Differential effects of subcutaneous electrical stimulation (SQS) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in rodent models of chronic neuropathic or inflammatory pain.

OBJECTIVES: Electrical stimulation has been used for many years for the treatment of pain. Present-day research demonstrates that stimulation targets and parameters impact the induction of specific pain-modulating mechanisms. New targets are increasingly being investigated clinically, but the scientific rationale for a particular target is often not well established. This present study compares the behavioral effects of targeting peripheral axons by electrode placement in the subcutaneous space vs. electrode placement on the surface of the skin in a rodent model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rodent

Investigating Speech Intelligibility Capabilities of Electrical Auditory Stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: In military settings, ear-worn communication systems and hearing protection have equal importance, but opposite purposes. It is crucial to provide clear communication signal free of noise that may also be hazardous to hearing. Electrical auditory stimulation is a mode of transmitting high fidelity speech information with an amplitude modulated electromagnetic signal that is sent transcutaneously through electrodes. No traditional ear-worn transducer is needed, offering various locations for receiving auditory information on the head and body. The purpose of the current study is t

Dose standardization for transcranial electrical stimulation: an accessible approach.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is a widely used non-invasive brain stimulation technique. However, due to high inter-individual variability in the induced electric fields (E-fields), a fixed stimulation current delivers an inconsistent dose. We developed a dose standardization method without the requirement of participant-specific structural imaging and E-field modeling. Robust multiple linear regression models were trained to predict peak E-field strengths across 10 electrode montages and 418 healthy adults. These regression models predicted peak E-field strengths in unseen partici

Increased Bone Mineral Content in Response to Electrical Stimulation.

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is widespread, underdiagnosed, and disproportionately affects women and marginalized populations. With limitations in pharmacologic treatments, particularly in underserved populations, accessible, non-invasive interventions like electrical stimulation (ES) that promote osteogenesis are needed. We evaluated the effects of a portable low-frequency ES device on bone health in premenopausal women. METHODS: In a 10-week, double-blind, randomized pilot study, 48 healthy premenopausal women aged 18 - 45 were assigned to either a stimulation (STIM) or placebo (NSTIM) group. Part

The gene expression signature of electrical stimulation in the human brain.

Direct electrical stimulation has been used for decades as a gold standard clinical tool to map cognitive function in neurosurgery patients1-8. However, the molecular impact of electrical stimulation in the human brain is unknown. Here, using state-of-the-art transcriptomic and epigenomic sequencing techniques, we define the molecular changes in bulk tissue and at the single-cell level in the human cerebral cortex following direct electrical stimulation of the anterior temporal lobe in patients undergoing neurosurgery. Direct electrical stimulation surprisingly had a robust and consistent impa

Integrating direct electrical brain stimulation with the human connectome.

Neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions are a major public health concern for which new therapies are urgently needed. The development of effective therapies relies on the precise mapping of the neural substrates causally involved in behaviour generation. Direct electrical stimulation (DES) performed during cognitive and neurological monitoring in awake surgery is currently considered the gold standard for the causal mapping of brain functions. However, DES is limited by the focal nature of the stimulation sites, hampering a real holistic exploration of human brain functions at the netw

Calcium Imaging In Electrically Stimulated Flat-Mounted Retinas.

Retinal dystrophies are a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Extensive efforts are underway to develop advanced retinal prostheses that can bypass the impaired light-sensing photoreceptor cells in the degenerated retina, aiming to partially restore vision by inducing visual percepts. One common avenue of investigation involves the design and production of implantable devices with a flexible physical structure, housing a high number of electrodes. This enables the efficient and precise generation of visual percepts. However, with each technological advancement, there arises a need for a reli

"Quadripolar" Transcranial Electrical Stimulation for Motor Evoked Potentials.

PURPOSE: To determine if transcranial electrical stimulation (TES)-induced motor evoked potentials (MEPs) are of higher amplitude when using two electrodes as anodes and two as cathodes, known as "quadripolar stimulation." METHODS: Patients who underwent TES MEP monitoring in which control, bipolar stimulation and four variations of quadripolar stimulation were used were evaluated. The bipolar stimulation montage was C3-C4 (C3 was used as anode for stimulation first, then the polarity was switched to stimulate the contralateral side). Four quadripolar montages were used: C3/C1-C4/C2 (step 1),

Peripherical Electrical Stimulation for Parkinsonian Tremor: A Systematic Review.

Parkinsonian tremor is one of the most common motor disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Compared to oral medications and brain surgery, electrical stimulation approaches have emerged as effective and non-invasive methods for tremor reduction. The pathophysiology, detection and interventions of tremors have been introduced, however, a systematic review of peripherical electrical stimulation approaches, methodologies, experimental design and clinical outcomes for PD tremor suppression is still missing. Therefore, in this paper, we summarized recent studies on electrical stimulat

Mechanisms of electrical stimulation in eye diseases: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: In the last two decades, electrical stimulation (ES) has been tested in patients with various eye diseases and shows great treatment potential in retinitis pigmentosa and optic neuropathy. However, the clinical application of ES in ophthalmology is currently limited. On the one hand, optimization and standardization of ES protocols is still an unmet need. On the other hand, poor understanding of the underlying mechanisms has hindered clinical exploitation. MAIN TEXT: Numerous experimental studies have been conducted to identify the treatment potential of ES in eye diseases and to

Intracerebral electrical stimulations of the temporal lobe: A stereoelectroencephalography study.

The functional anatomy of the anteromesial portion of the temporal lobe and its involvement in epilepsy can be explored by means of intracerebral electrical stimulations. Here, we aimed to expand the knowledge of its physiological and pathophysiological symptoms by conducting the first large-sample systematic analysis of 1529 electrical stimulations of this anatomical region. We retrospectively analysed all clinical manifestations induced by intracerebral electrical stimulations in 173 patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy with at least one electrode implanted in this area. We found that

Systematic Review on Intra- and Extracochlear Electrical Stimulation for Tinnitus.

Several electrical stimulation patterns of the auditory nerve have been described for tinnitus relief, but there is no consensus on the most effective stimulation pattern. Therefore, we aim to systematically review the literature on the effect of intra- and extracochlear electrical stimulation patterns as a treatment option for patients with tinnitus. Only studies on intra- and extracochlear electrical stimulation for patients with tinnitus were included if the stimulation used did not concern standardized CI stimulation patterns to primarily rehabilitate hearing loss as intervention. Establishment of Acute Pontine Infarction in Rats by Electrical Stimulation.

Pontine infarction is the most common stroke subtype in the posterior circulation, while there lacks a rodent model mimicking pontine infarction. Provided here is a protocol for successfully establishing a rat model of acute pontine infarction. Rats weighing about 250 g are used, and a probe with an insulated sheath is injected into the pons using a stereotaxic apparatus. A lesion is produced by the electrical stimulation with a single pulse. The Longa score, Berderson score, and beam balance test are used to assess neurological deficits. Additionally, the adhesive-removal somatosensory test i

Non-invasive Transcranial Electrical Stimulation in Movement Disorders.

Dysfunction within large-scale brain networks as the basis for movement disorders is an accepted hypothesis. The treatment options for restoring network function are limited. Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation are now being studied to modify the network. Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is also a portable, cost-effective, and non-invasive way of network modulation. Transcranial direct current stimulation and transcranial alternating current stimulation have been studied in Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremor, and ataxia. Tr
