Venom complexity of Bothrops atrox (common lancehead) siblings.

BACKGROUND: Variability in snake venoms is a well-studied phenomenon. However, sex-based variation of Bothrops atrox snake venom using siblings is poorly investigated. Bothrops atrox is responsible for the majority of snakebite accidents in the Brazilian Amazon region. Differences in the venom composition of Bothrops genus have been linked to several factors such as ontogeny, geographical distribution, prey preferences and sex. Thus, in the current study, venom samples of Bothrops atrox male and female siblings were analyzed in order to compare their biochemical and biological characteristics.

Trichothiodystrophy without Associated Neuroectodermal Features in Two Siblings.

Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is characterized by the common feature of sulfur-deficient brittle hair associated with a constellation of neuroectodermal symptoms. There is a wide phenotypic variation in the severity; ranging from isolated hair defect to multiple neuroectodermal symptoms such as photosensitivity, ichthyosis, intellectual impairment, decreased fertility, and short stature. This case report describes TTD in two sisters with only hair fragility and no other associated feature. This case highlights the variable clinical presentation of TTD and the need for regular follow-up in such pat

Renal Involvement in 2 Siblings With Cockayne Syndrome.

Renal involvement in Cockayne syndrome is rare and its pathogenesis is yet unknown. We report herein 2 cases (siblings) with Cockayne syndrome type A confirmed by biochemical and molecular assays. The first case was a 13-year-old girl who presented with nephritic syndrome and a rapidly progressive kidney failure. Her younger sister, 7 years old, exhibited hypertension, hyperfiltration, and microalbuminuria. She had hyperreninemia and hyperaldosteronemia without kidney failure or renal arterial stenosis. Renal biopsy, performed the older sister, revealed cystic focal segmental glomerulosclerosi

Vici syndrome in siblings born to consanguineous parents.

Vici syndrome (OMIM 242840) is a rare syndrome and since its initial description by Vici et al. [1988], only 29 cases have been reported. We describe two brothers from healthy consanguineous Turkish parents with psychomotor delay, congenital bilateral cataracts, high palate, long philtrum, micrognathia, fair hair, and skin. They both had general hypotonia and elevated muscle enzymes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain confirmed agenesis of corpus callosum in both patients. Secundum type atrial septal defect (in Patient 1) and mild mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary insufficiency (in P

Two siblings with cortical dysplasia: Clinico-electroencephalographic features.

The older of two siblings began to have spasms and partial seizures at 1 month of age. Head magnetic resonance imaging showed an abnormal area in the left temporo-parieto-occipital region. Interictal electroencephalogram (EEG) showed a suppression-burst pattern. Adrenocorticotropic hormone stopped the spasms, but the seizures continued. Clonazepam, carbamazepine, zonisamide, and clobazam were ineffective. She underwent focal resection at age 8 months. Postoperatively, the seizures disappeared. Histopathologically, the lesion appeared to be focal cortical dysplasia type IIa. The younger sibling

Familial IPEX syndrome: different glomerulopathy in two siblings.

Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome (OMIM 304790) is a rare hereditary disorder of the immune regulatory system caused by FOXP3 mutations. The clinical features of this syndrome include a wide spectrum of severe autoimmune diseases and renal involvement, mostly due to tubulointerstitial diseases, in some patients. Glomerulopathy of membranous nephropathy (MN) and minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS), however, have also been reported. We encountered two children with IPEX syndrome from the same family. Interestingly, they had different glomerular

[The same nasal tip deformity in three siblings].

Similar to all other system anomalies, congenital nasal anomalies are caused by the defects during embriyogenesis and organogenesis. Nasal tip anomalies are usually accompanied by other systemic pathologies and syndromes. In this article, we report a nose anomaly with the same nasal tip appearance in three siblings.

Lipoid Proteinosis: a case report in two siblings.

Lipoid proteinosis was first reported by Urbach and Wiethe in 1929. It is also known as hyalinosis cutis et mucosae or Urbach-Wiethe disease. It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder and characterized by the infiltration of hyaline material in the skin, oral cavity, larynx, and internal organs. Lipid proteinosis presents early in life. Hoarseness develops in infancy. The classic sign is beaded eyelid papules along the lid margin, also known as 'Monilform Blepherosis'. In India about 30 cases have been reported to date. We report the following case because of its rarity in the Indian literatur

Lipoid proteinosis (Urbach-Wiethe disease) in two siblings.

Lipoid proteinosis is a very rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by deposition of hyaline material in the skin and the upper aerodigestive tract. Hoarseness of voice occurs very early in life and airway obstruction may occur. Characteristic skin lesions include multiple brown atrophic scars over face and distal extremities, beaded papules over the margins of the eyelids and verrucous nodules over the friction bearing areas (elbows, knees). The overall prognosis is good. There is no definitive treatment.

Renal transplantation between siblings with unrecognized Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disease caused by deficiency of the lysosomal hydrolase, α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A). We report a case of a renal transplant recipient with unrecognized Fabry disease who received the allograft from a sibling donor with unrecognized Fabry disease. The recipient began to show a gradual increase of the serum creatinine with mild proteinuria at 3 years after transplantation. Histopathologic examination revealed finely vacuolated podocytes, demonstrated by ultrastructural examination to contain osmophilic myelin bodies. Furthermore, the recipient show

Older Siblings' Contributions to Young Child's Cognitive Skills.

This work finds that older siblings as well as early parenting influence young children's cognitive skills directly or indirectly, for example, Mathematics, and English. Our findings challenge a pervasive view in the economical literatures that early parenting play a dominant role in explaining child development. In economics, early environmental conditions are important to demonstrate the evolution of adolescent and adult cognitive skills (Knudsen, Heckman, Cameron, and Shonkoff, 2006; Cunha and Heckman, 2007), and it establishes causal impacts of early parental inputs and other environmental

The staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) family: SEB and siblings.

Staphylococcus aureus plays an important role in numerous human cases of food poisoning, soft tissue, and bone infections, as well as potentially lethal toxic shock. This common bacterium synthesizes various virulence factors that include staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs). These protein toxins bind directly to major histocompatibility complex class II on antigen-presenting cells and specific Vβ regions of T-cell receptors, resulting in potentially life-threatening stimulation of the immune system. Picomolar concentrations of SEs ultimately elicit proinflammatory cytokines that can induce fever

Multiple unerupted teeth with amelogenesis imperfecta in siblings.

Amelogenesis imperfecta encompasses a group of inherited abnormalities that are generally considered to primarily affect the formation and/or calcification of enamel. This case report describes the unusual presentation of amelogenesis imperfecta in siblings as multiple unerupted teeth, multiple pulpal calcifications, and multiple dilacerations of roots along with the defect in the enamel. The intent of our report is to highlight a rare co-occurrence of amelogenesis imperfecta with multiple morphologic alterations in siblings.

Extensive Gingival Enlargement in Siblings: A case report.

Gingival fibromatosis is characterised by varying degrees of fibrotic gingival overgrowth that can be caused by a variety of aetiological factors. Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare genetic disorder, characterised by a slowly progressive, benign enlargement of keratinised gingiva. The condition may be found in an autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, the former being more common. It usually develops as an isolated disorder but can be one feature of a multisystem syndrome. Accordingly, HGF has been divided into two forms: non-syndromic and syndromic. The g

Siblings presenting with progressive congenital aleukemic leukemia cutis.

Congenital leukemia is infrequent, occurring in <1% of pediatric leukemia patients, and mainly of myeloid lineage. Twenty-five to 30% of congenital leukemia cases present with cutaneous leukemic infiltrates. Rarely, infants will have aleukemic leukemia cutis, presenting with leukemic skin lesions but without systemic symptoms or bone marrow involvement. Few cases of congenital aleukemic leukemia cutis have been reported in the literature. The course of disease is variable as cases of spontaneous resolution have been described. Here we present the first report of siblings with progressive conge

Foregut duplication cysts in siblings: A case report.

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies that result from heterotrophic rests of foregut-derived epithelium in the head, neck, thorax or abdomen. Typically, foregut duplication cysts of the head and neck are diagnosed in asymptomatic children. No single embryologic process has been identified to explain causation. In this case, we report a case of two siblings with foregut duplication cysts-one cyst occurring in the floor of mouth and the other occurring in the thorax as an esophageal duplication. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an event in the literature. Thi
