Femur shaft fracture at a young age and the risk of subsequent severe injuries during childhood: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A child who suffers a fracture or a soft-tissue injury at a young age faces an increased risk of subsequent injuries during childhood. This risk could be related to personal and family characteristics or to lower-than-average bone-mineral density. The purpose of this nationwide cohort study was to estimate the association between a femur shaft fracture at a young age and the subsequent risk of hospitalization for injuries during childhood. METHODS: We compared the subsequent risk of hospitalization for injuries during childhood among 1,404 children (exposed) who were one to three

[Analysis of pedestrian injuries in traffic accidents: impact point, injury portion, and injury severity].

We conducted in-depth case studies of traffic accidents involving 118 pedestrians, who were struck by the fronts of bonnet-type cars. The data were reviewed in order to correlate injury severity with pedestrian age, and area of body contact, contact surface of vehicle or the local environment, and impact speed. It was found that head injuries caused by impacts against the top surface of car bonnets and leg injuries caused by front bumpers both showed high incidence rates. Both head and leg injuries caused by striking the vehicle were more severe than those caused by striking the road surface. …

[The combination of fractures of the lower extremity and lesion of the posterior cruciate ligament].

In 400 fractures of the upper and lower leg, 7 patients had an additional lesion of the posterior cruciate ligament. This combination occurs in people, who had a high energy frontal impact in the sitting position. The ligamenteous injury is often overlooked because of multiple injuries and difficulty in examination of a knee joint on a fractured leg. In high velocity injuries of the lower extremity, knee and hip joint injuries must not be overlooked. The diagnosis of knee injury can be made by inspection and palpation of a joint effusion and by a knee joint X-ray, which shows an avulsion fract

Lumbopelvic Control and the Development of Upper Extremity Injury in Professional Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: The baseball-throwing motion requires a sequential order of motions and forces initiating in the lower limbs and transferring through the trunk and ultimately to the upper extremity. Any disruption in this sequence can increase the forces placed on subsequent segments. No research has examined if baseball pitchers with less lumbopelvic control are more likely to develop upper extremity injury than pitchers with more control. PURPOSE: To determine if baseball pitchers who sustain a chronic upper extremity injury have less lumbopelvic control before their injury compared with a grou

Lacerations and Embedded Needles Caused by Epinephrine Autoinjector Use in Children.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Epinephrine autoinjector use for anaphylaxis is increasing. There are reports of digit injections because of incorrect autoinjector use, but no previous reports of lacerations, to our knowledge. We report complications of epinephrine autoinjector use in children and discuss features of these devices, and their instructions for use, and how these may contribute to injuries. METHODS: We queried emergency medicine e-mail discussion lists and social media allergy groups to identify epinephrine autoinjector injuries involving children. RESULTS: Twenty-two cases of epinephrine aut

Acute Achilles tendinopathy: effect of pain control on leg stiffness.

Tendinopathies are a major cause of disability in the athletic population; the main purpose of the treatment of these injuries is to reduce pain and improve function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of NSAIDs on leg stiffness of patients suffering acute unilateral Achilles tendinopathy. Twenty-eight eligible male athletes (aged 39.1 ± 10.3 y) suffering acute Achilles tendinopathy were treated with etoricoxib (120 mg oral once daily) during 7 days. Pain (100-mm visual analogue scale-VAS), analgesic effect (percentage of 100-mm VAS reduction), and leg stiffness were evaluated pr

Mid-flight lateral trunk bending increased ipsilateral leg loading during landing: a center of mass analysis.

Increased lateral trunk bending to the injured side has been observed when ACL injuries occur. The purpose was to quantify the effect of mid-flight lateral trunk bending on center of mass (COM) positions and subsequent landing mechanics during a jump-landing task. Forty-one recreational athletes performed a jump-landing task with or without mid-flight lateral trunk bending. When the left and right trunk bending conditions were compared with the no trunk bending condition, participants moved the COM of the upper body to the bending direction, while the COM of the pelvis, ipsilateral leg, and co

Medial tibial stress syndrome can be diagnosed reliably using history and physical examination.

BACKGROUND: The majority of sporting injuries are clinically diagnosed using history and physical examination as the cornerstone. There are no studies supporting the reliability of making a clinical diagnosis of medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS). AIM: Our aim was to assess if MTSS can be diagnosed reliably, using history and physical examination. We also investigated if clinicians were able to reliably identify concurrent lower leg injuries. METHODS: A clinical reliability study was performed at multiple sports medicine sites in The Netherlands. Athletes with non-traumatic lower leg pain …

A Potentially Dangerous Industrial Projectile Lodged in the Leg of a Steel Factory Worker.

Penetrating injuries due to fragments energized by an explosive event are life/limb-threatening and are associated with poor clinical and functional outcomes. Penetrating injuries are commonly inflicted in attacks with explosive devices. The extremities, especially the leg, are the most commonly affected body areas, presenting a high risk of infection, slow recovery, and the threat of amputation. This report presents a case of a young factory worker who sustained an injury to the leg with a foreign body lodged near the neuro-vascular bundle. A 44-year-old gentleman sustained a projectile injur

Vascular trauma in the groin: contrast between iliac and femoral injuries.

Vascular injuries to the groin are common and often life-threatening. Injuries above the inguinal ligament, to the iliac system, are associated with a 37 percent mortality. Associated intraabdominal injuries are common. These patients must be identified promptly, given broad-spectrum antibiotics and taken immediately to the operating room for exploration through a midline incision. Injuries below the inguinal ligament are usually to the femoral vessels and are rarely fatal. These patients may be evaluated more extensively before leg exploration. Associated intraabdominal injuries are unusual,

Effects of balance training on postural sway, leg extensor strength, and jumping height in adolescents.

Deficits in strength of the lower extremities and postural control have been associated with a high risk of sustaining sport-related injuries. Such injuries often occur during physical education (PE) classes and mostly affect the lower extremities. Thus, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of balance training on postural sway, leg extensor strength, and jumping height in adolescents. Twenty high school students participated in this study and were assigned to either an intervention (n = 10) or control group (n = 10). The intervention group participated in a 4-week balan

The Influence of Ambulatory Aid on Lower-Extremity Muscle Activation During Gait.

CONTEXT: Foot and ankle injuries are common and often require a nonweight-bearing period of immobilization for the involved leg. This nonweight-bearing period usually results in muscle atrophy for the involved leg. There is a dearth of objective data describing muscle activation for different ambulatory aids that are used during the aforementioned nonweight-bearing period. OBJECTIVE: To compare activation amplitudes for 4 leg muscles during (1) able-bodied gait and (2) ambulation involving 3 different ambulatory aids that can be used during the acute phase of foot and ankle injury care. Feeding ecology and behavioral adaptations shape injury patterns in central European ants.

Injuries are common in animals and represent a major threat to individual survival. They can result from inter- or intraspecific conflict, p … g species and genera, ranging from 0% to 38%. Predatory ant species exhibited higher frequencies of leg injuries, whereas omnivorous species were more frequently injured at the antennae. The distribution of injuries likely reflects both foraging ecology and species-specific wound care behaviors, with a high frequency of trochanter injuries potentially indicati …
