Hip-phase-dependent flexion reflex modulation and expression of spasms in patients with spinal cord injury.

The flexion reflex in human spinal cord injury (SCI) is believed to incorporate interneuronal circuits that consist elements of the stepping generator while ample evidence suggest that hip proprioceptive input is a controlling signal of locomotor output. In this study, we examined the expression of the non-nociceptive flexion reflex in response to imposed sinusoidal passive movements of the ipsilateral hip in human SCI. The flexion reflex was elicited by low-intensity stimulation (300 Hz, 30 ms pulse train) of the right sural nerve at the lateral malleolus, and recorded from the tibialis anter

Feedforward activity of the cervical flexor muscles during voluntary arm movements is delayed in chronic neck pain.

The objective of this study was to compare onset of deep and superficial cervical flexor muscle activity during rapid, unilateral arm movements between ten patients with chronic neck pain and 12 control subjects. Deep cervical flexor (DCF) electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded with custom electrodes inserted via the nose and fixed by suction to the posterior mucosa of the oropharynx. Surface electrodes were placed over the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and anterior scalene (AS) muscles. While standing, subjects flexed and extended the right arm in response to a visual stimulus. For the con

Caloric tests on platform: "paradoxical responsiveness".

This paper deals with the abnormal responsiveness of the paradoxical stabilizing type (SR) occurring after caloric tests (CALT) performed on a passive force platform. The normal response after CALT (cold/warm, monaurally performed) consists of transient ataxia and body sway towards the side of the nystagmic slow phase induced by a similar CALT. Quantitatively the vestibular responsiveness to CALT is defined as the quotient of lengths QL calculated with measures of recordings after CALT (cold and warm responses averaged) versus recordings at rest. A normal vestibular responsiveness is defined a

Function and dysfunction of the masticatory system in individuals with intact and restored dentitions. A clinical, psychological and physiological study.

In all, 125 individuals, 13-23 years old, with intact dentitions and 163 individuals, 13-20 years old, with dental fillings were included in a series of studies. The results of the studies suggest that subjects with intact dentitions have a lower prevalence and degree of signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction than subjects with restorations in the teeth. However, most signs and symptoms in both groups were mild and infrequent. The most common symptoms in both groups were TMJ-sounds, tiredness during chewing, and headache, and the most common clinical signs were TMJ-sounds and muscles ten

Arterial hydrogen ion versus CO2 on depth and rate of breathing in decerebrate cats.

Arterial blood hydrogen ion concentration (Ha+) was altered over the range of 25 to 110 nM (pH 7.60 to 6.96) by slow intravenous infusion of 1.0 N NaHCO3 or 0.5 N HC1 at controlled levels of Paco2in unanesthetized decerebrate cats. Respiratory f varied as a single function of Vt irrespective of a lterations in Paco2 and Ha+ even after interruption of the carotid sinus nerves. The dependence of f upon Vt was abolished by vagotomy. However, Vt continued to respond to changes in Ha+ over its entire range after combined section of the vagus and carotid sinus nerves. In all statxceeded by 5 to 10 t

[Sensory-psychomotor evaluation in Autism: A new tool for functional diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: Psychomotor impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have frequently been described in scientific literature. Such deficits impact upon the development of social motor function and interfere with the ability to adjust to everyday life. The inclusion of sensory-motor signs in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) confirms their importance in the diagnosis of ASD. Previous literature has shown the presence precocity of these signs, sometimes before the alteration of the social communication. To our knowledge, there are no existing clinical tools to

The mechanotransduction protein STOML3 is required for proprioceptor plasticity following peripheral nerve regeneration.

Nerve regeneration is associated with the plasticity of sensory neurons such that even muscle afferents directed to the skin form mechanosensitive receptive fields appropriate for the new target. STOML3 is an essential mechanotransduction component in many cutaneous mechanoreceptors. Here, we asked whether STOML3 is required for functional and anatomical plasticity following peripheral nerve regeneration. We used a cross-anastomosis model adapted to the mouse, in which the medial gastrocnemius nerve was redirected to innervate hairy skin previously occupied by the sural nerve. We recorded from

Attenuation of sensory processing in the primary somatosensory cortex during rubber hand illusion.

The neural representation of the body is easily altered by the integration of multiple sensory signals in the brain. The "rubber hand illusion" (RHI) is one of the most popular experimental paradigms to investigate this phenomenon. During this illusion, a feeling of ownership of the rubber hand is created. Some studies have shown that somatosensory processing in the brain is attenuated when RHI occurs. However, it is unknown where attenuation of somatosensory processing occurs. Here, we show that somatosensory processing is attenuated in the primary somatosensory cortex. We found that the earl

Cervico-ocular Reflex Is Increased in People With Nonspecific Neck Pain.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a widespread complaint. People experiencing neck pain often present an altered timing in contraction of cervical muscles. This altered afferent information elicits the cervico-ocular reflex (COR), which stabilizes the eye in response to trunk-to-head movements. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) elicited by the vestibulum is thought to be unaffected by afferent information from the cervical spine. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to measure the COR and VOR in people with nonspecific neck pain. DESIGN: This study utilized a cross-sectional design in accordance with

A connective tissue disorder may underlie ESSENCE problems in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type, also known as Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (EDS-HT/JHS), is the most common hereditary disorder of the connective tissue (HDCT). It is characterized by tissue fragility, joint hypermobility and a wide range of articular and non-articular manifestations, which often appear in infancy. The clinical picture of EDS-HT/JHS is poorly known by the medical community, as is the presence of "ESSENCE" (Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations) problems in affected children. AIM: The present work reviews the clin

Visual contribution to human standing balance during support surface tilts.

Visual position and velocity cues improve human standing balance, reducing sway responses to external disturbances and sway variability. Previous work suggested that human balancing is based on sensory estimates of external disturbances and their compensation using feedback mechanisms (Disturbance Estimation and Compensation, DEC model). This study investigates the visual effects on sway responses to pseudo-random support surface tilts, assuming that improvements result from lowering the velocity threshold in a tilt estimate and the position threshold in an estimate of the gravity disturbance.

Blood Flow Restriction-Assisted Rehabilitation for Persistent Osgood-Schlatter Disease in an Adolescent Footballer: A Case Report with Isokinetic Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD), also known as Lannelongue disease, is a type of osteochondritis that affects teenagers. The effectiveness of blood flow restriction training (BFRT) in a structured rehabilitation program for cases that do not respond to conventional treatment has not been studied. By demonstrating the supporting impact of BFRT on progressive loading strategies and functional recovery, this example contributes to the expanding body of information on advanced rehabilitation procedures in OSD. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male athlete's main concerns were restricted pa

"Finger-Touch Approach" for Novice Microsurgical Assistants: A Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgical procedures demand precise hand-eye coordination, yet the surgeon's hands often remain outside the visual field until instruments enter the microscope view, impairing spatial awareness. We developed the finger-touch approach (FTA) to provide an additional proprioceptive reference point, hypothesizing it would improve safety and confidence without compromising efficiency. METHODS: A simulation task was designed to replicate microsurgical suture-cutting assistance, one of the most common procedures performed by a microsurgery assistant. [Age-related stiffness: can stretching improve function and autonomy in older adults?].

INTRODUCTION: Aging is associated with progressive changes in the musculoskeletal system, contributing to reduced joint mobility, flexibility, and motor function. These alterations may compromise autonomy in older adults, favoring musculoskeletal pain, functional limitations, and increased risk of falls. In this context, stretching is commonly included in adapted physical activity and rehabilitation programs for older individuals. OBJECTIVE: To critically analyze the available evidence regarding the usefulness of stretching in older adults, with particular focus on joint mobility, physical fu

Impact of Sensory Haptic Vibrotactile Feedback on Manual Dexterity in Augmented Reality.

The use of immersive environments is increasing, especially in rehabilitation and other areas, like sports and gaming. Tasks performed in virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) often have poorer motor performance, in part due to reduced tactile and proprioceptive inputs. We investigated whether vibrotactile haptic feedback could enhance motor performance within AR. We used the Box and Block Test (BBT) to investigate manual dexterity, where participants moved cubes over a partition using one hand. Participants performed the task in 8 conditions: Real, AR without feedback, and AR with haptic wristban

Me in action: Distinct processing levels shape the relationship between sense of agency and sense of ownership.

Competing neurocognitive models offer different accounts of how the sense of agency (the experience of controlling one's actions) and the sense of ownership (the experience that one's body belongs to oneself) relate within bodily self-awareness. The additive model proposes that agency entails ownership, the independence model treats the two experiences as functionally distinct, and the interactive model suggests reciprocal influences between them. However, empirical tests comparing these predictions within a single coherent experimental paradigm remain limited. Here, we developed an immersive
