcaneal fractures.

Eighty six subtalar arthrodeses performed between 1985 and 1996 for complications associated with intra-articular calcaneal fractures were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into three Groups: (I) 59 patients with calcaneal malunions (II) 13 patients with failed open reduction and internal fixation, and (III) eight patients undergoing open reductions and primary fusion for highly comminuted fractures. In each scenario, internal fixation was achieved with cancellous lag screws. Bone graft material consisted of either autogenous iliac crest graft, local graft obtained from the late

Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Proximal Tibia Fracture Treated With Dual Tibial Plating: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal tibial fractures, particularly bicondylar variants (AO/OTA 41-C), are complex injuries usually resulting from high-energy trauma. These fractures are characterized by articular comminution and metaphyseal instability. Dual tibial plating provides superior biomechanical stability by stabilizing both columns, which reduces the risk of varus collapse and facilitates early mobilization compared to isolated lateral plating. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 50 skeletally mature patients (≥18 years) with closed or Gustilo-Anderson type I o

Complex Bilateral Posterior Hip Dislocation with a Long-term Follow-up-A Case Report.

Bilateral hip dislocations are among the rarest traumatic incidents. We report a case of a 45-year-old, opium-addicted man with bilateral posterior hip dislocation and bilateral femoral head fractures proximal to the fovea with more comminution on the left side. After an unsuccessful closed reduction attempt, surgical reduction and internal fixation of the left and right femoral heads were performed on admission and 72 hours later. He was readmitted because of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on the left side after six weeks and left femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN) after 14 months. All c

Delayed Onset of Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm With Brachial Plexus Compression Following Gunshot Wound Injury.

Early diagnosis of brachial plexus injuries is crucial to prevent long-term morbidity and improve outcomes. We present a unique case of delayed onset of brachial plexus compression two months following a traumatic gunshot injury causing multiple injuries including a T1 vertebral body comminuted fracture and pneumothorax. The patient experienced significant pain and progressive neurological examination changes during follow-up visits, and thus duplex ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) angiography were performed, which demonstrated a left subclavian artery pseudoaneurysm. This was managed o

[Amputation and equipment of the lower limb during the Revolution and the Empire].

During the French Revolution and Napoleon's campaigns, above-knee or below-knee amputations were performed either immediately or with a delay, which favoured septic problems. A rapidly operated amputation by a well-trained surgeon was the best way to save the life of a soldier who suffered from an open comminuted fracture of a limb. The conditions on military campaigns were indeed hard ones: doctors and surgeons had practically no resources and the transportation of severely injured persons was difficult. Such conditions favoured the pain and the danger caused by an injury, and it was rather i

Title of the study: finite element analysis of five internal fixation modalities for Schatzker type IV‒C tibial plateau fractures.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the biomechanical performance of five different internal fixation strategies for Schatzker type IV-C tibial plateau fractures using three-dimensional finite element analysis. By analyzing stress distribution and displacement patterns under physiological load, we seek to identify optimal fixation modalities for clinical application. METHODS: We established a three-dimensional finite element model of Schatzker IV-C tibial plateau fractures and evaluated five internal fixation modalities via finite element analysis. These modalities included a medial plate

The DRoPH score: development of a tool for predicting reduction difficulty in proximal humerus fracture osteosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: Proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) are among the most common and challenging fractures due to complex anatomy and variable fracture patterns. While anatomical reduction is critical for successful outcomes, no tool currently predicts the intraoperative difficulty of achieving it. Despite advances in surgical techniques, complications persist. Existing classification systems, such as Codman's, Neer's, AO/OTA, and Mayo-FJD, focus on fracture morphology and displacement but do not address intraoperative complexity. This study aims to develop a new score for the early prediction of intra

Nonreamed nailing of tibial diaphyseal fractures in blunt polytrauma patients.

The efficacy of nonreamed nailing as the treatment of choice of unstable blunt tibial diaphyseal fractures was studied. From March 1, 1990, through August 31, 1991, 72 patients with 74 fractures that required fixation were treated. One patient died and six were lost to follow-up, leaving 65 patients with 67 fractures. Follow-up averaged 21 months (range 5-43). Fisher's exact and logistic regression analyses were used to compare grades of open fractures, comminution as classified by Winquist, and dynamic and static nailings. The failure rates of 51 titanium and 16 stainless steel nails were com

Technical considerations of computer-aided planning in severe orbital trauma: A retrospective study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of linear and orbital volume measurements in severe orbital trauma. Patients with severe orbital trauma that involved more than two walls and entailed a marked degree of comminution were included in this retrospective analysis. However, patients with incomplete clinical records and a simple blowout or zygmatico-orbital fractures were excluded. All the cases underwent surgical correction guided by virtual surgical planning and 3D-printed templates. The measurement protocol depended on assessing orbital dimensions, orbital volumetry, an

Factors Associated with Failed Closed Reduction in Flexion and Gartland Type III Pediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Most displaced supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHFs) are treated with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning. While there are only a few possible indications for converting to an open reduction, a failed closed reduction is a common cause. This study aims to elucidate possible risk factors for failed closed reductions of SCHF. METHODS: A retrospective review of SCHF from 2010 to 2020 at a pediatric tertiary medical center, which underwent operative fixation, was conducted. Exclusion criteria were open fractures and reasons for open reduction other than failed closed reduction
