Nursing Students' Perceptions of Small-Group Standardized Patient Simulations to Enhance Therapeutic Communication Skills.

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic communication is essential to nursing practice, yet many pre-licensure nursing students report discomfort applying these skills in clinical settings. Standardized patient (SP) simulation offers a controlled environment for practicing communication, yet qualitative research describing students' perceptions of these experiences remains limited. This study explored undergraduate nursing students' perspectives on small-group, communication-focused SP simulations within a psychiatric-mental health nursing course. METHODS: As part of a larger program evaluation, six in-person

Psychiatric nurses' work experiences in non-psychiatric wards in light of their specialized competencies: a qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: As mental health professionals, psychiatric nurses have the knowledge and skills to play a key role in responding to the psychological needs of physically ill patients. However, their presence in non-psychiatric wards is often accompanied by role ambiguity and limited use of specialized competencies. The aim of this study is to explain the experiences of psychiatric nurses concerning the role of their specialized competencies on their work experiences in non-psychiatric wards. METHOD: This qualitative study employed a conventional content analysis approach. Data were collected bet

Time for change is now: Experiences of participants in a community-based approach for iron and folic acid supplementation in a rural county in Kenya, a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS) is recommended by World Health Organization as part of antenatal care to prevent anaemia in pregnancy. In 2010, Kenya adopted this recommendation and the current policy is to provide one combined IFAS tablet for daily use throughout pregnancy, free of charge, in all public health facilities. However, adherence remains low over the years though anaemia in pregnancy remains high. Integration of IFAS into community-based interventions has been recommended because of its excellent outcome. Using Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) to distribute

Hidden work and blurred boundaries: a qualitative study of how community nurses navigate and adapt injectable medication processes to provide timely end-of-life symptom control.

BACKGROUND: With rising numbers of people dying at home, often with complex multimorbidity, community healthcare professionals are increasingly responsible for providing end-of-life care. This care is usually led by community nurses, many of whom do not have specialist palliative care training. A core part of their role is providing end-of-life symptom control using injectable medications prescribed ahead of need and stored in patients' homes. However, cross-organisational systems around injectable medication processes are complex and time consuming. We aimed to explore community nurses' perce

Urinary incontinence products and innovation in care.

Urinary incontinence can have a significant impact on a person's emotional wellbeing and overall quality of life. For community nurses, product selection and reassessment are essential to meet the needs of the patient with incontinence. This involves the judicious use of absorbent products and emerging monitoring technologies. This article summarises current containment options, reviews recent research on technological innovations and explores implications for community nursing practice.

Fungal infections: community nursing approaches to skin and nail care.

Dermatophytes (ringworms) are possibly the most prevalent causes of human infection globally. At least 40 dermatophyte species infect humans. For example, onychomycosis, which is responsible for about half of abnormal nails, may: produce ridging, ingrown nails, bleeding and nail loss; make walking painful; and facilitate secondary bacterial infections. Several diseases increase the risk of onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes, including knee osteoarthritis and poorly controlled diabetes. This article focuses on nursing approaches to managing skin and nail dermatophyte infections. Topical anti

Experiences of relatives of patients with delirium due to an acute health event - A systematic review of qualitative studies.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate relatives' experience of delirium due to an acute health event in a loved person and to compile practical suggestions for health care professionals from these synthesized results. A delirium episode also affects family members who may assist in the diagnosis and recovery from this condition. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Qualitative studies of family members or other caregivers who witnessed patient delirium in a clinical setting were included if

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Future of Nursing Education.

Nursing is the largest health profession, with nearly 4 million providers practicing across acute, primary, and public health care settings. In response to the pandemic, nursing schools halted on-site course delivery and redesigned programs to attenuate risks to students and faculty. Key challenges faced by schools included financial cutbacks, rapid increases in online learning technology, maintaining student academic progression, disruption to clinical learning opportunities, and meeting accreditation standards, while addressing the stress and loss experienced by faculty, staff, and students.

What promotes or prevents greater use of appropriate compression in people with venous leg ulcers? A qualitative interview study with nurses in the north of England using the Theoretical Domains Framework.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate factors that promote and prevent the use of compression therapy in people with venous leg ulcers. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study with nurses using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). SETTING: Three National Health Service Trusts in England. PARTICIPANTS: Purposive sample of 15 nurses delivering wound care. RESULTS: Nurses described factors which made provision of compression therapy challenging. Organisational barriers (TDF domains environmental context and resources/knowledge, skills/behavioural regulation) included heavy/increasing caseloads; lack of

The emerging recognition of cryptosporidium as a health hazard.

Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of waterborne disease in the United States. Cryptosporidiosis occurs as a result of this pathogen and is potentially fatal to the immunosuppressed population. Current water treatment standards will not eradicate the pathogen, resulting in a potential public health hazard. Congress recently passed legislation addressing cryptosporidium, and health policies are pending approval with strong support from the Centers for Disease Control. The implication for community health nursing is that nurses should take on expanded roles as social, political, and economic a

Supporting people with hoarding behaviour: a health promotion perspective.

Hoarding disorder is a complex mental health condition that is increasingly recognised as both a health concern for the individual and a wider public health issue. Supporting individuals with hoarding disorder requires multi-agency intervention, involving collaboration between local authority environmental health teams, fire safety experts, mental health specialists and health and social care professionals, including community nurses. This article examines hoarding behaviour through a health promotion lens, with a focus on the role of the nurse. The author discusses potential underlying causes

Integrating faith and health in the care of persons experiencing homelessness using the parish nursing faculty practice model.

This article describes the Parish Nurse Faculty Practice Model (PNFPM), which provides care to a medically underserved, high-risk homeless population at a community-based, multipartner service center. The PNFPM offers a holistic integrated approach to care of the mind, body, and spirit and encourages those who are homeless to draw on their faith to improve their health. The faculty practice integrates faith and spirituality as a way to improve health and decrease health disparities using Healthy People 2010's Focus Areas to guide the practice. A variety of approaches are used including art the

Lymphatic Filariasis in Children in Haiti.

Using available evidence and astute assessment skills, nurses and advanced practice nurses, as members of an inter-professional team, were able to assess, diagnose, and initiate treatment for a child with lymphatic filariasis within a global health practice setting. The lessons learned during health outreach trips to an underserved commune of Port-au-Prince, Haiti can promote an understanding of appropriate nursing practice related to this parasitic infection. They can also assist nursing students, nurse practitioner students, and faculties as members of a medical outreach team to promote sust
