Which preoperative factors influence the patient's short-term subjective assessment after rotator cuff repair?

INTRODUCTION: To highlight the preoperative risk factors that influence postoperative patient satisfaction following Rotator Cuff Repair (RCR) and to determine whether this satisfaction was correlated with tendon healing. HYPOTHESIS: Preoperative factors influence patient satisfaction, assessed by SSV (Subjective Shoulder Value) postoperatively, with a correlation with tendon healing. METHODS: With a mean age of 60.6 years (40-72), 102 patients with arthroscopic RCR were included retrospectively. The preoperative SSV score was less than or equal to 50%. There was clinical and radiological fo

Injuries among solid waste collectors in the private versus public sectors.

Solid waste collection is among the occupations with the highest risk for injuries and illnesses. Solid waste collector injuries were characterized in terms of injury risk and employment industry sector (public versus private) using Kentucky workers' compensation first reports of injury and claims data. When compared to 35-44-year-old workers, solid waste collectors who were under 35 years of age were less likely to have a workers' compensation first report of injury or claim that resulted in awarded benefits. The probability that a workers' compensation first report of injury or claim would r…

Occupational rehabilitation services provided by a community workers health centre in Hong Kong: a case study.

BACKGROUND: In Hong Kong, the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO), based on the model of the English Workmen's Compensation Act 1943, establishes a no-fault, non-contributory system for work injuries. It focuses merely on the minimum social expectation in compensating injured workers in monetary terms, but does not place much emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and return to work policies for workers with injury. There is a need to reform an effective and comprehensive occupational rehabilitation system for workers with work injury in Hong Kong. METHODS: This paper presents a case stud

Coordinated teamwork in California industrial rehabilitation.

This article describes a case study of an industrially produced hand injury that exemplifies the coordination and teamwork involved in vocational rehabilitation in the California Workers' Compensation system. This patient required multiple tendon and nerve transplant operations done with microsurgical techniques, hand therapy for functional and sensory retraining, job analysis, vocational evaluation, labor market survey, work-hardening experience, and an on-the-job training program to effect a successful outcome. An overview of the current status of the California Workers' Compensation system …

Expanding the role of nurse practitioners: effects on rural access to care for injured workers.

CONTEXT: A 3-year pilot program to expand the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in the Washington State workers' compensation system was implemented in 2004 (SHB 1691), amid concern about disparities in access to health care for injured workers in rural areas. SHB 1691 authorized NPs to independently perform most functions of an attending physician. PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to (1) describe the contribution by NPs to Washington's workers' compensation provider workforce, (2) evaluate change in provider availability attributable to SHB 1691, and (3) evaluate the effect of SHB 1691 o…

Workplace injuries and the take-up of Social Security disability benefits.

Workplace injuries and illnesses are an important cause of disability. State workers' compensation programs provide almost $60 billion per year in cash and medical-care benefits for those injuries and illnesses. Social Security Disability Insurance (DI) is the largest disability insurance program in the United States, with annual cash payments to disabled workers of $95 billion in 2008. Because injured workers may also receive DI benefits, it is important to understand how those two systems interact to provide benefits. This article uses matched state workers' compensation and Social Security …

Utilization rates of Active Release Techniques® in the workplace: A descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Workplace safety is a necessary and frequent topic of discussion for researchers, employers, and workers. It is estimated that annual losses caused by work-related injuries cost the United States $140 to $145 billion. Specifically, work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) have risen from just over 10% to 50% of the total claims from 1952 to 1996, accounting for more than 345,00 days lost and more than $57 million in WSIB costs in 2015. Novel approaches to managing WMSDs, such as Active Release Techniques®, need to be explored to ensure the ongoing health of workers. OBJECTIVE

Geographic variation in work disability burden: Identifying hotspots, coldspots, and associated sociodemographic factors.

OBJECTIVES: To identify geographic hotspots and coldspots of work disability burden and their associated sociodemographic factors in Australia. METHODS: Using Australian workers' compensation and census data, we calculated weeks of compensated time off work per 1000 labor force, an indicator of work disability burden, at Statistical Area Level 4, the smallest level of labor force data produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Records included all claims with at least 1 day of compensated time off work lodged between 2010 and 2015. Work disability burden was z-transformed by state and t…

[Recognition of a skin disease as an occupational disease according to the current legislation].

Admission of the insurance qualifying occupational skin disease (No. 5101 of Schedule 1 of the Occupational Disease Regulations = BeKV) has as its pre-requisite the availability of the medical evidence. The beginning of the period qualifying for insurance benefit shall be determined retrospectively. A hazardous activity appertains even if only a minor portion of the field of activity is the cause of the disease. Qualifying for insurance benefits requires that this activity shall have been finally given up and that the same or other hazardous activities are avoided in the future. This prognosis

Dupuytren's disease: relation to work and injury.

The present status of adjudication for workers claiming compensation for Dupuytren's disease is inconsistent and, therefore, unfair to both workers and employers. In some Eastern European countries Dupuytren's disease is classified as an industrial disease, whereas in other countries it is considered to have no relation to manual work or hand injury. In jurisdictions that sometimes award compensation, the reasons for acceptance or rejection of a claim vary from case to case and are not necessarily based on our present knowledge of the disease. The purpose of this communication is to highlight

Compensation and recovery from injury.

Workers' compensation laws influence recovery from injury. They affect the "cause" of disease, access to care, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, response to treatment and residual disability. Paradoxically, financial compensation may discourage return to work, the appeal process may increase disability, an open claim may inhibit return to work and recovering patients may be unable to return to work. Physicians may help improve the prospects of returning patients to work by providing care that is medical, caring and independent. It is essential that the treatment of back pain be based on the kn…

Compensability of, and legal issues related to, coccidioidomycosis.

Legal issues that may develop when treating patients with coccidioidomycosis include allegations of medical malpractice, claims for workers' compensation benefits, and civil actions against business owners. In states where the disease is most prevalent, California recognizes cocci diodomycosis as a compensable condition, although Arizona does not. In civil actions, the state courts have not imposed liability on any business or institution for those that claim to have developed cocci diodomycosis on or near the premises of the business.

The Digital Economy and Hybrid Work Call for a Review of Compensation Criteria for Musculoskeletal Disorders.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) pose a significant occupational health challenge in Europe. The digitization of the economy substantially reshaped the nature and organization of work. The proliferation of hybrid working, characterized by a combination of office-based and remote work, has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This review covers hybrid forms of work, their impact on WRMSDs, and the potential implications for WRMSD compensation. Approximately 30-40% of the European workforce could potentially transition to hybrid forms of work. Hybrid work arrangements can res
