Understanding responsiveness to an exercise intervention for people with persistent low back pain and lateral abdominal muscle impairments. A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Exercise consistently demonstrates a small effect size for patients with persistent low back pain (PLBP). Determining patient characteristics that influence intervention responsiveness may improve treatment allocation and effect sizes. An exercise intervention for patients with PLBP and maladaptive changes in lateral abdominal muscle (LAM) contraction was recently trialed. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors predicting responsiveness to an exercise intervention for patients with PLBP and why. METHODS: This was a secondary mixed methods analysis of results from a feasibility randomized

Effectiveness of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition in limiting abdominal aortic aneurysm progression in mice correlates with a differentiated smooth muscle cell phenotype.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are a chronic condition that often progress over years to produce a weakened aorta with increased susceptibility for rupture, and currently, there are no pharmacological treatments available to slow disease progression. AAA development has been characterized by increased expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inactivation of COX-2 before disease initiation reduces AAA incidence in a mouse model of the disease. The current study determined the effectiveness of COX-2 inhibition on AAA progression when treatment was begun after initiation of the disease. COX

Capsiate administration results in an uncoupling protein-3 downregulation, an enhanced muscle oxidative capacity and a decreased abdominal fat content in vivo.

OBJECTIVES: The involvement of skeletal muscle mitochondrial uncoupling protein-3 (UCP3) in the control of energy expenditure in skeletal muscle and at the whole-body level is still a matter of debate. We previously reported that UCP3 downregulation is linked to an enhanced mitochondrial energy metabolism in rat skeletal muscle as a result of acute capsiate treatment. Here, we aimed at investigating noninvasively the effects of chronic capsiate ingestion on metabolic changes occurring in exercising gastrocnemius muscle and at the whole-body level. METHODS: We used an original experimental set

Role of anaerobic bacteria in intra-abdominal septic abscesses in mediating septic control of skeletal muscle glucose oxidation and lactic acidemia.

Altered glucose metabolism and lactic acidemia are features of Gram-negative polymicrobial abscesses, but the relationship between carbohydrate metabolism and the aerobic or anaerobic organisms is unclear. Since reductions in the % active pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHa) limits glucose oxidation in sepsis, the effect of a 7-day monoclonal (E. coli or B. fragilis) vs. biclonal (E. coli + B. fragilis) intra-abdominal abscess (IA) on PDHa and lactate concentrations in skeletal muscle (SM) and plasma was studied in rats. A chronic IA was created by the intraperitoneal introduction of a steril

Ultrasound-guided Botulinum Toxin injection into the rectus abdominis muscle for intractable abdominal spasms in spinal cord injury: A case report.

CONTEXT: Abdominal spasms following spinal cord injury (SCI) can be a source of severe pain and functional impairment, often proving resistant to systemic antispastic medications. While botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) is widely used for limb spasticity, its application for abdominal wall spasms in SCI is documented infrequently. FINDINGS: We present the case of a 43-year-old male with C4 AIS-C tetraplegia suffering from severe, painful spasms of the rectus abdominis (RA) muscle, which were refractory to high-dose oral baclofen. Due to the localized nature of the symptoms and the risks associated w

Fosb promotes ferroptosis in vascular smooth muscle cells via the NF-κB pathway to exacerbate abdominal aortic aneurysm progression.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a fatal disease characterized by vascular wall inflammation and matrix remodeling. The inflammatory phenotypic transformation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) holds a pivotal role in AAA pathogenesis. As an inflammatory regulator, whether FBJ osteosarcoma oncogene B (Fosb) participates in AAA progression by driving SMC phenotypic switching remains unclear. METHODS: Using the scRNA-seq data from AAA patients, we identified Fosb as a key driver of SMC phenotypic switching through cell clustering annotation, differential gene screening, functional enri
