Spatiotemporal patterns of reinfestation by Triatoma guasayana (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in a rural community of northwestern Argentina.

Triatoma guasayana (Wygodzinsky & Abalos) is a secondary vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas), the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, in the Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay. The spatial distribution of T. guasayana in a rural community in northwestern Argentina is described and analyzed using very high spatial resolution satellite imagery, geographic information systems, and spatial statistics. Since a 1992 residual spraying with insecticides of all houses, site-specific domestic and peridomestic reinfestations by triatomine bugs were monitored using various methods semiannual

Organ transplantation in Latin America.

Organ transplantation is currently a form of treatment for end-stage organ disease in Latin America for which enthusiasm appears to be growing both in individual countries as well as in the whole region. The Latin-American Transplant Registry has been a factor in the development of communication among the different countries of the region and a focus for unification. Both renal and extra-renal organ transplantation have increased significantly during 1999 and for kidneys the activity is currently 12% of the world renal transplant statistics. Important evidence for the continuing development an

Interactions between mosquito genetic background and Wolbachia strain affect dengue virus blocking and fitness in South American populations of Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of dengue virus, and the release of mosquitoes infected with the bacterium Wolbachia is an increasingly used strategy to reduce dengue transmission. This approach relies on Wolbachia's ability to suppress virus replication within the mosquito, but the effectiveness of virus suppression and the associated fitness costs may depend on interactions among mosquito genetic background, Wolbachia strain, and dengue virus type. Here, we examined these interactions using mosquito populations from Brazil, Paraguay, and Peru infected with two Wolbachia stra

Frequency of Cryptococcus species and varieties in México and their comparison with some Latin American countries.

Cryptococcosis frequency is increasing in Mexico. Few epidemiologic and clinical surveys exist even though 10-15% of patients with AIDS develop this mycosis. To know the situation about the prevalence and etiological agents of cryptococcosis in our country, a study including isolated Cryptococcus spp. strains took place from 1989 to August 1998. A total of 211 Cryptococcus spp. strains obtained from patients of diverse hospital centers in Mexico City were studied. This study describes cryptococcosis epidemiological data, in our country. C. neoformans was the dominant isolation (97.15%), follow

Genetic diversity and divergence of global and French populations of Septoria steviae, the causative agent of Septoria leaf spot in Stevia rebaudiana.

This study investigates the genetic diversity of worldwide Septoria steviae, the causal agent of Septoria leaf spot on Stevia rebaudiana, focusing on French and Argentine populations. Multi-Locus Sequence Typing (MLST) of five loci (ITS, LSU, CAL, EF1 and ACT) was used to compare the diversity of 14 French and 14 Argentinean new isolates with previously published data from other regions. Phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and LSU loci from 61 isolates from 6 countries confirmed that Paraguayan isolates form a genetically distinct group compared to other populations, highlighting the importance

Genotypic variation among lineages of Trypanosoma cruzi and its geographic aspects.

Isozyme analysis with 18 enzyme loci was conducted on 146 isolates of Trypanosoma cruzi from Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Chile. Forty-four different MLGs (groups of isolates with identical multilocus genotypes) were identified and a phylogeny was constructed. The phylogenetic tree consisted of two main groups (T. cruzi I, T. cruzi II), and the latter was further divided into two subgroups (T. cruzi IIa, T. cruzi IIb-e). Evidence of hybridization between different MLGs of T. cruzi II was found, which means that genetic exchanges seem to have occurre

Maté consumption and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a meta-analysis.

Maté, a tea-like infusion of Ilex paraguariensis, is suspected to be a risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma; however, no meta-analysis on the subject has been performed to date. A meta-analysis of studies reporting the consumption of maté in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was conducted to provide a quantitative estimate of the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma associated with maté consumption. A search was conducted through MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, and Current Contents Connect to April 5, 2012. We calculated pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence i

Comparison of subtypes of penile squamous cell carcinoma from high and low incidence geographical regions.

There is a worldwide geographical variation in the incidence of penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC); some subtypes are HPV-related (warty, basaloid) while others (keratinizing variants) are not. The aims of this study were to compare the distribution of different histological subtypes of PSCC from regions of low (Paraguay, 144 cases) and high (USA, 157 cases) incidence and to identify and compare tumors with and without warty and/or basaloid morphology. The distribution of subtypes in the Paraguayan and the American series was: usual, 49.3 and 46.5%; verrucous, 8.3 and 7.6%; papillary NOS, 7

Remaining Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Spiritual and Psychiatric Reflections on Magnifica Humanitas.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping the ways in which psychiatry understands, predicts, communicates, and responds to mental suffering. Although ethical discussions have rightly emphasised safety, transparency, privacy, accountability, and bias, the psychiatric implications of AI also require deeper anthropological and spiritual reflection. Developed from Paraguay and situated within international psychiatric and spiritual-health scholarship, this conceptual paper examines AI in psychiatry through the lens of Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, which add

Circular economy opportunities in the yerba mate industry: a review.

Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is a tree with simple, evergreen leaves, whose infusion, consumed either hot or cold, is widely popular in South America in the forms of chimarrão, tereré and mate tea. Commercially cultivated in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, its production reaches thousands of tons annually. The use of yerba mate dates back to pre-Columbian populations, and its popularity increased with the arrival of colonizers who also appreciated its natural properties. The cultivation and industrialization of yerba mate generate byproducts such as fruits, stems and leaves wit

Toxicological evaluation of vape liquids circulating in Brazil: Evidence of emerging hazards.

The increasing recreational use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Device (ENDS) poses a serious public health threat, with clear evidence of adverse health effects. Studies over the past 15 years have confirmed the presence of hazardous compounds in the emissions from e-cigarettes and e-liquids. In Brazil, where sales are banned but use is not, this is the first comprehensive study on ENDS in the country. E-liquids were collected through direct user donations and systematically categorized by their origin: Brazil, China, Europe, Paraguay, and the United States. Toxicity assessments were conducte

From the ports to the hinterland. Plague, bacteriology, and politics in Argentina (1899-1940).

In 1899, the first cases of plague were recognised in Paraguay and a few months later in Buenos Aires as part of the third plague pandemic. In the first decades of the twentieth century, plague slowly advanced towards the Argentinian hinterland. In this paper we focus on the production of scientific knowledge about plague in Argentina, where a core of bacteriologists emerged early on. We show how they not only played a central role in the complex process of plague recognition and intervention, but also influenced the scientific development of bacteriology in Argentina and potentially in South

Multi-locus sequencing typing reveals geographically related intraspecies variability of Sporothrix brasiliensis.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by pathogenic Sporothrix species. Among them, Sporothrix brasiliensis is the main species associated with endemic regions in South America, especially Brazil. It is highly virulent and can be spread through zoonotic transmission. Molecular epidemiological surveys are needed to determine the extent of genetic variation, to investigate outbreaks, and to identify genotypes associated with antifungal resistance and susceptibility. This study investigated the sequence variation of different constitutive genes and established a novel multilocus sequenc

Micromorphological study of the upper digestive tract of the Argentine tegu (Salvator merianae).

Argentine black and white tegus (Salvator merianae) are omnivorous lizards native to southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina, and are invasive species in Florida and Georgia, USA. They are opportunistic feeders, which is what allow them to have such a diverse variety of foods. Tegus raised a particular concern due to their adaptive capability to different environments. Our goal was to provide a micromorphology baseline of oesophagus and stomach and correlate findings with their dietary and invasive capabilities. Four Argentine black and white tegus were used for t
