Bone evaluation in paediatric chronic kidney disease: clinical practice points from the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology CKD-MBD and Dialysis working groups and CKD-MBD working group of the ERA-EDTA.

Mineral and bone disorder (MBD) is widely prevalent in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with significant morbidity. CKD may cause disturbances in bone remodelling/modelling, which are more pronounced in the growing skeleton, manifesting as short stature, bone pain and deformities, fractures, slipped epiphyses and ectopic calcifications. Although assessment of bone health is a key element in the clinical care of children with CKD, it remains a major challenge for physicians. On the one hand, bone biopsy with histomorphometry is the gold standard for assessing bone he

Best practice guidelines for standardised placental pathology reporting: A recommendation by perinatal pathology working group, Chapter of Perinatal and Paediatric Pathology, College of Pathologists, Malaysia.

Placental pathology provides critical diagnostic, prognostic and clinicopathological insights into maternal-foetal outcomes. While frequently discarded post-delivery, macroscopic and histopathological evaluation can clarify adverse outcomes, including stillbirth, neonatal death, prematurity, foetal growth restriction, hydrops, infection and complicated multiple gestations. This paper outlines a standardized framework for placental examination by covering rationale, indications, specimen handling, sampling and reporting designed for universal implementation across all public, private and academ

Analyzing practice pattern in treating partial-thickness rotator cuff tears: a dual perspective from national database and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons PARCIAL research group.

BACKGROUND: Partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs), often considered less severe than full-thickness rotator cuff tears (FTRCTs), can be equally symptomatic. Despite the prevalence of PTRCTs, scholarly attention has predominantly focused on FTRCTs, resulting in a relative neglect of PTRCTs. This study aimed to assess the incidence of surgical repairs for PTRCTs in the United States (U.S.) using the Nationwide Ambulatory Surgery Sample (NASS) database and delineate practice patterns among a group of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) members. METHODS: The NASS database, represe

When theory beats practice: the implementation of competency-based education at healthcare workplaces : Focus group interviews with students, mentors, and educators of six healthcare disciplines.

BACKGROUND: Work-integrated learning constitutes a large part of current healthcare education. During the last decades, a competency-based educational (CBE) approach has been introduced to reduce the theory-practice gap and to promote continuous competency development. Different frameworks and models have been developed to support CBE implementation in practice. Although CBE is now well-established, implementation at healthcare workplaces remains complex and controversial. This study aims to explore how students, mentors, and educators from different healthcare disciplines perceive the impleme

COVID-19 and Substance Use Disorders: Recommendations to a Comprehensive Healthcare Response. An International Society of Addiction Medicine Practice and Policy Interest Group Position Paper.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is escalating all over the world and has higher morbidities and mortalities in certain vulnerable populations. People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) are a marginalized and stigmatized group with weaker immunity responses, vulnerability to stress, poor health conditions, high-risk behaviors, and lower access to health care services. These conditions put them at a higher risk of COVID-19 infection and its complications. In this paper, an international group of experts on addiction medicine, infectious diseases, and disaster psychiatry explore the possible raised concern

Botulinumtoxin Type-A (BoNTA) in the Management of Refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia: An Expert-Opinion, Practice-Oriented Narrative Review on Behalf of the GRASP Study Group.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) ranks among the most excruciating neuropathic pain syndromes, characterized clinically by multiple daily episodes of unilateral, paroxysmal, electric shock-like facial pain. The daily activities and quality of life of affected patients are profoundly diminished. First-line pharmacological agents, such as carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine, provide initial relief for many patients. However, a significant proportion eventually develops refractory symptoms or experience intolerable adverse effects, leading to the discontinuation of traditional oral medications. For these pa

Charting the Future of Canadian Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Laboratory Testing: A Canadian Leukemia Study Group Current State Mapping of Diagnostic AML Laboratory Practice.

Clinical decision making in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) critically relies on rapid genomic characterization. To better understand the AML diagnostic landscape in Canada, the Canadian Leukemia Study Group (CLSG) conducted a survey of laboratory hematology leadership (n = 18) at 16 laboratories across 10 provinces, administered using Google Forms in September 2024. Nearly all surveyed sites were equipped to deliver a full suite of testing platforms through existing on-site infrastructure or laboratory partnerships. Reporting practices varied in terms of genomic integration into bone marrow resu

'We are the engine': a focus group study on clinical practice guideline development with European patient advocates for rare congenital malformations and/or intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with rare congenital malformations and/or intellectual disability often face challenges in accessing appropriate healthcare. Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) may serve as a tool to provide evidence-based care for rare diseases, but their development is complex, and the views of affected individuals and families often remain unknown. METHODS: Patient advocates of the European Reference Network ITHACA (Intellectual disability, TeleHealth, Autism and Congenital Anomalies) participated in focus groups in which their experiences with and perspectives on CPG use an

Noninvasive Diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Elaboration on Korean Liver Cancer Study Group-National Cancer Center Korea Practice Guidelines Compared with Other Guidelines and Remaining Issues.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be diagnosed based on characteristic findings of arterial-phase enhancement and portal/delayed "washout" in cirrhotic patients. Several countries and major academic societies have proposed varying specific diagnostic criteria for HCC, largely reflecting the variable HCC prevalence in different regions and ethnic groups, as well as different practice patterns. In 2014, a new version of Korean practice guidelines for management of HCC was released by the Korean Liver Cancer Study Group (KLCSG) and the National Cancer Center (NCC). According to the KLCSG-NCC Kor

Best practice options for hair removal in patients with unwanted facial hair using combination therapy with laser: guidelines drawn up by an expert working group.

Hirsutism is a common disorder affecting between 5 and 15% of the population. One of the most devastating consequences of hirsutism is the presence of unwanted facial hair. Treatment of hirsutism involves a two-pronged approach: treating the underlying cause and reduction of visible hair. Laser hair removal is one of the most effective options for reducing visible hair, however, it may not be wholly effective in all patients and combination therapy may need to be considered. Pharmacological therapy is often used in combination with mechanical hair removal due to the time needed for the drug tr

Multi-center investigation on the influence of clinical characteristics and molecular group A streptococci diagnostics on the management of tonsillopharyngitis in pediatric practices in Berlin-BASE study.

UNLABELLED: A clear distinction between viral, bacterial, or non-infectious tonsillopharyngitis is not always possible due to overlapping clinical symptoms. Patient near point-of-care diagnostics may contribute to supporting clinical assessment and, in turn, guide antibiotic treatment. We performed a prospective cluster-randomized multi-center study with cross-over design in 25 pediatric offices located in and around the city of Berlin, Germany, from December 2023 to May 2024. The primary objective was to determine whether using a rapid molecular point of care test (mPOC) reduces antibiotic pr

Making VFA Part of Standard Clinical DXA Assessment for Osteoporosis Care: Recommendations From the International Working Group on DXA Best Practices.

Fracture risk is strongly dependent on the presence of previous fractures, especially vertebral. In this paper, we focus on the use of vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), as vertebral fractures can be clinically silent, and their identification is critical for optimal bone health management. Our tool was to inform health care professionals about the clinical utility of accurate recognition and classification of vertebral fractures. A comprehensive narrative review was conducted on the clinical relevance of diagnosing vertebral fractures, the technic

Effects of Statistical Practices for Longitudinal Group Comparison of the Penetration-Aspiration Scale on Power and Effect Size Estimation: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study.

Multiple bolus trials are administered during clinical and research swallowing assessments to comprehensively capture an individual's swallowing function. Despite valuable information obtained from these boluses, it remains common practice to use a single bolus (e.g., the worst score) to describe the degree of dysfunction. Researchers also often collapse continuous or ordinal swallowing measures into categories, potentially exacerbating information loss. These practices may adversely affect statistical power to detect and estimate smaller, yet potentially meaningful, treatment effects. This st
