Infective endocarditis is a rare complication of ulcerative colitis. We report on a 22-year-old man, who had been treated of ulcerative colitis for 5 years. He presented with dyspnea on effort. In spite of medical treatment, he developed congestive heart failure. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a large perforation on the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, and prolapses of the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve with rupture of the chordae. The patient underwent mitral valve repair with an autologous pericardial patch on the anterior leaflet combined with butterfly resection and sutu

Echocardiographic data are reported for 84 diabetes mellitus patients with reference to their age, severity and clinical pattern of diabetes and its treatment. There was left-ventricular hypertrophy, reduced end-diastolic volume and reduced stroke volume, particularly so in moderate and severe diabetes mellitus. In young insulin-treated patients (11%) with labile glycemia, an obvious mitral prolapse and, perhaps, also aortic valve prolapse were detected. This category of patients would frequently exhibit heart rate and conductivity disorders, such as second-degree sino-auricular block and freq

Tricuspid stenosis secondary to ventricular pacemaker leads is uncommon. We present a unique case of iatrogenic tricuspid stenosis secondary to fusion of the valve leaflets to transvenous implanted pacing leads. This occurred in an adult with childhood repaired Tetralogy of Fallot and high grade surgical heart block following multiple pacemaker procedures. The case was complicated by superior vena cava (SVC) and innominate vein stenosis secondary to implanted pacing leads, severe tricuspid valve (TV) stenosis, perforation of the heart by one of the implanted transvenous ventricular pacing lead

Through the comparison of responses of normal volunteers, assessment of autonomic function under abnormal clinical conditions focused on the detection of dysautonomia involving both the parasympathetic and adrenergic limbs in patients with Chagas heart disease, post-cardiac surgery, chronic heart failure, mitral valve prolapse, and hyperthyroidism. In particular, the autonomic impairment observed in Chagas disease patients involved predominantly the parasympathetic control of heart rate at the sinus node level, and the adrenergic innervation at the myocardial ventricular level. The autonomic d

The etiology of valvular heart diseases (VHD) has changed in the last 50 years in the industrialized countries. A significant reduction in the incidence of rheumatic fever and its sequelae, increase in life expectancy, recognition of new causes of VHD and advancement in technology are responsible for the metamorphosis of the etiology of VHD. Heritable disorders of connective tissue (marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, adult polycystic kidney disease, floppy mitral valve/mitral valve prolapse); congenital heart disease (bicuspid aortic valve); inflammatory/immunologic disorders (rheumatic

OBJECTIVE: Pectus excavatum is the most prevalently encountered deformity of the thoracic wall. It can be accompanied by congenital anomalies.
METHODS: The cardiac findings of 36 children who were diagnosed at the Thoracic surgery outpatient clinic of our university between 10 February 2021 and 1 October 2021 and 57 healthy children in a similar age group were analyzed.
RESULTS: We determined that the pectus excavatum patients in our study had a higher risk of having mitral insufficiency, mitral valve prolapse, tricuspid valve prolapse, cardiac malposition, and congenital heart disease.

A backward flow signal in the left atrium masquerading as mitral regurgitation was studied by a pulsed Doppler method. The subjects consisted of 20 normal volunteers, 12 cases with mitral valve prolapse syndrome, five cases with rheumatic mitral regurgitation, five cases with lone atrial fibrillation, four cases with asymmetric septal hypertrophy and three cases with the Björk-Shiley tilting disc valve in the mitral position. In two-dimensional echocardiography combined with pulsed Doppler method, a Doppler signal was recorded by locating a sample volume in the left atrium. In all of the cases

Early cardiovascular intervention, such as valve repairs, can extend the life expectancy of patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) by improving blood flow, preventing regurgitation, and optimizing preload and afterload. These improvements enhance ventricular function, ultimately reducing both cardiac and respiratory symptoms. More commonly, patients with MFS can develop aortic root dilation and mitral valve prolapse as a result of a diseased valve. The combination of cardiac repairs and proper medication adherence can decrease the mortality risk linked with MFS. More specifically, aortic and mitr

It is well known that congenital heart abnormalities are common in children with Down's syndrome. However there are few studies on cardiac abnormalities in adults with Down's syndrome. Therefore, we estimated cardiac abnormalities by means of echocardiography in 30 institutionalized Japanese adults with Down's syndrome, but without cardiac symptoms. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed an incidence of 26.7% in mitral valve prolapse and 20% increase of echo brightness in the mitral valve. Doppler echocardiography revealed an incidence of 16.7% in mitral valve regurgitation, and 13.3% in aort

We carried out a detailed clinical, epidemiological, and echocardiographic study in 41 patients < or = 14 years of age who were admitted in a public hospital in Salvador, Brazil, with severe rheumatic heart disease. Mitral insufficiency was severe in 90%, and moderate in 10%, of the patients. A posteriorly directed jet was seen in 93% of the patients. We identified three mechanisms producing the regurgitation: prolapse of the aortic leaflet of the mitral valve in 13 (32%) patients, rupture of tendinous cords in 14 (34%), and a retracted, non-coapting mural leaflet in 14 (34%). The mean ages, w

The fibrous annulus of the mitral valve plays an important role in valvular function and cardiac physiology, while normal variation in the size of cardiovascular anatomy may share a genetic link with common and rare disease. We derived automated estimates of mitral valve annular diameter in the 4-chamber view from 32,220 MRI images from the UK Biobank at ventricular systole and diastole as the basis for GWAS. Mitral annular dimensions corresponded to previously described anatomical norms, and GWAS inclusive of 4 population strata identified 10 loci, including possibly novel loci (GOSR2, ERBB4,

To assess the nature and distribution of cardiovascular abnormalities associated with mixed connective tissue disease, we studied 38 patients with overlapping clinical manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus, progressive systemic sclerosis and polymyositis, and circulating antibodies to nuclear ribonucleoprotein. The protocol included taking a medical history and a physical echocardiogram, and pulmonary function tests. Cardiac catheterization was performed on 17 patients. Postmortem examination was performed on four of the five patients who died during follow-up. Acute pericarditis and/

Acute cardiopulmonary distress in pregnancy always carries exceptionally arduous challenge for physicians. Here we report a patient who sustained spontaneous chordae tendineae rupture complicated with severe mitral regurgitation and acute pulmonary edema during peripartum period. Probable causes of chordae tendineae rupture include mitral valve prolapse, infectious endocarditis, congenital heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, ischemic heart disease, connective tissue diseases, previous mitral valve surgery or pregnancy itself. The pathophysiology of spontaneous chordae tendineae rupture due

The prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) at birth was studied in 1,734 consecutive newborns without congenital structural heart disease. We have not identified any case of an unequivocal pattern of MVP using auscultatory and echocardiographic diagnostic criteria. Our data argue for the concept that MVP is an acquired disease.

BACKGROUND: Flail mitral leaflet (FML) is a common complication of mitral valve prolapse, often leading to severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and left ventricular dysfunction. In the absence of timely surgical correction, survival is significantly impaired. Early recognition of FML and identification of risk factors is important because early intervention increases the chances of survival.
METHODS: We studied 123 patients undergoing mitral valve surgery for severe MR caused by myxomatous disease. Chart review, echocardiography, and tensile testing were performed.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients

Percutaneous valve repair with the MitraClip represents a new and promising therapeutic option for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR). Mitral valve prolapse and flail leaflet are two major causes of degenerative MR in patients who underwent the MitraClip procedure. Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is also a less-frequent cause of degenerative MR. Among patients with MAC, open surgical treatment or valvular replacement is the treatment of choice for severe MR. Herein we present a case with severe MR secondary to MAC in whom successful percutaneous valve repair was accomplished wit

The NeoChord procedure is an innovative microinvasive, transventricular, beating-heart chordal replacement technique for patients with severe degenerative mitral valve regurgitation resulting from prolapsed or flail leaflets. Use of three-dimensional (3D) transoesophageal echocardiographic imaging is crucial to the physician operator for device navigation during the procedure and to assess the functional results of the repair at the end of the procedure. Photo-realistic, 3D rendering techniques have been recently developed for medical use. Philips TrueVue (Philips Healthcare, Eindhoven, NL) is

BACKGROUND: The spectrum of cardiac diseases in children is distinct from that in adults, and changes with advances in medical care and socioeconomic conditions. Such data are important for the allocation of medical resources, but are unclear. Based on a longitudinal pediatric cardiac screening program, we sought to delineate the spectrum and the trends.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2018, citywide screening programs of cardiac diseases for children were performed in Taipei, Taiwan. Participants, mainly students entering the first grade of elementary school, were evaluated using questionnaires, simpl
