The moderating role of father involvement in the association between maternal depression and child nutrition: A cross-sectional study in rural Malawi.

This study highlights the critical role of fathers in improving child dietary diversity in low-resource setting, particularly in the context of maternal mental health challenges. Using cross-sectional data of 333 mother-father-child triads in rural Malawi, we examine the association between paternal involvement and child dietary diversity among children aged between 24-60 months. Our findings show that greater father involvement is significantly associated with higher child dietary diversity scores, even after accounting for maternal depressive symptoms. Importantly, we identify a significant

Why perversion?: 'False love' and the perverse pact.

In this paper, the author works with the awareness that perversion is a socially, historically and theologically loaded term, at the same time as it may be the latest frontier in psychoanalysis, both clinically, and in relation to contemporary art and culture which emphasize the perverse. Positioning itself against tendencies to deny the existence of a category of 'perversion' or, inversely, to abuse it for the power that accrues from the act of diagnosing, she also points to other liabilities in the history of the treatment of this term, such as the narrowing down of perversion to the exclusi

The role of mothers and fathers in children's health care use.

We use rich longitudinal administrative medical records to examine the separate roles of mothers and fathers in children's health care use. We do so distinguishing between different types of care and child sex. Overall, we find limited evidence of an association between parents' education and their children's health care use. Mothers' health care use appears in general more strongly associated than fathers' health care use with that of their children. On the other hand, for some types of care (GP and specialist visits), these associations in health care use are stronger within the same-sex par

Role of psychosocial stress in the cause of pica.

Fifty children with iron deficiency anemia with pica and 50 children with iron deficiency anemia without pica were studied to detail their psychosocial environment. Children in two groups were individually matched for age, sex, socioeconomic class, and degree of anemia. The pica group had significantly greater stress scores (7.6 +/- 2.8) as compared to the control group (4.1 + 2.1; t= 5.05; p less than 0.001). The stress factors that were significantly associated with pica were maternal deprivation (p less than 0.01), child's caretaker other than the mother (p less than 0.001), parental separa

Maternal and paternal overprotection of children born preterm: Relations to child and parental factors.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlates of observed overprotective behaviors of mothers and fathers of preterm-born preschoolers. Participants included 85 children born prematurely (gestational age <37 weeks) and their parents, assessed when children were 12, 24, and 42 months old. Observed overprotection was measured through the standardized observation of a parent-child interaction. The examined correlates included parent-reported perception of their protective behavior, parental gender, child neonatal risk, child development, parent-reported perception of child vulnerabi

Maternal predictors of children's social cognition: an attachment perspective.

BACKGROUND: This paper assumes that the capacities to (1) openly acknowledge, and (2) elaborate a resourceful plan for coping with distress in the self and others are central features of social cognition. METHOD: These capacities were assessed in a sample (N = 51) of 11-year-old children whose mothers and fathers had previously provided Adult Attachment Interviews (AAIs) before their children were born. The children were shown six line-drawn sequences of child(ren), with peer(s) and/or family in diverse situations involving some moderate distress. The experimenter described the adversity show

Parental responses to positive and negative emotions in anxious and nonanxious children.

This study examined the role of multiple children's emotions and parental anxiety during parent-child interactions of anxiety disordered (AD) and nonanxious (NA) children ages 7 to 13 years. Families (mother, father, child) each discussed three recent and real separate situations in which the child experienced anxiety, anger, and happiness. Results revealed significant differences in behavior between parents of AD and NA children. Maternal behavior, but not paternal behavior, was related to the emotion the child was experiencing. Mothers of AD children displayed greater intrusive involvement t

Worries and anxiety in parents of adult survivors of childhood cancer: A report from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study-Parents.

OBJECTIVE: Having a child diagnosed with cancer is distressing for parents. We aimed to compare worries and anxiety in parents of adult childhood cancer survivors with parents of the Swiss general population (GP-parents), and to evaluate characteristics associated with worry in parents of survivors. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, population-based study in parents of survivors (survivors aged ≥20 years at study, ≤16 years at diagnosis, >5 years post diagnosis) and GP-parents (≥1 child aged ≥20 years at study). We used the Worry and Anxiety Questionnaire (WAQ), and computed the WAQ total s

Relative and absolute stability in perceived parenting behaviour: a longitudinal study with children and adolescents.

Patterns of relative and absolute stability in parental behaviour with children and adolescents are reported. The sample comprised 523 youth (58.7% girls). Data were collected at three time periods: T1 (M age = 11.1 yr.), T2 (M age = 12.2 yr.), and T3 (M age = 13.2 yr.), each separated by one year. According to children's reports, relative consistency was moderate in both mothers and fathers, particularly as regards communication and strict control. In contrast, as children got older, parental rearing practices related to strict control and hostility decreased. There was a similarity between f

Social realities in remote villages: Infant and young child feeding in Kirewa, Uganda.

Understanding infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Africa requires an examination of the social context. Social relationships influence people through mechanisms such as social support, social influence, social engagement, access to resources and negative social interactions. This study explores how these mechanisms manifest in IYCF in remote villages in Uganda. In 2018, we conducted two focus group discussions each with mothers, fathers and grandparents, ande interviews with two clan leaders, six village health teamers (VHT) and four healthcare workers (HCW). We deductively sear

Higher offspring birth weight predicts the metabolic syndrome in mothers but not fathers 8 years after delivery: the Pune Children's Study.

In Europid populations, low birth weight of offspring predicts insulin resistance in the mother and cardiovascular disease in both parents. We investigated the association between birth weight of offspring and obesity and cardiovascular risk in the parents of 477 8-year-old children born at the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Pune, India. Eight years after the birth of the child, mothers (33 years of age, n = 459) of heavier babies were taller and more obese (BMI, fat mass, and waist circumference, all P < 0.001) than mothers of lighter babies. Increasing offspring birth weight predicted higher

[Analysis of PNPLA1 gene mutation in a child with ichthyosis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child with ichthyosis. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was carried out to detect genomic copy number variants (CNVs) and variant of the medical exome. Candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS: No disease-related CNV was identified in the patient. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the child has carried compound heterozygous variants of the PNPLA1 gene, including a previously known pathogenic c.100G>A (p.Ala34Thr) mutation and a novel c.56C>A (p.Ser19x) variant which was predicted to be a pathogenic according to the A

"I Want a Second Chance": Experiences of African American Fathers in Reentry.

With over 700,000 people on average released from prison each year to communities, greater attention is warranted on the experiences and needs of those who are parents and seeking to develop healthy relationships with their children and families. This study seeks to explore the experiences of African American fathers in reentry. Qualitative data from 16 African American men enrolled in a fellowship program for fathers were collected from a focus group and analyzed for common themes and using standpoint theory. Four themes emerged that focused on fathers' commitment toward healthy and successfu

Perceived economic strain exacerbates the effect of paternal depressed mood on hostility.

Depression in fathers has been associated with impaired parenting, which, in turn, may function as a central environmental mechanism underlying the adverse effects of paternal depression on children's development. Despite this, evidence suggests that many depressed fathers are able to maintain positive relationships with their children, and little is known about factors associated with better or worse parenting outcomes when fathers experience depression. Using two waves of prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample of fathers and their high school-aged adolescent offspring (N = 32

Parent-daughter emotional dyssynchrony correlates with personality and psychopathology in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a major concern in adolescents. Attachment problems contribute to its pathogenesis and maintenance. This research explores the relationship between parent-daughter emotional dyssynchrony and the psychopathology of AN daughters. METHODS: One hundred and fourteen female adolescents with AN and their parents participated in this study. The daughters completed the youth self-report (YSR) and other self-report measures of personality, eating, and general psychopathology. The parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The YSR and CBCL ratings were compa

Forgiveness, and other themes, in women whose fathers killed their mothers.

The purpose of this article is to describe the experiences of adult women who, when they were children, experienced the homicide of their mother by their father. Two qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 31 women survivors of uxoricide to create a qualitative description of the phenomenon. A number of themes have emerged including descriptions of the daughter "seeking understanding," "forgiving the father" (or not), and descriptions of the father in terms of his being her father or in terms of his behavior and the homicide.

Emotional trade-offs of becoming a parent: how social roles influence self-discrepancy effects.

Why do some people suffer from becoming a parent, whereas others do not? New parents' actual selves were related to their own hopes for themselves (ideal self) and to their spouse's sense of their responsibilities (ought self). Prebirth actual-ideal discrepancies predicted increased sadness or dejection after birth (especially for couples in longer marriages), whereas prebirth actual-ought discrepancies predicted decreased nervousness or agitation after birth (especially for mothers and couples with a less "easy" child). Becoming a parent introduces new demands that both interfere with attaini
