OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether perceived social support moderated contingency management (CM) outcomes among alcohol-impaired drivers.
METHOD: One hundred forty-five non-mandated adults arrested for driving while intoxicated in Bexar County, Texas, were randomized to 8-week CM (n = 74) or yoked Control (n = 71). Participants (mean age = 37.16 years, SD = 10.61) were predominantly male (77.2%) and Hispanic or Latino (71.0%). Weekly contingency compliance required clinic attendance and transdermal alcohol concentrations below 0.02 g/dL throughout the preceding week. Group-based multi-tr

INTRODUCTION: Growing attention has been paid to the mechanisms underlying Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), yet less is known about how reinforcement-based gaming motives are associated with IGD severity and whether these associations differ by gender.
METHODS: Guided by opponent process theory and the I-PACE model, this study conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 1,252 gamers. Network analysis was used to examine the motivational network of IGD, and network comparison analysis was conducted to assess gender differences, with age and game type controlled in the gender-specific an

Developmental pathways to underage drinking emerge before the second decade of life. Many scientists, however, as well as the general public, continue to focus on proximal influences surrounding the initiation of drinking in adolescence, such as social, behavioral, and genetic variables related to availability and ease of acquisition of the drug, social reinforcement for its use, and individual differences in drug responses. In the past 20 years, a considerable body of evidence has accumulated on the early (often much earlier than the time of the first drink) predictors and pathways of youthfu

Anorexia nervosa (AN) can be considered a result of complex instrumental conditioning. It is postulated that in healthy nonsatiated individuals, the sight and smell of the preferred food, acting as a conditioned stimulus (food CS), activates a memory pattern of associations "eating--desirable sensory input" (approach pattern). This leads to the instrumental reaction of eating which is reinforced by sensory satisfaction. In victims of AN, in addition to the approach pattern the food CS activates another pattern of associations consisting of such components as "eating--obesity--failure" and " no

The purpose of this experiment was to establish discriminative control of responding by an antecedent stimulus using differential punishment because the results of past studies on this topic have been mixed. Three adults with mental retardation who exhibited stereotypy not maintained by social consequences (i.e., automatic reinforcement) participated. For each subject, stereotypy occurred frequently in the presence of a stimulus correlated with nonpunishment of stereotypy and rarely, if ever, in the presence of a stimulus correlated with punishment of stereotypy. Latency measures showed that t

A natural experiment contrasted the social relationships of people with intellectual disabilities ( n = 110) before and after they moved from congregated settings to either personalized accommodation or group homes. Contrasts could also be drawn with individuals who had enduring mental health problems ( n = 46) and who experienced similar moves. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in each person's residence on two occasions approximately 24 months apart. Multivariate statistical analyses were used to determine significant effects. Greater proportions of people living in personalized setting

OBJECTIVE: This population-based study aimed to compare the prevalence rates of social phobia using DSM-III-R and CID-10, based on the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), in a Brazilian community.
METHODS: This survey was carried out in a representative sample of 1,041 residents from Bambuí, Minas Gerais, Brazil (attrition rate = 14.7%). The Brazilian version of the CIDI was used. One-month, one-year and lifetime social phobia prevalence rates were estimated, employing the DSM-III-R and ICD-10 classifications, using the CIDI computer program.
RESULTS: One-month, one-year, an

Gendered violence is not a special type of torture used only in war. Its roots are well established in peacetime. This article discusses parallels between the patterns of everyday domination and aggression during times of peace and war. Further, it discusses how metaphors and acts of rape in peacetime are transformed into symbols and acts of rape for wartime purposes. During peacetime the individual body, especially its essence--sexuality and reproduction--becomes the symbol of everyday domination and aggression. Wartime transforms individual bodies into social bodies as seen, for example, in

As Roder and colleagues propose, we have seen three eras in the development and refinement of social skills training for individuals with schizophrenia. In the 1960s, skills training relied on the use of operant conditioning, as exemplified by the token economy. Reinforcement contingencies succeeded in activating patients with negative symptoms and in improving their social behavior. Contemporary psychiatric rehabilitation can profit from the identification and use of reinforcers to motivate anergic individuals who lack insight to participate actively in community-based programs. During the se

Social relationships, including dominance status, are powerful regulators of mental health, and social experiences impact the continued expression of these behaviors. However, very little is known about the neuronal mechanisms that regulate the positive reinforcing effects of aggression that underlie social dominance, including potential sex differences. To address this gap, we used viral-mediated gene expression in Syrian hamsters to investigate how nucleus accumbens neurons regulate behavioral adaptations caused by aggression and other social interactions in both males and females. We found

People increasingly turn to conversational AI for companionship, emotional support, and well-being, using both purpose-built companion apps, such as Replika and Character.AI, and general-purpose assistants, such as ChatGPT and Claude. While some evidence suggests potential benefits, including short-term reductions in loneliness and mood improvement, several adverse outcomes have been reported in both clinical and nonclinical populations, including emotional dependence, exacerbation of symptoms, and self-harm. The fluent and apparently empathic responses from these models lead users to engage w

Optimal reward learning requires individuals to adjust their learning rates - the extent to which new information replaces old. Learning rates should be higher in volatile environments, where new information is more salient, and lower in stable environments, where the longer-term history of outcomes is more predictive. It is not known, however, whether this adjustment in learning rates changes with age or is associated with better mental health and social functioning. We administered a child-friendly probabilistic reinforcement learning task with both fixed and fluctuating reward schedules to

The current study investigates an experimental anxiety reduction intervention among a highly socially anxious sample (N=108; n=36 per Condition; 80 women). Using a conditioning paradigm, our goal was to modify implicit social anxiety associations to directly test the premise from cognitive models that biased cognitive processing may be causally related to anxious responding. Participants were trained to preferentially process non-threatening information through repeated pairings of self-relevant stimuli and faces indicating positive social feedback. As expected, participants in this positive t

In one experiment and two case studies, we evaluated the impact of training peer tutors without disabilities to provide effective instructional procedures with a student with severe disabilities who exhibited aberrant behaviors in the classroom. Peer tutors received training on how to provide appropriate commands and specific praise statements, as well as to decrease negative statements. In the experiment, two peer tutors were taught these skills in a multiple baseline design. Two case studies further clarified the impact of the peer tutor training. In Case Study 1, one peer tutor received tra

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders and social stress are currently associated with changes in the immune system response by which they induce a proinflammatory state in neurons and glial cells that eventually modulates the reward system.
AIMS: The aim of the present work was to assess the role of the immune TLR4 (Toll-like receptors 4) and its signaling response in the increased contextual reinforcing effects of cocaine and reinforcing effects of ethanol (EtOH) induced by social defeat (SD) stress.
METHODS: Adult male C57BL/6 J wild-type (WT) mice and mice deficient in TLR4 (TLR4-KO) were a

The increasing occurrence of diseases across geographical borders creates a need to understand how information source preferences and trust in those sources influence risk perception across contexts. However, cross-context studies about information sources are not common in health communication and promotion scholarship. Using a survey, the research team compared how information sources, perceived usefulness of Ebola information, interpersonal and social trust and context influence risk perception and self-efficacy in an Ebola-affected (Liberia) and -unaffected (Ghana) country. Respondents fro

Alcohol is a traditional social-bonding reinforcer; however, the neural mechanism underlying ethanol-driven social behaviors remains elusive. Here, we report that ethanol facilitates observational fear response. Observer mice exhibited stronger defensive immobility while observing cagemates that received repetitive foot shocks if the observer mice had experienced a brief priming foot shock. This enhancement was associated with an observation-induced recruitment of subsets of anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) neurons in the observer mouse that were responsive to its own pain. The vicariously acti
