Curcumin is known as a biologically active compound and a possible antimicrobial agent. Here, we combine it with TiO2 and ZnO semiconductors, known for their photocatalytic properties, with an eye towards synergistic photo-harvesting and/or antimicrobial effects. We deposit different nanoscale multi-layer structures of curcumin, TiO2 and ZnO, by combining the solution-based spin-coating (S-C) technique and the gas-phase atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) thin-film techniques. As one of the highlights, we demonstrate for these multi-layer structures a red-shift i

Mastering mechanical properties of polymers at nanometer scale is highly demanded yet remains challenging. Pioneering advances determined Young's modulus in ultrathin polymer films and attained unprecedented results including rubbery stiffening. However, many viscoelastic properties such as dynamic mechanical behavior of freestanding nanoconfined polymer films are still unknown. Here we demonstrate striking changes of stiffness and the ratio between elastic and viscous responses in thin PDMS films, using a microvibrational system which enables direct measurements of dynamic stress-strain relat

Description of the clinical case of the patient with narrowing and deformation of the dentition of the upper and lower jaw and crowded teeth in the frontal part of the lower jaw in combination with a thin gingival biotype. The combined use of diagnostic methods: colorimetric probe, ultrasonic scanning and cone-beam computed tomography, followed by computer 3D-modeling of the treatment plan made it possible to competently plan and implement orthodontic treatment of the patient without complications from periodontal tissues. Combined application of colorimetric probe, ultrasonic and cone-beam co

Many parameters affect tear film thickness and fluorescent intensity distributions over time; exact values or ranges for some are not well known. We conduct parameter estimation by fitting to fluorescent intensity data recorded from normal subjects' tear films. The fitting is done with thin film fluid dynamics models that are nonlinear partial differential equation models for the thickness, osmolarity and fluorescein concentration of the tear film for circular (spot) or linear (streak) tear film breakup. The corresponding fluorescent intensity is computed from the tear film thickness and fluor

OBJECTIVE: While Alzheimer's disease is associated with inner retina thinning measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), our previous cross-sectional study suggested outer retina thinning in frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) patients compared to controls without neurodegenerative disease; we sought to evaluate longitudinal changes of this potential biomarker.
METHODS: SD-OCT retinal layer thicknesses were measured at baseline and after 1-2 years. Clinical criteria, genetic analysis, and a cerebrospinal fluid biomarker (total tau: β-amyloid) to exclude likely underlying

BACKGROUND: Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and internal macular layer thinning have been demonstrated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with optical coherence tomography (OCT) studies. The purpose of this study is to compare the pRNFL thickness and overall retinal thickness (RT) in AD patients with non-AD patients, using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and determine the sectors most characteristically affected in AD.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to determine the pRNFL and overall macular RT thicknesses in AD and non-AD patients, attending a t

Pharmaceutical thin films are versatile drug-delivery platforms i.e. allowing transdermal, oral, sublingual and buccal administration. However, dissolution testing of thin films is challenging since the commonly used dissolution tests for conventional dosage forms correspond rather poorly to the physiological conditions at the site of administration. Here we introduce a traditional optical reflection method for monitoring the dissolution behavior of thin polymeric films. The substances, e.g. drug molecules, released from the film generate an increase in the refractive index in the liquid mediu

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether fibromyalgia induces axonal damage in the optic nerve that can be detected using optical coherence tomography (OCT), as the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is atrophied in patients with fibromyalgia compared with controls.
METHODS: Fibromyalgia patients (n = 116) and age-matched healthy controls (n = 144) were included in this observational and prospective cohort study. All subjects underwent visual acuity measurement and structural analysis of the RNFL using two OCT devices (Cirrus and Spectralis). Fibromyalgia patients were evaluated according to Giesecke'

Results of 61 cases of various glomerulopathies with thin glomerular basement membranes are presented. The largest group of 31 cases consisted of mesangial glomerulonephritis. The second largest group consisted of 19 patients with small glomerular lesions described as non-specific. This group stood out in both clinical presentations and in the higher diversity of lesions within the lamina densa of the basement membrane. The results of measurements of the lamina densa in various glomerulopathies were compared to those obtained in control groups consisting of thin basement membrane syndrome and

BACKGROUND: The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) is a key center of affect regulation and processing, fundamental aspects of emotional competence which are disrupted in mood disorders. Structural alterations of VMPFC have consistently been observed in adult major depression and are associated with depression severity, yet it is unknown whether young children with depression demonstrate similar abnormalities. We investigated cortical thickness differences in the VMPFC of children with a history of preschool-onset depression (PO-MDD).
METHODS: Participants in a longitudinal study of PO-MD

BACKGROUND: The need for improved microsurgical reconstructive techniques is ongoing given the "ideal" free flap still does not exist. When reconstruction requires a thin flap, options have remained limited and flaps with minimal donor site morbidity that do not require secondary de-bulking have been elusive thus far. The importance of a thin and supple flap cannot be understated when dealing with challenging cases such as the dorsum of the hand or foot. This also applies to other areas such as the head and neck and over the large joints of the knee and elbow. The authors propose a previously

Fragmentation of thin layers of materials is mediated by a network of cracks on its surface. It is commonly seen in dehydrated paintings or asphalt pavements and even in graphene or other two-dimensional materials, but is also observed in the characteristic polygonal pattern on a crocodile's head. Here, we build a simple mechanical model of a thin film and investigate the generation and development of fragmentation patterns as the material is exposed to various modes of deformation. We find that the characteristic size of fragmentation, defined by the mean diameter of polygons, is strictly gov
