[A boy with a white striped knee on a radiograph].

A 10-year-old boy presented at the radiology department with pain in the right knee. Radiographs of the knee revealed dens metaphyseal bands and subchondral epiphyseal sclerosis as a result of periodic bisphosphonate administration for the treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease three years ago.

UHPLC quantification of sotolon in white wine.

Sotolon (4,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-one) is a volatile compound involved in the atypical aging of dry white wine, causing an irreversible defect when it exceeds 7-8 μg L(-1), and it might be adopted as a chemical marker of oxidative aging. An easier and sensitive ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography method for its determination in white wine is reported. The sample preparation is based on the liquid/liquid extraction by dichloromethane and the purification by solid phase extraction of the redissolved dry sample. This method showed good linearity and intermediate repeatabilit…

Plateau iris in Whites versus Asians.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of plateau iris diagnosed by ultrasound biomicroscopy after laser peripheral iridotomy in Whites as compared to Asians in a U.S. clinic setting. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study of narrow angle patients (n=55) who underwent laser peripheral iridotomy. Ultrasound biomicroscopy was performed in 4 quadrants of only one eye of each patient 4~6 weeks before and after surgery. The images were randomized and interpreted qualitatively by a single observer. Plateau iris was diagnosed in eyes with persistent appositional angles after laser periphe…

Egg white as a blood coagulation surrogate.

Egg white, a protein-containing solution, is characterized as a blood coagulation surrogate for the acoustical and thermal evaluation of therapeutic ultrasound, especially high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) devices. Physical properties, including coagulation temperature, frequency dependent attenuation, sound speed, viscosity, and thermal properties, were measured as a function of temperature (20-95 degrees C). Thermal coagulation and attenuation (5-12 and 1 MHz) of cow blood, pig blood, and human blood also were assessed and compared with egg white. For a 30 s thermal exposure, both egg…

Case report: a black and white twin.

Albinism is an autosomal recessive disorder that is caused by a defective synthesis of melanin, resulting in a generalized reduction of pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes, and leading to an increased risk of skin cancer and vision problems. We report a case of a 22-year-old primigravida of Negroid origin who delivered dichorial diamniotic twins: two daughters were born with a totally different appearance. The first child had a light brown skin, black curly hair and brown eyes, whereas the second had a striking white skin, red-blond curly hair and blue eyes. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) a…

Microvascular changes in the white mater in dementia.

Our studies of the brain microvascular system have focused on some aspects not commonly studied by other research groups because we use some … lary loss. Lipid emboli might also be used to create an animal model of vascular dementia. The deep white matter is vulnerable to chronic hypoperfusion because the blood vessels supplying this region arise from the border-zone and have the longest course of all vessels penetrating the cerebrum. In cases with leukoaraiosis (LA), we found periventricular …

[Bland-White-Garland syndrome in an adult].

We report about a 47-year-old woman, who presented with a history of cardiac failure. Echocardiography showed an impaired left ventricular function, clinically significant mitral regurgitation and pulmonary hypertension. Diagnosis of a Bland- White-Garland syndrome was made by coronary angiography. Subsequent therapy consisted of ligation of the anomalus origin of the left coronary artery, implantation of a Mammaria interna graft to the left coronary artery and replacement of the mitral valve by a mechanical prosthesis. One year after operation, left ventricular function was still impaired. At…

[A white lesion of the oral mucosa: leukoplakia?].

In three patients, two men aged 50 and 44 years and a woman aged 56 years, an apparently identical white lesion of the oral mucosa was found. The first patient appeared to have an irritation due to vigorous toothbrushing, which disappeared after reducing the brushing frequency and using a soft brush, the second patient had a lichen planus, for which a wait and see policy was adopted, and the third patient had verrucous hyperplasia with dysplasia which was treated by CO2-laser evaporation. Oral leukoplakia occurs frequently together with other white lesions. Leukoplakia is a diagnosis by exclus…

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in a white woman.

A 24 year old white woman presented with sudden onset of flaccid quadriparesis and hypokalaemia. She was later found to be thyrotoxic. Paralysis resolved with potassium supplements, and after initiation of antithyroid medication she had no further episodes of hypokalaemic paralysis. To the best of the authors' knowledge, and after a Medline search, thyrotoxic periodic paralysis has not been described previously in a white woman.

White-coat effect in normotension and hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: The difference between clinic and daytime ambulatory blood pressure is referred to as the white-coat effect. In this study, we investigated (i) the magnitude of the white-coat effect in subjects with different daytime ambulatory blood pressure levels, and (ii) the association of the white-coat effect with left ventricular mass. METHODS: A total of 1581 subjects underwent clinic blood pressure readings, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and left ventricular echocardiographic assessment. Their mean daytime systolic blood pressure varied from 88.0 to 208.9 mmHg and their mean…

Evaluation of the white-coat effect in cats.

The diagnosis and management of systemic hypertension in cats requires a reliable method for measurement of systemic arterial blood pressure (BP) in clinical patients. Unfortunately, the setting of a clinical practice and the act of measuring BP might raise BP and heart rate (HR), an effect referred to as the white-coat effect in human patients. The purpose of the present study was to determine if a white-coat effect was experienced by cats. Radiotelemetric implants were used to measure BP and HR in 13 conscious cats in a research colony while undisturbed in their cages and while subjected to …

Alcohol and white matter development--a review.

This is a review of the literature on the effects of alcohol on white matter development. For many years, human and animal studies have reported the vulnerability of developing white matter to the effects of alcohol. However, until recently, studies on alcohol and white matter were limited by existing technology. New technology documenting the presence of neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels on glial cells now provides a new focus for research on alcohol and white matter development. New research using new technology should enlarge our knowledge of the role of glial cells in brain damag…

Syndactylism and brachygnathia in a white-tailed deer.

A white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) fawn was presented to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study for examination of brachygnathia and syndactylous front feet. The hoof keratin of digits 3 and 4 was completely fused and typical sole integument covered the palmar surface between the primary digits. Based on a radiographic examination, there was fusion of the epiphyses of the first phalanges of digits 3 and 4 in both feet. In the right foot the proximal metaphyses of the first phalanges of digits 3 and 4 were fused.
