[A case of hypopharyngeal stenosis caused by late radiation injuries--reconstruction of the hypopharynx with myomucosal tongue flap].

The authors reported a 47-year-old man with hypopharyngeal stenosis caused by late radiation injuries. At the age of ten he underwent irradiation (3000rads) to the neck because of the cervical lymphadenopathy. He had keroid skin change at the age of 19, hypothyroidism since 26, right cervical and brachial plexus neuropathy since 33, and paralysis and papilloma of right vocal cord at 34. And at the age of 41 he underwent tracheostomy owing to laryngeal stenosis. In November 1984 (at age 43) he felt abnormal sensation on the throat but had no dysphagia nor misdiglutition. On November 1987 he had

Protective effect of prostaglandin E₁ on radiation-induced proliferative inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in rats.

We examined the effects of prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) on radiation-induced proliferation inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in a rat model. PGE₁ had a protective effect on radiation-induced growth inhibition in keratinocytes in vitro, but not in fibroblasts. Varying concentrations of PGE₁ were subcutaneously administered into the posterior neck region. X-irradiation at a dose of 20 Gy was administrated to the lower part of the back using a lead sheet with two holes 30 min to 1 h before or after the administration of PGE₁. Although X-irradiation

Rosamultin ameliorates radiation injury via promoting DNA injury repair and suppressing oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo.

Radiotherapy remains the preferred treatment option for cancer patients with the advantages of broad indications and significant therapeutic effects. However, ionizing radiation can also damage normal tissues. Unfortunately, there are few anti-radiation damage drugs available on the market for radiotherapy patients. Our previous study showed that rosamultin had antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. However, its anti-radiation activity has not been evaluated. Irradiating small intestinal epithelial cells and mice with whole-body X-rays radiation were used to evaluate the in vitro and in

Repurposing Pharmaceuticals Previously Approved by Regulatory Agencies to Medically Counter Injuries Arising Either Early or Late Following Radiation Exposure.

The increasing risks of radiological or nuclear attacks or associated accidents have served to renew interest in developing radiation medical countermeasures. The development of prospective countermeasures and the subsequent gain of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval are invariably time consuming and expensive processes, especially in terms of generating essential human data. Due to the limited resources for drug development and the need for expedited drug approval, drug developers have turned, in part, to the strategy of repurposing agents for which safety and clinical data are alrea

Symptom burden, psychological distress, and health-related quality of life in cancer survivors with pelvic late radiation tissue injuries

Abstract Purpose Curative radiotherapy for cancer may lead to severe late radiation tissue injuries (LRTIs). However, limited knowledge exists about pelvic cancer survivors’ LRTI symptoms, distress, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We sought to assess the symptom burden, distress, and HRQOL in survivors with established pelvic LRTIs compared to norm populations and to investigate the relation between these factors. Methods Cancer survivors referred for treatment of established pelvic LRTIs were recruited nationwide. LTRIs were assessed with the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composi

The Role and Mechanism of Berberine as a Candidate Drug for the Treatment of Radiation-Induced Intestinal Injury.

Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) is among the most common complications of radiotherapy in patients with abdominaltumours. At present, there are no effective methods for reducing the occurrence or severity of RIII. Berberine (BBR) is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid extracted from Coptis chinensis that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and protective effects on the intestine. A RIII model was established using 10 Gy of X-ray total abdominal irradiation (TAI). The effects of BBR on mice exposed to 10 Gy of X-ray TAI were determined by analysing pathological sections of the mouse intes

Ovarian radiation injury and protection: Mechanisms, delivery-enabled interventions, and future directions.

Incidental ovarian irradiation during pelvic radiotherapy or total-body irradiation leads to irreversible endocrine dysfunction, premature ovarian insufficiency, and infertility in young women with cancer. Current clinical strategies-ovarian transposition, shielding, and organ-at-risk dose constraints-provide only partial protection and offer limited control over temporal exposure or spatial confinement. These limitations underscore the need for delivery-enabled radioprotective systems capable of targeting the ovary with precision, synchronizing protection with radiation fractions, and minimiz

Temporal mapping of radiation-induced neural injury and mitigation in human cortical organoids.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy is a standard-of-care oncological treatment for central nervous system (CNS) malignancies. However, as survival outcomes improve, radiation-induced injury to normal brain tissue has increased in clinical significance. CNS radiation injury is a delayed, multifactorial process characterized by impaired neurogenesis, reactive gliosis, and persistent functional deficits. Mechanistic exploration and development of effective radiation mitigators have been limited by the lack of scalable, human-relevant models. METHODS: Mature human iPSC-derived cortical organoids were

N-CWS promotes the repair of radiation-induced skin injury by enhancing angiogenesis.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced skin injury is a common complication that seriously affects the follow-up treatment and life quality of tumor patients. Nocardia rubra cell-wall skeleton (N-CWS) has been reported to have pro-angiogenesis effects, and its role on RISI remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate its effect on repair of radiation induced skin injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After exposure to 45 Gy X-rays, the irradiated areas of SD rats were treated by N-CWS every 3 days. The radioprotective effects of N-CWS were evaluated by body weight changes, skin scores, H&E staining

Radiation-induced lung injury in the era of combination anticancer therapy: a narrative review.

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) remains a major dose-limiting toxicity of thoracic radiotherapy. In the era of combination anticancer therapy, its recognition and management have become more difficult. Systemic treatments can cause pneumonitis or interstitial lung disease on their own, but they can also change how radiation injury evolves. By sustaining inflammation or delaying repair of the irradiated lung, these agents may convert a typical radiation-related injury into a more complex pulmonary event. For this reason, post-treatment lung injury should not be interpreted solely by radiat

An Update on Dynamic Changes in Cytokine Expression and Dysbiosis Due to Radiation Combined Injury.

The complexity of adverse responses from radiation injury (RI) followed by physical trauma, namely, radiation combined injury (RCI), is unique and more pronounced than either insult alone due to a poor understanding of the integration of these insults at the molecular/cellular/tissue and/or organ levels. It was shown that mice receiving 60Co γ-photon RCI with wounding had a lower LD50/30 than RI alone. This survival synergism was observed in bone marrow and the gastrointestinal system, as evidenced by an increase in γ-H2AX expression in bone marrow cell DNA, loss of circulatory blood cells, el

NVP-AUY922 relieves radiation-induced intestinal injury via regulating EPHX1.

As a common side effect of radiotherapy, radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) greatly affects the prognosis of patients and the efficacy of radiotherapy. Current therapeutic strategies for RIII are still very limited. Thus, the identification of effective radioprotective agents is of great importance. NVP-AUY922 is an HSP90 inhibitor with favorable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. It has been proven to mitigate radiation-induced lung injury. However, its effects on the alleviation of RIII remain unclear. In this study, our data indicated that NVP-AUY922 remarkably increased

The role of HIF-1α-mediated autophagy in ionizing radiation-induced testicular injury.

Testis, as a key organ for maintaining male fertility, are extremely sensitive to ionizing radiation (IR). IR-induced testicular dysfunction and infertility are common adverse effects of radiation therapy in patients with pelvic cancer. To study the phenotype and mechanism of IR-induced testicular injury, the mice were irradiated with different radiation doses (0, 2 and 5 Gy) below the semi-lethal dose for one month. Our present results showed that testicular weight and the serum testosterone levels significantly decreased with the structural injury of the testis in an IR dose-dependent manner
