BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) have been associated with biochemical factors involved in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine as folate deficiency and the mutation 677T in the N(5),N(10)-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR).
METHODS: A case-control study was performed to detect this mutation in 38 unrelated women with NTD deceased products and 31 mothers without antecedents of NTD offspring. All products were born in Nuevo León (northeastern Mexico) during 1997. Erythrocyte and plasmatic folate levels and the genotype of the 677 polymorphism at the MTHFR locus were

The intrauterine environment is critical for fetal growth and organ development. Evidence from animal models indicates that the developing kidney is vulnerable to suboptimal maternal nutrition and changes in health status. However, evidence from human studies are yet to be synthesised. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to systematically review current research on the relationship between maternal nutrition during pregnancy and offspring kidney structure and function in humans. A search of five databases identified 9501 articles, of which three experimental and seven observational stu

One third of the pregnant Danish women are overweight or obese. Maternal obesity is an independent risk factor for adverse maternal and foetal outcomes including infertility, miscarriage, congenital malformations, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, complicated deliveries, caesarean section, macrosomia and childhood obesity. This article reviews the effect of maternal obesity on obstetric and neonatal outcomes and provides recommendations for management of obesity in pregnancy.

Anemia is prevalent among pregnant adolescents, but few data exist on biochemical indicators of iron status in this group. We hypothesized that among an at-risk population of African-American, pregnant adolescents, the degree of iron depletion and deficiency would be marked, and that iron deficiency anemia would comprise the majority of the observed anemia. To examine this, blood samples were collected from 80 girls (< or =18 y old) attending an inner city maternity clinic, 23 of whom were studied longitudinally in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters depending on contact at the clinic. Sample sizes for

OBJECTIVE: Megaloblastosis (i.e., megaloblastic transformation of erythroid precursor cells in the bone marrow) is the cytomorphological hallmark of megaloblastic anemia resulting from vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. It is characterized by a finely stippled lacy pattern of nuclear chromatin, which is believed to be an expression of deranged cellular DNA synthesis. However, the molecular basis of these cytomorphological aberrations still remains obscure. The current presentation describes the results of our studies on some molecular events associated with the development of megaloblastosis.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age in India are vulnerable to multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Large-scale food fortification of staple foods and condiments offers a cost-effective approach to improving micronutrient intake. However, the impact of large-scale food fortification on the gut microbiome remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine whether quintuply-fortified salt (QFS) alters the gut microbiome of nonpregnant women of reproductive age after 12 mo.
METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, controlled community-based trial was conducted among 998 women (18

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The nutritional quality of a gluten-free diet is debated because of the elimination of grains that are important sources of nutrients. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to perform a nutritional assessment in treated women with celiac disease and ongoing symptoms, and compare dietary intake with a healthy reference group (Norkost 3).
METHODS: Celiac disease patients with biopsy confirmed mucosal healing, but persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, were included from an ongoing clinical trial. Nutritional assessment included anthropometrics, blood samples and dietary in

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide and has been linked to hematologic, neurologic and psychiatric diseases. There are a few studies regarding vitamin B12 deficiency in developing countries in general and in Jordan in particular.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of the present study were to assess the vitamin B12 status of Jordanians at national level and to identify population groups at high risk for vitamin B12 deficiency.
METHODS: Vitamin B12 status was assessed in a national sample of 5,640 subjects aged >8 years. The study involved interviews, laboratory measurements of

Cobalamin (Cbl, B(12)) is an essential micronutrient required to fulfill the enzymatic reactions of cytosolic methylcobalamin-dependent methionine synthase and mitochondrial adenosylcobalamin-dependent methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. Mutations in the MMACHC gene (cblC complementation group) disrupt processing of the upper-axial ligand of newly internalized cobalamins, leading to functional deficiency of the vitamin. Patients with cblC disease present with both hyperhomocysteinemia and methylmalonic acidemia, cognitive dysfunction, and megaloblastic anemia. In the present study we show that cultured

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a clinically significant syndrome characterized by a rapid decline in renal function, affecting over 50% of patients in intensive care units. Ferroptosis, a recently identified form of regulated cell death, is driven by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and has been implicated in AKI pathogenesis. Emerging evidence suggests that lipophagy - a selective autophagic degradation of lipid droplets - potentiates ferroptosis, though the upstream regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood. ESRRA (estrogen related receptor, alpha), a key transcriptional regulator of fat

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is growing evidence that increased blood concentration of total homocysteine (tHcy) may be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study was conducted to evaluate the association of serum tHcy and other biochemical risk factors with AD.
METHODS: This is a case-control study including 41 individuals diagnosed with AD and 46 nondemented controls. Serum levels of all studied biochemical parameters were performed.
RESULTS: Univariate logistic regression showed a significant increase of tHcy (p = 0.008), urea (p = 0.036) and a significant decrease of vit

Although early epidemiologic studies showed a protective effect of adequate maternal folic acid (FA) status against neural tube defects (NTDs), the role of adequate vitamin B-12 nutrition in the putative reduction of NTD frequency has remained uncertain. Evaluating vitamin B-12 status was complicated by the need to control for altered FA status after fortification in Canada. More recent studies have made use of better biomarkers of vitamin B-12 status, including methylmalonic acid and holotranscobalamin (holoTC). HoloTC provides a useful measure of vitamin B-12 status because it represents the

Background: Globally, one-third of pregnant women are at risk of iron deficiency, particularly in the African region. While recent findings show that iron and folate supplementation can lower the risk of adverse birth outcomes and childhood mortality, our understanding of its impact in Africa remains incomplete due to insufficient evidence. This protocol outlines the systematic review steps to investigate the impact of oral iron and folate supplementation during pregnancy on adverse birth outcomes, neonatal mortality and infant mortality in Africa. Indiscriminate use of multivitamin/mineral supplements in the general population may be misguided, but patients with chronic Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) should be monitored and compensated for nutritional deficiencies. Mechanistic links between vitamin/mineral deficiencies and IBD pathology has been found for some micronutrients and normalizing their levels is clinically beneficial. Others, like vitamin A, although instinctively desirable, produced disappointing results. Restoring normal levels of the selected micronutrients requires elevated doses to compensate for defects in absorptive

DESIGN: Observational study.
SETTING: Tertiary care teaching hospital in Northern India.
PARTICIPANTS: 50 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
PROCEDURE: Children were assessed for nutritional status (Weight for age Z-score, serum albumin, folate and B12) at presentation, and were followed-up during induction for bone marrow response, counts and outcome. Folate and B12 were re
