Anomalous extensor tendons to the long finger: a cadaveric study of incidence.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and anatomic insertion sites of extensor medii proprius and extensor indicis medii communis tendons to the long finger in cadaveric dissection and to describe the insertion of the extensor medii proprius. METHODS: Thirty randomly selected adult cadavers, 44 upper extremities, were examined for the presence or absence of an anomalous extensor tendon to the long finger. If present, tendon origin and insertion sites were documented, and the width of the tendon was evaluated. RESULTS: The extensor medii proprius was observed in 4 of 44 extremities, an incidence…

Examination of the accessory tendons of extensor hallucis longus muscle in fetuses.

There are various data about the incidence of accessory tendons (AT) of extensor hallucis longus (EHL) muscle; however, their function is unknown. This study aimed to determine the incidence and morphometric features of the AT of EHL muscle in fetuses in order to provide more information to discuss its possible function. Forty-five fetuses (26 female and 19 male) were used in this study. Fetuses were grouped as Group A (16-21 weeks), Group B (22-27 weeks), and Group C (28-34 weeks) according to their age. In 23 (51%) out of 45 fetuses, there were AT. These were bilateral in 15 fetuses (65%) an…

Sonographic evaluation of the tendons in familial Mediterranean fever and Behçet's disease.

OBJECTIVES: There have been some studies on the burden of certain rheumatological disorders on the tendons; however, patients with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and Behçet's disease (BD) have not, up to now, been studied in this regard in the literature. Thus, this current study centers on ensuing changes in the tendons of these patients. METHODS: The study comprised 32 patients with FMF (13 male, 19 female), 31 with BD (18 male, 13 female) and 35 control subjects (17 male, 18 female). Sonographical evaluations were performed from the triceps, quadriceps and Achilles tendons on the non-d…

Three-dimensional volume rendering of the tendons of the ankle and foot.

Three-dimensional (3D) rendering is the process of creating two-dimensional (2D) images that convey the 3D relationships of an object or objects. In the past 10 years, the use of volume-rendering (VR) images has become a commonly used method of 3D display. The improved data sets that result from spiral and multidetector computed tomography, improved software, and more powerful workstations significantly improve radiologists' ability to create these images. The process by which these images are obtained is described. It is possible to simultaneously demonstrate the tendons and bones of the ankl…

Simultaneous bilateral rupture of quadriceps tendons: analysis of risk factors and associations.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture is an uncommon injury that is frequently misdiagnosed. It has been associated with multiple medical conditions including renal disease, rheumatologic disorders, and endocrine disorders. METHODS: All reported cases of simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture were identified using MEDLINE. Each case was reviewed for information regarding the injury, and this information was analyzed. RESULTS: There were 66 cases of simultaneous bilateral quadriceps tendon rupture reported in the English-language literature. This review presen

Double tendons at the distal attachment of the extensor hallucis longus muscle.

The distal attachments of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) tendons in 47 amputated legs and in eight cadavers were examined. The EHL had two tendons in 34 of the amputated legs and bilaterally in five cadavers. The lateral tendon was inserted to the middle of the dorsal aspect of the base of the distal phalanx of the hallux and the medial tendon to the medial side of the insertion of the lateral tendon. The length and thickness of these two tendons were measured and compared in order to obtain data for using these tendons in tendon repair and hallux varus corrections by autogenous tendon tra…

Treadmill exercise-induced tendon hypertrophy: assessment of tendons with different mechanical functions.

The equine superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) functions as an energy store during high-speed gaits reducing the energetic cost of locomotion. To enable the SDFT to function effectively, the appropriate mechanical properties are essential. We tested the hypothesis that the SDFT does not undergo gross hypertrophy in response to high-intensity exercise whereas tendons not involved in energy storage undergo adaptive hypertrophy. Two groups (n = 6) of Thoroughbred fillies were trained at high-intensity on a high-speed equine treadmill for 5 months (short-term study) or 18 months (long-term st…

[Histologic characteristics of the tendons after lengthening of hypoplastic fingers in children].

A histologic study of the tendons of hypoplastic fingers before and after the restoration of their length by the method of distraction has been performed in 37 children aged 1 to 14 years. It has been established that in congenital defects of development of the hand the tendons of the hypoplastic fingers have an organotypical structure differing only in thinning of the facieles of ascending order. In the process of distraction of the rudiments of the hypoplastic fingers there is lengthening of the tendons with violation of the specialized structures. However, these changes are temporary and re…

A modification of the Kleinert splint for mobilisation of digital flexor tendons.

A modification of the Kleinert dynamic splint is described, whereby the rubber band is looped around the hand, rather than attached to the volar aspect of the wrist or forearm. This alters the direction of traction so that the interphalangeal joints are more effectively mobilised.

[Ruptures of the tendons of the extensor system of the knee joint].

Ruptures of the quadriceps and patellar tendon are comparatively rare lesions. From the number of cases from 1973 till 1983 17 ruptures of the femoral extensor tendon and 8 ruptures of the patellar tendon were controlled diagnostically, therapeutically and in view of their long-term results. Causally in the group of quadriceps tendons 13 spontaneous ruptures were facing 4 traumatically caused ruptures. In case of traumatic ruptures 3 of them were adolescents after extreme traumatic violence by rapid traumata. Degeneratively conditioned subcutaneous quadriceps tendon ruptures we only found in c…

The strain on sutured Achilles tendons in walking cast. An EMG analysis.

To evaluate the strain on a sutured Achilles tendon during walking in a short leg cast the EMG activity of the triceps surae muscles was studied. The regression line of the EMG/torque relationship of the triceps surae in the noninjured leg was investigated during isometric contractions with the foot in the same plantarflexed position as the injured foot immobilized in plaster cast. A linear relationship was found between EMG activity (EMG signals converted to rectified mean square values) and torque, measured with Cybex II. The torque provided by the triceps surae of the injured leg was calcul

[Treatment of fresh and old ruptures of the extensor tendons (author's transl)].

Knowledge of topographical anatomy and physiological interplay of several structures is considered essential for regaining the normal function of the extensor apparatus of the finger after an acute or an old injury. For better comprehension of the extensor apparatus and because of its anatomical and functional complexity, two types of structural systems are described, namely, the tendinous and the retinacular system. Aetiological aspects and the pathophysiological mechanisms of deformities such as the "swan-neck deformity, boutonnière deformity and mallet finger" are also described and possibi

Spontaneous recurrent ulnar dislocation of the long extensor tendons of the fingers.

Ulnar dislocation of the long extensor tendons of one or more fingers occurred in five elderly women. There was no history of trauma or any of the stigmata of rheumatoid arthritis. In all fingers there was loss of active extension in the metacarpophalangeal joints following flexion. It is postulated that this is a definite clinical entity occurring in the elderly associated with excessive joint laxity.

Collagenolysis of rat tail tendons by crude corneal collagenase and clostridiopeptidase A.

An experimental apparatus, which uses freshly collected, nondenatured rat tail tendons as substrate against crude corneal collagenase from alkali-burned rabbit corneas and clostridiopeptidase A, is introduced. The apparatus makes it possible to compare the collagenolytic activity of the two enzymes directly on intact connective tissue similar to intact corneal tissue. It was found that the two enzymes were able to reduce the tensile strength of rat tail tendons to less than 100 g in less than 5 h. The two enzymes attacked the tendons in structurally the same manner, estimated from a statistica…
