Comparison between periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography for the diagnosis of anterior maxillary trauma in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Under-estimating the damage caused by trauma to the dental structures may delay treatment. Timely and accurate diagnosis remains challenging in clinical practice. Radiography is an important modality for the diagnosis of traumatic injuries. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography for the diagnosis of trauma to the anterior maxillary dentoalveolar region in children and adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Images of patients who underwent both periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography simultaneo

A New Experimental Technique for Complete Extraction of Mandibular First Molar Teeth in Rats.

Intact extraction of the mandibular first molar tooth is an interesting model for studies of alveolar bone healing. The aim of this study was to describe a new experimental technique for extraction of rat mandibular first molar teeth with crown and all 4 roots intact using controlled forces applied to the teeth. One hundred and twenty female Sprague-Dawley rats were used from a center for experimental animal research. Animals underwent general anesthesia and were then placed in a special dental unit (designed by Moghadam) for the extraction of rat teeth. After syndesmotomy, luxation of the too

Root resorption of a partially erupted tooth: a case report.

This article reports a case of a maxillary second premolar which on presentation was partially erupted, and which resisted attempts at orthodontic extrusion. The crown of the tooth was eventually restored using an adhesive composite onlay technique. The patient subsequently complained of pain and the root of the tooth showed radiographic evidence of resorption. The root of the extracted tooth had a vital pulp but massive external resorption was evident, with repair with bone-like material.

Stress intensity factor of a cracked molar restored with different materials and designs: A 3D-FEA.

OBJECTIVE: This work used 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze and directly compare the stress intensity factor (SIF) and stress distribution at the crack tip of identical cracked tooth models restored with different materials and crown parameters. METHODS: A 3D model of the cracked tooth was generated. Then, we applied 25 restorative models, including three parameters (shoulder height, width, and degree of polymerization), five restorative materials (GC, IPS, LU, ZC, VE), and two combinations of types of cement (RMGIC and GIC). An occlusal load of 800N was applied to the spherical par

Ectodermal dysplasia with associated double tooth.

The case describes a double molar tooth in a seven-year-old girl who has ectodermal dysplasia. The most characteristic dental findings in ectodermal dysplasia are hypodontia and conically shaped crowns. In our case a double tooth was also present in the primary molar region, in addition to these characteristic findings.

Incidental observation of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption after seven years.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PIER) can be described by the presence of coronal radiolucency in a unerupted tooth. Upon eruption, the resorbed dentine might leave the occlusal layer of enamel unsupported and susceptible to fracture, potentially exposing the pulp chamber and root canals to the oral flora. With current case studies showing unfavourable endodontic and restorative consequences of PIER lesions when left untreated, this case report presents an unchanged lesion, 7 years following initial identification.

Delayed formation of a lower second premolar.

Delayed odontogenesis of a lower second premolar is presented in a case treated without extraction and focuses on the 7-year follow-up of the delayed tooth bud. The follow-up was initiated when the crown formation was diagnosed and was finished when the tooth erupted completely into the orthodontically provided space, which enabled the orthodontic leveling and alignment of the delayed premolar. The long follow-up indicates that delayed tooth buds may develop completely and normally.

Clinical evaluation of forceps eruption: reestablishing biologic width and restoring no restorable teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Complicated crown- root fractures, extended caries and iatrogenic destruction often result in insufficient sound tooth structures and compromise the biologic width. Two common options for re-establishing flap with osseous surgery. Although some advantages are related to these two options, but coronal movement of gingival and alveolar bone in orthodontic extrusion, esthetic problem and inconsistent topography between the involved tooth and the adjacent teeth following osseous surgery are the involved tooth and the adjacent teeth following osseous surgery are the major disadvantage

Fracture load of zirconia crowns based on preparation and cement type.

Limited research has been published evaluating the failure of zirconia crowns with less retentive tooth preparations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of axial wall height (AWH) and cement type on the fracture load of cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns. Standardized crown preparations with an AWH of 0, 2, or 4 mm (n = 10) were made in 90 extracted human maxillary third molars. The preparations were scanned, and crown restorations were designed. Cubic phase-containing zirconia crowns were milled and cemented with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement, a self-adhesive res

Marsupialization of Dentigerous Cysts Followed by Enucleation and Extraction of Deeply Impacted Third Molars: A Report of Two Cases.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that involves the crown or a portion of the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Mandibular third molars are the most commonly implicated teeth in this type of cyst. DC can be asymptomatic and detected by an ordinary radiographic examination. Two massive DC with deeply impacted third molars were treated by marsupialization followed by surgical extraction and enucleation of the residual lining. In both cases, sensation on the lower lip and chin remained normal, and complete bone healing was achieved. Decompression by simple marsupi

Clinical crown lengthening in the esthetic zone.

Periodontal surgical procedures consisting of gingival flaps and osseous recontouring are indicated for crown lengthening of several contiguous teeth in the esthetic zone; both in cases where restorations are required and in cases where no restorations are planned, such as in patients with excessive gingival display due to altered passive eruption. Forced tooth eruption via orthodontic extrusion is the technique of choice when clinical crown lengthening is necessary on isolated teeth in the esthetic zone.

[Research progress on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tooth eruption].

Tooth eruption is a series of complicated physiological processes occurring once the crown is formed completely, as well as when the tooth moves toward the occasion plane. As such, the tooth moves through the alveolar bone and the oral mucosa until it finally reaches its functional position. Most studies indicate that the process of tooth eruption involves the alveolar bone, dental follicles, osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and multiple cytokines. Dental follicles regulate both resorption and formation of the alveolar bone, which is required for tooth eruption. Furthermore, root formation with perio

Surgical extrusion of a crown-root fractured immature permanent incisor: 36 month follow-up.

Crown-root fracture is defined as a fracture involving enamel, dentin and pulp and can be classified as either complicated or uncomplicated. The tooth with crown-root fracture presents a lot of problems during coronal restorations and extraction was formerly used in many cases. But loss of a permanent incisor in a young patient may create severe emotional problems and alternative treatment approaches must be considered. This report presents the successful results of a surgical extrusion of a complicated crown-root fractured, immature permanent incisor in a 9-year-old boy. Examination 36 months

Flapless Decoronation: A Minimally Invasive Approach.

Traumatic injuries to the permanent dentition are most common in children. In severe dentoalveolar injuries, especially avulsion and intrusion, dentoalveolar ankylosis is a common complication, leading to adverse effects on the developing alveolar bone and interfering with the eruption of the adjacent teeth. The decoronation procedure was suggested in 1984 to reduce these side effects related to ankylosis. The objective of the current publication is to describe a minimally invasive, flapless decoronation procedure aimed to minimize and simplify the surgical procedure of decoronation, and ease

Assessment of Interleukin-6 Levels and Lactobacillus casei Counts in Pediatric Stainless Steel and Zirconia Crowns: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric dental crowns play an integral role as they maintain the form and function and prolong the life of the affected tooth. However, placing a crown in the oral cavity creates a new niche for the adhesion of microorganisms that can lead to plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, and the development of secondary caries, which in the long term might determine the clinical success of the restored tooth. The present study allowed us to assess the changes caused by the full coverage restorations at a clinical, immunological, and microbiological level using enzyme-linked immunos
