Overweight as a biomarker for concomitant thyroid cancer in patients with Graves' disease.

The incidence of concomitant thyroid cancer in Graves' disease varies and Graves' disease can make the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules more challenging. Since the majority of Graves' disease patients primarily received non-surgical treatment, identifying biomarkers for concomitant thyroid cancer in patients with Graves' disease may facilitate planning the surgery. The aim of this study is to identify the biomarkers for concurrent thyroid cancer in Graves' disease patients and evaluate the impact of being overweight on cancer risk. This retrospective cohort study analyzed 122 patien

Genetic variation in NOTCH1 is associated with overweight and obesity in Brazilian elderly.

Excessive weight (overweight and obesity) is a common disorder involving genetic and environmental factors, associated with cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, and others. NOTCH1 is critical for the maintenance of stem cells and adult tissues, being reported as a key player in metabolism and adipogenesis in animals. Thus, we test the hypothesis that NOTCH1 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with excessive weight. Participants from the census-based cohort SABE (Saúde, Bem Estar e Envelhecimento-Health, Well-Being, and Aging), carried out in the city of São Paulo-Brazil,

Magnetic sphincter augmentation for gastroesophageal reflux in overweight and obese patients.

Magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) is a successful treatment option for chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease; however, there is a paucity of data on the efficacy of MSA in obese and morbidly obese patients. To assess the relationship between obesity and outcomes after MSA, we conducted a literature search using MeSH and free-text terms in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane and Google Scholar. The included articles reported conflicting results regarding the effect of obesity on outcomes after MSA. Prospective observational studies with larger sample sizes and less statistical bias are necessary to

Neighborhood deprivation, built environment, and overweight in adolescents in the city of Oslo.

BACKGROUND: Even though the social and built environment characteristics of neighborhoods have been studied as potential determinants of social inequalities in obesity among adults, fewer studies have focused on children. Our first aim was to investigate whether there were differences in the food and physical activity environments between different neighborhood deprivation levels in the city of Oslo. We also explored whether there was an association between the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) among adolescents and (i) neighborhood deprivation levels and (ii) food and physical acti

Omental infarction in an overweight child: conservative treatment is a safe approach.

A previously healthy but overweight (body mass index (BMI) of 24.4) adolescent boy presented with fever and significant right-sided abdominal pain. An abdominal ultrasound scan revealed an omental infarction (OI), which was treated conservatively. OI has been described in overweight teenage children with abdominal trauma but can be missed if not considered. A missed diagnosis could result in an unnecessary laparotomy or laparoscopic surgery. Although CT is the gold standard for diagnosis, ultrasonography is an effective approach to identifying OI in children. The benefits of early diagnosis of

Effects of green tea on lipid profile in overweight and obese women.

The effect of green tea administration on serum lipids' concentrations remains unclear as various investigations, which have explored this topic, have produced conflicting results. Gender might be one of the factors influencing the impact of green tea on the lipid profile. Hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effect of green tea intake on the lipid profile in overweight and obese women. We searched five databases (Web of Science, SCOPUS, Embase, PubMed/Medline, and Google Scholar) using a combination of MeSH and non-MeSH

Cardiometabolic profiles in children and adults with overweight and obesity and down syndrome.

Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) are at increased risk for being overweight/obese, but the associated cardiometabolic risk (CR) is not clear. Cross-sectional anthropometric and clinical laboratory data from a multi-site, international cohort of individuals with DS were analyzed to determine cardiometabolic risk by reporting observed distributions of cardiometabolic biomarkers in overweight/obese individuals with DS throughout the lifespan. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses by age categories determined the distributive percentiles for cardiometabolic biomarkers and tested for ad
