Neuroendocrine tumours of the urinary bladder: recent advances.

Small cell carcinoma is the most frequently encountered neuroendocrine tumour (NET) of the urinary bladder, and it may present as either pure or in combination with urothelial carcinoma or other histological subtypes. Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is increasingly recognized in this location, but it is not yet fully characterized. Well-differentiated NET and paraganglioma of the bladder are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms. Advances in the molecular characterization of these tumours have enhanced our understanding of their biology and can provide better classification and more accurate risk …

[mpMRI of the Urinary Bladder: Significance and Clinical Use].

The diagnosis and staging of bladder cancer is challenging. TUR-B and CT diagnostics bear limitations in detecting muscle invasion and perivesical fat invasion. Thus, second TUR-B is required to ensure more reliable pathological staging. The mpMRI of the urinary bladder is a new diagnostic tool in evaluation of tumor muscle invasion. Numerous retrospective and prospective studies indicate high diagnostic accuracy of the mpMRI in this setting. Current meta-analyses show sensitivities of up to 90% with a high specificity of >85%. The "Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System" (VI-RADS) is a sta…

The biology of congenital urinary bladder outflow obstruction.

Congenital urinary bladder outflow obstruction (BOO) is a major cause of kidney failure in children. Sometimes, it is caused by anatomical obstruction of the urethra. In other cases, functional failure of voiding occurs without anatomical obstruction. Bladder development is driven by genes expressed in smooth muscle, neural and urothelial cell lineages. Variants in the coding regions of such genes cause a subset of BOO. In other cases, such as posterior urethral valves (PUV), noncoding variants may influence susceptibility. By modelling BOO in mutant mice, combined with viral vector mediated g…

Updates on Urinary Bladder Tumors With Neuroendocrine Features.

The most common neuroendocrine tumor in the urinary bladder is small cell carcinoma, which can be pure or mixed with components of urothelial or other histologic subtypes. Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the bladder is rare and remains ill-defined but is increasingly recognized. Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor and paraganglioma can arise in the bladder but are very rare in this location. Recent advances in molecular characterization allowed for better classification and may offer improved stratification of these tumors.

Findings of an Extraluminal Leiomyosarcoma of the Urinary Bladder in a Dog.

A 9 yr old male miniature poodle presented with acute diarrhea, vomiting, and a distended abdomen. A large and firm mass was palpated in the caudal abdomen. Radiography showed a large soft-tissue mass in the mid ventral abdomen. The mass was mildly contrast-enhancing and in contact with the right cranial aspect of the bladder on computed tomography. The mass was heterogeneous with minimal blood flow on Doppler examination. Surgery confirmed its origin of the urinary bladder, and it was diagnosed leiomyosarcoma on pathology. This is the first report of extraluminal leiomyosarcoma of the bladder…
