[Characteristics of the vestibulo-ocular interaction in patients with unilateral damage of the peripheral part of the vestibular system. The counter-rotation reaction of the eyes (report 4)].

The vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR) was investigated in 40 patients with unilateral injury of the peripheral compartment of the vestibular system during their sinusoidal rotation and gaze fixation at a stationary object. At the stage of vestibular dysfunction decompensation the VOR coefficient showed a significant asymmetry and a decrease during rotation towards the injured side. As the dysfunction was compensated this asymmetry disappeared.

Paraxial analysis of the depth of field of a pseudophakic eye with accommodating intraocular lens.

PURPOSE: To investigate the depth of field of pseudophakic eye implanted with translating optics accommodating intraocular lenses (AIOLs). METHODS: Theoretical analyses using paraxial optics equations were used. The crystalline lens in the Navarro eye model was replaced with an AIOL modeled as a thin-lens system with either a single lens element (1E-AIOL) or two element (2E-AIOL). To quantify the depth of field, a reference limit for retinal blur circle diameter was adopted from typical values of depth of field of the normal eye. Effect of various factors including AIOL type, lens element pow

Management of equine skull fractures using fixation with polydioxanone sutures.

Ten horses presented with severe distortion of the facial contour, crepitus on palpation and mild to moderate epistaxis. Individual horses also showed ocular damage, ptosis, severe dyspnoea and movement of the facial bones concurrent with respiration. The fracture fragments were exposed using a large curvilinear incision and elevated using a retractor, periosteal elevator, chisel or Steinmann pin. The fracture fragments were unstable following reduction and fixation was necessary. Stabilisation was achieved with polydioxanone sutures placed through holes drilled in opposing sides of the fractu

Internuclear and supranuclear disorders of eye movements: clinical features and causes.

Eye movements bring visual stimuli to the fovea and also maintain foveal fixation on a moving target and during head movements. These movements are performed by the ocular motor system that consists of ocular motor nerves and nuclei in the brainstem originating in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, vestibular structures, and the extraocular muscles. The ocular motor system is divided according to anatomic location into infranuclear, nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear components. It is important to distinguish supranuclear and internuclear from nuclear and infranuclear disturbances affecting

Visual Impairment and Ocular Findings in Children With Developmental Delay Attending a Child Development Unit Clinic at a Tertiary Hospital.

Introduction Childhood blindness is largely attributable to preventable causes. In children with developmental delay, identifying ocular morbidity is particularly challenging due to limited cooperation and associated comorbidities. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and spectrum of refractive errors, strabismus, and other ocular findings among children with developmental delay attending a tertiary care center in South India, and to highlight the importance of early ophthalmic screening in this population. Methods This retrospective review included 100 preschool children with developm

A Subconscious Interaction between Fixation and Anticipatory Pursuit.

Ocular smooth pursuit and fixation are typically viewed as separate systems, yet there is evidence that the brainstem fixation system inhibits pursuit. Here we present behavioral evidence that the fixation system modulates pursuit behavior outside of conscious awareness. Human observers (male and female) either pursued a small spot that translated across a screen, or fixated it as it remained stationary. As shown previously, pursuit trials potentiated the oculomotor system, producing anticipatory eye velocity on the next trial before the target moved that mimicked the stimulus-driven velocity.

The Effect of Conjunctival Flap Transplantation, Pterygium Excision, and Scleral Fixation Surgery in Treating Pterygium Combined with Conjunctival Laxity and Its Impact on Postoperative Complications.

OBJECTIVE: Pterygium and conjunctival laxity are common ocular conditions that can significantly affect visual comfort and quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to investigate ways to treat these problems. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of same-stage trapezoidal conjunctival flap transplantation, pterygium excision, and scleral fixation surgery versus staged pterygium excision, crescentic conjunctiva excision, and scleral fixation surgery in treating pterygium combined with conjunctival laxity. The study also aimed to evaluate the impact of these surgical techniques on pos

Transzygomatic Kirschner wire fixation for the treatment of blowout fracture.

BACKGROUND: Total orbital floor reconstruction with sheet-shape materials is available for the treatment of extensive and crushed-type blowout fractures. Simple blowout fractures, on the other hand, require only manual reduction without fixation. Although several types of blowout fractures do not require total reconstruction, some fixation is usually necessary. METHODS: Eighteen cases of blowout fracture were treated with transzygomatic Kirschner wire fixation between 2002 and 2009. This technique was applied to simple fracture cases in which periorbital soft tissue re-herniated through the f

Vestibular patients generate more regular head movements than healthy individuals during gaze-stabilization exercises.

The vestibular system is vital for maintaining stable vision during daily activities. When peripheral vestibular input is lost, patients initially experience impaired gaze stability due to reduced effectiveness of the vestibular-ocular-reflex pathway. To aid rehabilitation, patients are often prescribed gaze-stabilization exercises during which they make self-initiated active head movements. Analyzing statistical pattern of sequences of stereotyped behaviors to characterize degrees of randomness or repeatability has proven to be a powerful approach for diagnosing disease states, yet this appro

Absence of spontaneous head tilt in superior oblique muscle palsy.

We used the head-tilt test--based on an imbalance between the function of a paretic superior oblique muscle and its homonymous superior rectus muscle, rather than on an anomaly of cycloversion-to test three patients with superior oblique muscle palsies. Spontaneous ocular torticollis was absent if a patient had poor vision in one eye or if his vertical fusional amplitudes were of such magnitude that he was able to overcome his vertical deviation in all positions of gaze. These latter instances, though rare, may be more common than reports indicate.
