Optic Neuritis As the Initial Presentation of Syphilis.

Syphilis is transmitted via sexual contact and spreads through the lymphatic and hematologic systems. Ocular syphilis is an uncommon yet serious manifestation of syphilis that can cause significant vision impairment. This report presents a case of ocular syphilis in a 41-year-old otherwise healthy woman who presented with left-sided blurry vision and ocular discomfort. Examination confirmed decreased visual acuity and optic disc swelling in the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested optic neuritis. After ruling out other causes of optic neuritis and considering the presentatio

Vision profile of the athletes of the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

BACKGROUND: Special Olympics were organized in 1968 by Eunice Shriver as a program of physical fitness for individuals with mental handicaps. Numerous epidemiologic studies report an increase in visual problems in this population. METHODS: A comprehensive vision screening was conducted at the 1995 Special Olympic World Summer Games to identify the prevalence of visual anomalies in this select group. Testing included visual acuity, refractive error, ocular motor skills, stereopsis, color vision, contrast sensitivity, eye-hand coordination, eye-foot coordination, and an ocular health evaluation

Impact of myopia and myopia control interventions on binocular vision: A narrative review.

Myopia is the fastest-growing, chronic eye condition that covers 30% of the population worldwide and is estimated to be around 50% of the global population (5 billion people) by 2050. Since there is an association between myopia onset and binocular vision disorder, this narrative review aims to establish a relation between the accommodative demand and binocular functions among patients using myopia control strategies. The identified articles follow different methodologies and various myopia control interventions. The literature search includes keywords using Boolean operators on the PubMed and

Parasympathetic and sympathetic control of emmetropization in chick.

Emmetropization can be altered by temporal visual stimulation and the spectral properties of the visual environment. The goal of the current experiment is to test the hypothesis that there is an interaction between these properties and autonomic innervation. For that purpose, selective lesions of the autonomic nervous system were performed in chickens followed by temporal stimulation. Parasympathetic lesioning involved transection of both the ciliary ganglion and the pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG_CGX; n = 38), while sympathetic lesioning involved transection of the superior cervical ganglion (

Modelling the refractive and imaging impact of multi-zone lenses utilised for myopia control in children's eyes.

PURPOSE: To develop an optical model of a child's eye to reveal the impact of target distance and accommodative behaviour on retinal image quality when fitted with multi-zone lenses. METHODS: Pupil size, aberration levels and accommodative lag were adjusted for models viewing stimuli at 400, 100, 33 and 20 cm. Distributions of defocus across the pupil and simulated retinal images were obtained. An equivalent 16-point letter was imaged at near viewing distances, while a 0.00 logMAR (6/6) letter was imaged at 400 cm. Multi-zone lenses included those clinically utilised for myopia control (e.g.,

Refractive changes with post-rotatory nystagmus in healthy individuals.

PURPOSE: Post-rotatory nystagmus has been used to detect autism spectrum disorders in clinical settings. Although previous studies have focused on eye movements, they did not evaluate the change in ocular refraction during post-rotatory nystagmus. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in ocular refraction during post-rotatory nystagmus in healthy individuals. METHODS: A total of 34 healthy volunteers (mean age ± standard deviation, 20.9 ± 0.6 years) participated in this study. The ocular refraction during post-rotatory nystagmus was measured using MR-6000 (Tomey Inc.) on quick mode with a

Optical tolerance to rotation of trifocal toric intraocular lenses as a function of the cylinder power.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to assess the impact of 5- and 10-degree rotations in the optical quality of a trifocal toric intraocular lens with different amounts of cylinder. METHODS: Two Physiol Toric intraocular lenses with 1.5 and 3.0 D of cylinder were analysed in three different positions: centred, 5 and 10 degrees rotated. The optical quality of the intraocular lenses was evaluated with the PMTF optical bench through specific perpendicular targets. The analysis was performed by the through-focus modulation transfer function curves and the modulation transfer function corresponding to distan

The effects of moderate doses of ethanol on heterophoria and other aspects of binocular vision.

It has been known for many years that ethanol has an impairing effect on binocular vision and the co-ordination of the ocular motor balance. Various parameters were compared before and after imbibition of a moderate dosage of ethanol. The results show an increase in esophoria (or decrease in exophoria) at 6 m, with a reduction in the negative fusional ability. They also show an increase in exophoria (or decrease in esophoria) at near, with a decrease in both the AC/A ratio and near point of convergence. There was no significant effect on the amplitude of accommodation. This study raises the po

Molecular nature of ocular surface barrier function, diseases that affect it, and its relevance for ocular drug delivery.

The structural and functional integrity of the ocular surface, a continuous epithelial structure comprised of the cornea, the conjunctiva, and the ductal surface of the lacrimal as well as meibomian glands, is crucial for proper vision. The ocular surface barrier function (OSBF), sum of the different types of protective mechanisms that exist at the ocular surface, is essential to protect the rest of the eye from vision-threatening physical, chemical, and biological insults. OSBF helps maintain the immune privileged nature of the cornea and the aqueous humor by preventing entry of infectious ag

Can chronic visual discomfort measures accurately predict acute symptoms?

PURPOSE: Several surveys exist to determine the severity and frequency of chronic symptoms related to visual discomfort. To our knowledge, there are no studies that investigate the potential of chronic visual discomfort ratings to predict acute discomfort symptoms that are experienced after tests of accommodation and vergence. We examined the ability of two measures of chronic visual discomfort symptoms to predict acute symptoms experienced. METHODS: The Conlon et al. and the convergence insufficiency symptom surveys were administered to 40 participants to assess chronic visual discomfort sym

OCULAR ANATOMY AND PATHOLOGY IN LUMHOLTZ'S TREE-KANGAROO (DENDROLAGUS LUMHOLTZI).

Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) is one of two species of tree-kangaroos found in Queensland, Australia. There is little information about ocular anatomy and pathology in any species of tree-kangaroo, and there are claims of blindness from unknown causes in free-ranging Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos. This study investigated ocular anatomy and pathology in 80 individuals, using examination of 31 live animals and histopathologic examination of eyes from 49 carcasses. Tree-kangaroos were found to have a typical vertebrate eye with immuno-histochemical evidence for dichromatic color vi

OCULAR SYPHILIS IN A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT.

We present a case of ocular syphilis after a renal transplantation involving progressive vision loss without clinically identifiable ocular disease. Electroretinography showed signs of ischemia, especially in the internal retina. A serological test was positive for syphilis. Lumbar puncture revealed lymphocytic meningitis and a positive serologic test for syphilis in the cerebrospinal fluid. The patient was treated with penicillin, and had a quick vision improvement. In the case of transplant recipients, clinicians should always consider the diagnosis of ocular syphilis in cases with unexplain

Targeted reaching with monocular depth information and haptic feedback: Comparing between monocular patients and normally sighted observers.

Monocular blindness impairs visual depth perception, yet patients seldom report difficulties in targeted actions like reaching, walking, or driving. We hypothesized that by utilizing monocular depth information and calibrating actions with haptic feedback, monocular patients can perceive egocentric distance and perform targeted actions. We compared targeted reaching in monocular patients, monocular-viewing, and binocular-viewing normal controls. Sixty observers reached either a far or a near target, calibrating reaches to the near target with accurate or false feedback while leaving reaches to
