Use of a percutaneous bone fiducial screw for elevating simple closed depressed skull fractures: illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Depressed skull fractures in infants often present as "ping-pong ball" fractures with inward buckling of the calvarium, secondary to trauma. Management varies widely, and few concrete guidelines exist in the literature to guide decision-making when choosing a methodology for fracture elevation. The authors present two cases of attempted depressed skull fracture elevation with traction on a percutaneously placed bone fiducial screw, followed by a review of the literature, in order to further investigate the factors considered when selecting an intervention. OBSERVATIONS: An 8-month

Evaluation of the Relation Between Preload Values and Pull-Out Force of the Cortical Screw Used in Bone Fracture.

This study aims to examine the relation between pull-out strength and preload values of the cortical screw used in bone fracture fixation. The research question is that "Does the pull-out strength of the cortical screw used in the bone fracture fixation change with the preload values of the screw change?". To perform this purpose, the finite element method was selected due to its ease to evaluate and calculate the stresses on the whole model. Models of a cortical screw, partial plate, and bone were created using the SolidWorks program. The material properties of the bone were selected orthotro

Is the Implant in Bone? The Accuracy of CT and Fluoroscopic Imaging for Detecting Malpositioned Pelvic Screw and SI Fusion Implants.

BACKGROUND: Spine fusions to the pelvis have been associated with increased strain to the sacroiliac joint (SI) and possibly continued postoperative low back pain. To minimize this, concomitant SI joint fusion at the time of lumbopelvic fixation has been advocated. This requires concomitant placement of sacral alar iliac screws (S2AI) for lumbopelvic fixation and triangular titanium rods (TTR) for the SI joint fusion. Traditionally, surgeons have mostly relied on fluoroscopic images to confirm final implant position and patient safety after pelvic instrumentation, although computer tomography

Effect of Downsized Screw Selection on Bone Healing and Postoperative Complications in Volar Plating of Distal Radius Fractures.

When performing volar plating of distal radius fractures, selecting downsized subchondral screws may prevent dorsal screw penetration (DSP), which is a risk factor for extensor tendon rupture. However, downsizing may cause loss of reduction or poor bone healing. This prospective study investigated the effect of downsized screw selection on bone healing and postoperative complications. A total of 115 patients with postoperative follow-up longer than 6 months comprised the study population. Using a depth gauge, screws that were 2-mm shorter than the measured value were selected. The DSP then was

Treatment of unstable scaphoid waist nonunion with cancellous bone grafts and cannulated screw or Kirschner wire fixation.

We compared two methods of fixation for unstable scaphoid waist nonunions regarding rate of scaphoid union, union time, deformity correction, clinical outcomes (pain, range of motion, and grip strength), and QuickDASH scores. Eighty-nine patients who undergo cancellous iliac bone grafting and internal fixation either with a Herbert screw (n = 46) or multiple Kirschner wires (n = 43) were evaluated. The rate of scaphoid union in the K-wire group was 98% (n = 42) versus 89% (n = 41) in the screw group. The mean union time and duration of surgery for K-wire group versus screw group were 12 versus

Comparison of cortical bone trajectory versus pedicle screw techniques in lumbar fusion surgery: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical studies have demonstrated that cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screw can provide a 30% increase in uniaxial yield pullout load than pedicle screw (PS). In addition, the insertion torque of CBT screw is 1.71 times higher than that of PS. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate clinical results between CBT screw technique and PS technique in lumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: An extensive search of literature was performed in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane library. The following outcomes were extracted: visual analog scale (VAS), Oswestry disabilities index (ODI), Japanese

Fixation of fractures of the condylar head of the mandible with a new magnesium-alloy biodegradable cannulated headless bone screw.

It is difficult to fix fractures of the condylar head of the mandible. Several techniques have been described which show satisfactory outcomes, but stability can be questionable, and some can cause irritation of the soft tissues. We describe a technique and first results of treating such fractures with resorbable magnesium-based headless bone screws (Magnezix® 2.7mm CS; Syntellix AG, Hanover, Germany).

[First results with a resorbable MgYREZr compression screw in unstable scaphoid fractures show extensive bone cysts].

Osteosynthesis with headless compression screws is an established treatment option for unstable scaphoid fractures. Common implants are made of titanium alloy or steel and usually remain in place. Due to implant density and ferromagnetic properties, artefacts are common in postoperative imaging procedures, e.g. MRI. Now resorbable implants made of magnesium alloy (MgYREZr) have become available. They have biomechanical properties equivalent to human bone and may be used as an alternative to the nonresorbable screw systems.5 patients with acute scaphoid fractures were treated with a double-thre
