Tooth positions in the natural and complete artificial dentitions, with special reference to the incisor teeth: an interactive on-line computer analysis.

A comparison of tooth positions and soft tissue profiles was made between samples of edentulous patients recently provided with new complete dentures, and dentate subjects. The dentures were marked with lead foil on the most prominent incisor teeth and labial surfaces of the flanges. Lateral skull radiographs were made with the jaws in centric relation. The dentate subjects were recorded with the teeth held in centric occlusion. Discrete soft and hard tissue landmarks were identified and recorded using an interactive on-line computer system, enabling linear and angular measurements to be made.

Soft-tissue changes in association with anterior maxillary osteotomy: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate and predict soft-tissue changes in the forehead, nose, lips, and chin in association with anterior maxillary osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 20 adult patients (seven men and 13 women, 29.1 years of age immediately before surgery). Both hard- and soft-tissue changes were evaluated using a set of lateral cephalograms taken immediately before and at 7 months after surgery. Pearson correlation coefficients were computed to examine the relationship between hard- and soft-tissue changes. A prediction model was deve

Intussusception: characteristic radiolucencies on the abdominal radiograph.

Six hundred and twenty-five sets of supine and erect abdominal radiographs of 288 patients with the confirmed diagnosis of intussusception (315 episodes) and 310 patients without intussusception were reviewed retrospectively to determine the characteristic radiographic features of intussusception. Among the patients with intussusception, 155 episodes (49%) showed a soft tissue mass and nearly half of these (71) showed characteristic radiolucencies (target, crescentic, or amorphous) in the soft tissue mass. Thirty-five episodes showed the radiolucencies on both the supine and erect radiographs;

Harnessing Machine Learning for Enzyme Enantioselectivity: Toward Intelligent Biocatalysis Engineering.

Enzyme enantioselectivity remains a central challenge in the biocatalytic synthesis of chiral pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Conventional evolution methods, constrained by prolonged experimental cycles and computationally intensive processes, struggle to comprehensively explore complex protein sequences. Although machine learning (ML) has been successfully applied to optimize enzymatic properties, such as catalytic efficiency and stability, its potential in enantioselectivity engineering remains underexploited. This review systematically evaluates how machine learning integrates multimoda

Gene Regulatory Networks for Enhanced Vision-Based Robot Control: A Bio-Inspired Approach.

Vision-based robot control remains a significant challenge due to the sample inefficiency and prolonged training times associated with traditional deep reinforcement learning methods. We propose a novel approach inspired by biological gene regulation, leveraging Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) for efficient and robust robot control. In our approach, robot states are encoded as gene expression levels, and evolutionary optimization is used to learn GRN parameters that map raw visual inputs to motor commands. We evaluate this method on the KukaDiverseObjectEnv benchmark, where robots must grasp d

Harnessing machine learning to decode and optimize bioelectrochemical systems: Principles, progress and future directions.

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) represent an interdisciplinary convergence of biology, electrochemistry, materials science, environmental engineering and mechanical engineering, offering transformative potential for renewable energy generation, wastewater treatment and resource valorization. However, the inherent structural intricacy and mechanistic complexity of BES pose significant challenges to system understanding and optimization. With robust capabilities in pattern recognition and nonlinear system modeling, machine learning (ML) appears to be a good approach to decipher the complex mech

An innovative quantum-fuzzy paradigm for time- and context-sensitive membership: Quantive logic.

Uncertainty in real-world decision problems is rarely static or one-dimensional: the relevance of evidence changes over time, depends on context, and is shaped by interactions between multiple criteria. Classical fuzzy logic provides a flexible scalar notion of membership, but it typically treats each criterion in isolation and does not natively encode temporal or contextual dynamics. Quantum-inspired models, on the other hand, offer rich Hilbert-space representations but are often difficult to integrate with everyday decision-making tasks. This paper proposes Quantive Logic (QL), a quantum-in

Artificial intelligence in pituitary surgery: the path to clinical solutions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly moving from conceptual innovation to high-performing algorithms across the pituitary patient pathway, promising benefits to patients, endocrinologists and surgeons alike. Pre-operatively, machine learning applied to facial imaging and natural language processing of electronic health records show potential for earlier identification of pituitary adenomas and timelier referral from primary providers to a specialist endocrinologist. Intraoperatively, computer vision systems have already augmented surgical training but have the potential to become integrated

Biomechanical impact of the porous-fibrous tissue behaviour in the temporomandibular joint movements. An in silico approach.

The movement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a function of its complex geometry and its interaction with the surrounding soft tissues. Owing to an increase in the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), many computational studies have attempted to characterize its biomechanical behaviour in the last 2 decades. However, most such studies are based on a single computational model that markedly simplifies the complex geometry and mechanical properties of the TMJ's soft tissues. The present study aims to computationally evaluate in a wider sample the importance of consideri

Pathomorphism of spiral tibial fractures in computed tomography imaging.

BACKGROUND: Spiral fractures of the tibia are virtually homogeneous with regard to their pathomorphism. The differences that are seen concern the level of fracture of the fibula, and, to a lesser extent, the level of fracture of the tibia, the length of fracture cleft, and limb shortening following the trauma. While conventional radiographs provide sufficient information about the pathomorphism of fractures, computed tomography can be useful in demonstrating the spatial arrangement of bone fragments and topography of soft tissues surrounding the fracture site. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Multiple c

Artificial Neural Networks for Bioimage Analysis.

Quantitative optical microscopy has grown to become an accepted methodology in biology and biomedical research labs. This technique has enabled new biological discoveries by relying on the computational analysis of microscopy datasets to provide a detailed look at the complex behavior and interactions of individual cells and molecules. However, as modern microscopy techniques evolve, the resulting datasets increase in both size and complexity, which has led to difficulties in scaling up with traditional analytical methods. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)

Precise integration, derivation and prediction of experimentally obtained functional maps via the computation of self-organization model.

An ideal scientific theory should accurately compute the real-world data, and seamlessly integrate, derive and predict the experimental outcomes with a generalized simulation framework. However, in neuroscience - particularly in studying functional maps of the visual cortex - a significant gap persists due to individual diversity: each animal exhibits a unique map pattern, complicating the development of a universal computational model. In this study, we demonstrate that a Kohonen self-organizing model (SOM) bridges this gap through its intrinsic determinacy. Early-stage, coarse functional map

Dynamic estimation of soft tissue stiffness for use in modeling socket, orthosis or exoskeleton interfaces with lower limb segments.

Modeling the interface between the lower limb segments and a socket, orthosis or exoskeleton is crucial to the design, control, and assessment of such devices. The present study aimed to estimate translational and rotational soft tissue stiffness at the thigh and shank during daily living activities performed by six subjects. Smooth orthogonal decomposition (SOD) was used on skin marker trajectories and fluoroscopy-based knee joint kinematics to compute stiffness coefficients during squatting, sitting and rising from a chair, level walking, and stair descending. On average, for all subjects an
