Changes in Ocular Growth after Pediatric Cataract Surgery.

The human eye undergoes extensive changes during early childhood, including axial elongation, corneal flattening and reduced lens power. Animal studies have shown that removing the crystalline lens during infancy retards axial elongation. Axial elongation has been studied in children after cataract extraction both directly and indirectly. Children with a unilateral congenital cataract generally have a shorter axial length in their cataractous eye than in their fellow eye. This difference usually persists after cataract surgery. While some studies have reported a modest reduction in axial elong

Changes in axial length in anisometropic children wearing orthokeratology lenses.

PURPOSE: There is a particular anisometropia occurring in one eye with myopia, while the other eye has very low myopia, emmetropia, or very low hyperopia. It is unclear how the binocular axial length changes when these children wear unilateral OK lenses only in the more myopic eyes. This study investigates the changes in the axial elongation of both eyes. METHODS: This is a 1-year retrospective study. In total, 148 children with myopic anisometropia were included. The more myopic eyes were wearing orthokeratology lenses (treated eyes), whereas the contralateral eyes were not indicated for vis

The effect of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) stimulation on axial length changes to imposed optical defocus in young adults.

PURPOSE: The intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) regulate pupil size and circadian rhythms. Stimulation of the ipRGCs using short-wavelength blue light causes a sustained pupil constriction known as the post-illumination pupil response (PIPR). Here we examined the effects of ipRGC stimulation on axial length changes to imposed optical defocus in young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nearly emmetropic young participants were given either myopic (+3 D, n = 16) or hyperopic (-3 D, n = 17) defocus in their right eye for 2 h. Before and after defocus, a series of axial leng

Monocular deprivation in an identical twin.

PURPOSE: The scientific literature contains minimal human studies of the effect of monocular deprivation on a single eye of twins. This report examines the effects of early visual deprivation on axial length measurements by comparing the refractive findings and axial length measurements of identical twins' 4 eyes, 1 visually deprived and 3 nondeprived. METHODS: A retrospective record review was performed on the medical records of identical 6-year-old Hispanic female twins. Both patients had received eye care at the University Optometric Center, State University of New York, for a period of at

Knobby Eye Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: A spherical globe is traditionally assumed, but this study employed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to demonstrate frequent occurrence of non-spherical staphylomata in strabismic patients. METHODS: High-resolution, surface coil MRI was obtained in multiple image planes in 21 highly myopic subjects (36 eyes) and compared with 17 normal controls (33 eyes). Images were analyzed for axial length, aspect ratio of eye shape, and deflection of muscle paths. RESULTS: All but two high myopes had strabismus. While myopic globes were generally spherical in 10 myopic eyes including both o

Significant Improvement in High Myopic Anisometropic Amblyopia Treated With Repeated Low-Level Red-Light (RLRL) Therapy: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND High myopic anisometropic amblyopia poses a significant therapeutic challenge, as traditional interventions (spectacles, occlusion, atropine) exhibit limited efficacy in reducing anisometropia and controlling myopia progression. This case report explores the novel application of repeated low-level red-light therapy, which has been previously validated for myopia control, in addressing both amblyopia and refractive imbalance. CASE REPORT A male child was diagnosed with anisometropic myopia at the age of 5 years. Cycloplegic retinoscopy showed a refractive error of -7.75/-1.25×155 dio

[Morphometry of the ciliary body using ultrasound biomicroscopy].

High-frequency ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is a new method which allows in vivo visualisation of anterior segment structures with high resolution but limited penetration. Using this modality we wanted to examine the ciliary body and measure its total length and depth and look for correlations with the axial eye length. A special technique with external markers was developed to measure the total length of the ciliary body using two UBM pictures. In 83 patients the mean ciliary body length was 5.2 mm nasally and 5.7 mm temporally. The depth of the ciliary body was 1.2 mm nasally and 1.4 mm te

High Myopia and the Complement System: Factor H in Myopic Maculopathy.

High myopia (HM) is both a medical problem and refractive error of the eye owing to excessive eyeball length, which progressively makes eye tissue atrophic, and is one of the main causes for diminishing visual acuity in developed countries. Despite its high prevalence and many genetic and proteomic studies, no molecular pattern exists that explain the degenerative process underlying HM, which predisposes patients to other diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and chorioretinal atrophy that affect the macular area. To determine the relation between complement Factors H (CFH) and
