Portable technology for postural control measurement: Comparing head position with center of pressure data.

BACKGROUND: Standing is a basic human function that healthy adults take for granted, yet it is a complex perceptual-motor process that requires sensation of position and motion from the sensory systems. OBJECTIVE: We assessed agreement between center of pressure data from a laboratory force-platform and head position data from an HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) for the evaluation of standing postural control. We investigated the impact of different statistical choices when assessing the relationship between two measurements. Specifically: 1) How does correlation and agreement statistics r

Bacterial cellulose matrix and acellular dermal matrix seeded with fibroblasts grown in platelet-rich plasma supplemented medium, compared to free gingival grafts: a randomized animal study.

PURPOSE: Mucogingival defects (MGDs), such as dental root recessions, decreased vestibular depth, and absence of keratinized tissues, are commonly seen in dental clinics. MGDs may result in functional, aesthetic, and hygienic concerns. In these situations, autogenous soft tissue grafts are considered the gold-standard treatment. This study compares the healing process of free gingival grafts (FGGs) to bacterial cellulose matrix (BCM) and human acellular dermal matrix (ADM) seeded with fibroblasts from culture supplemented with platelet-rich plasma in a rat model. METHODS: Surgical defects wer

Altered brain function in persistent postural perceptual dizziness: A study on resting state functional connectivity.

This study used resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) to investigate whole brain networks in patients with persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD). We compared rsfMRI data from 38 patients with PPPD and 38 healthy controls using whole brain and region of interest analyses. We examined correlations among connectivity and clinical variables and tested the ability of a machine learning algorithm to classify subjects using rsfMRI results. Patients with PPPD showed: (a) increased connectivity of subcallosal cortex with left superior lateral occipital cortex and left m

Musashi-1 is the candidate of the regulator of hair cell progenitors during inner ear regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Hair cell loss in the cochlea is caused by ototoxic drugs, aging, and environmental stresses and could potentially lead to devastating pathophysiological effects. In adult mammals, hair cell loss is irreversible and may result in hearing and balance deficits. In contrast, nonmammalian vertebrates, including birds, can regenerate hair cells through differentiation of supporting cells and restore inner ear function, suggesting that hair cell progenitors are present in the population of supporting cells. RESULTS: In the present study, we aimed to identify novel genes related to regen

Recent Advances in Cerebellar Ischemic Stroke Syndromes Causing Vertigo and Hearing Loss.

Cerebellar ischemic stroke is one of the common causes of vascular vertigo. It usually accompanies other neurological symptoms or signs, but a small infarct in the cerebellum can present with vertigo without other localizing symptoms. Approximately 11 % of the patients with isolated cerebellar infarction simulated acute peripheral vestibulopathy, and most patients had an infarct in the territory of the medial branch of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). A head impulse test can differentiate acute isolated vertigo associated with PICA territory cerebellar infarction from more beni

Preservation of labyrinthine structures while drilling the posterior wall of the internal auditory canal in surgery of vestibular schwannomas via the retrosigmoid suboccipital approach.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new technique for safe drilling of the posterior wall of the internal auditory canal (IAC), in which the intact posterior lip of the internal auditory meatus is used as a fixed intraoperative reference point to preserve the integrity of labyrinthine structures. METHODS: The retrosigmoid suboccipital approach was used to operate on 6 cases of vestibular schwannomas (Koos grade I and II), with preserved hearing. On a preoperative high-resolution computed tomography scan, a line starting 2 cm lateral to the lateral edge of the sigmoid sinus on the dura mater and directed

Meningitis, cranial neuritis, and radiculoneuritis associated with Borrelia burgdorferi infection in a horse.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old Thoroughbred was examined because of signs of depression, neck stiffness, and poor performance. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination revealed that the horse was dull, appeared depressed, was reluctant to raise its neck and head above a horizontal plane, and had a temperature of 38.5°C (101.3°F). No radiographic or scintigraphic abnormalities of the neck were found; however, high plasma fibrinogen concentration and relative lymphopenia were identified and the horse was seropositive for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi. Analysis of CSF revealed neutroph

A Hybrid Extended Least Squares method (HybELS) for Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex identification.

The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) plays an essential role in the majority of daily activities by keeping the images of the world steady on the retina when either the environment or the body is moving. The modeling and identification of this system plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and lesions, and their associated syndromes. Today, clinical protocols incorporate mathematical techniques for testing the functionality of patients' VORs through the analysis of the patients' responses to various stimuli. We have developed a new tool for simultaneous identification

Vestibulo-ocular reflex dynamics with head-impulses discriminates Usher patients type 1 and 2.

Usher Syndrome classification takes into account the absence of vestibular function but its correlation with genotype is not well characterized. We intend to investigate whether video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) is useful in screening and to differentiate Usher Syndrome types. 29 Usher patients (USH) with a genetically confirmed diagnosis and 30 healthy controls were studied with vHIT and dizziness handicap inventory questionnaire (DHI). Statistical significant differences between USH1, USH2 and controls were found in the vestibulo-ocular-reflex (VOR) gain of all SCCs, with USH1 patients consiste

Effect of Sound Source Location and Spatial Hearing on the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex.

BACKGROUND: There have been conflicting results on the effect of auditory stimulation on the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) with some studies indicating suppression, enhancement, or no effect. No studies to date have assessed the effect of sound source location on VOR gain or the relationship between spatial hearing ability and VOR gain. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to determine if VOR gain was affected by moving the location of the sound source within participants and to determine if these effects were related to spatial hearing ability. RESEARCH DESIGN: A between subjects r

Nasal anatomy and sniffing in respiration and olfaction of wild and domestic animals.

Animals have been widely utilized as surrogate models for humans in exposure testing, infectious disease experiments, and immunology studies. However, respiratory diseases affect both humans and animals. These disorders can spontaneously affect wild and domestic animals, impacting their quality and quantity of life. The origin of such responses can primarily be traced back to the pathogens deposited in the respiratory tract. There is a lack of understanding of the transport and deposition of respirable particulate matter (bio-aerosols or viruses) in either wild or domestic animals. Moreover, l

Anxiety and Motion Sickness Susceptibility May Influence the Ability to Update Orientation in the Horizontal Plane of Healthy Subjects.

Few studies have evaluated the influence of idiosyncrasies that may influence the judgment of space-time orientation after passive motion. We designed a study to assess the influence of anxiety/depression (which may distort time perception), motion sickness susceptibility (which has been related to vestibular function, disorientation, and to the velocity storage mechanism), and personal habits on the ability to update orientation, after passive rotations in the horizontal plane. Eighty-one healthy adults (22-64 years old) accepted to participate. After they completed an in-house general health

Identification of Novel CDH23 Variants Causing Moderate to Profound Progressive Nonsyndromic Hearing Loss.

Mutant alleles of CDH23, a gene that encodes a putative calcium-dependent cell-adhesion glycoprotein with multiple cadherin-like domains, are responsible for both recessive DFNB12 nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) and Usher syndrome 1D (USH1D). The encoded protein cadherin 23 (CDH23) plays a vital role in maintaining normal cochlear and retinal function. The present study's objective was to elucidate the role of DFNB12 allelic variants of CDH23 in Saudi Arabian patients. Four affected offspring of a consanguineous family with autosomal recessive moderate to profound NSHL without any vestibular

On computational fluid dynamics models for sinonasal drug transport: Relevance of nozzle subtraction and nasal vestibular dilation.

Generating anatomically realistic 3-dimensional (3D) models of the human sinonasal cavity for numerical investigations of sprayed drug transport presents a host of methodological ambiguities. For example, subject-specific radiographic images used for 3D reconstructions typically exclude spray bottles. Subtracting a bottle contour from the 3D airspace and dilating the anterior nasal vestibule for nozzle placement augment the complexity of model building. So we explored the question: how essential are these steps to adequately simulate nasal airflow and identify the optimal delivery conditions f

Vestibulospinal and Corticospinal Modulation of Lumbosacral Network Excitability in Human Subjects.

As part of a project aimed to develop a novel, non-invasive techniques for comprehensive assessment of supraspinal-spinal connectivity in humans, the present study sought to explore the convergence of descending vestibulospinal and corticospinal pathways onto lumbosacral motor pools. Transcutaneous electrical spinal stimulation-evoked motor potentials were recorded from knee and ankle flexors and extensors in resting neurologically intact participants. Descending influences on lumbosacral motor neurons were studied using galvanic vestibular (GVS) or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to e

Novel and De Novo Mutations Extend Association of POU3F4 with Distinct Clinical and Radiological Phenotype of Hearing Loss.

POU3F4 mutations (DFNX2) are the most prevalent among non-syndromic X-linked hearing loss (HL) identified to date. Clinical manifestations of DFNX2 usually comprise congenital HL either sensorineural or mixed, a tendency towards perilymphatic gusher during otologic surgery and temporal bone malformations. The aim of the present study was to screen for POU3F4 mutations in a group of 30 subjects with a suggestive clinical phenotype as well as a group (N = 1671-2018) of unselected hearing loss patients. We also planned to analyze audiological and radiological features in patients with HL caused b

Diagnostic Accuracy of Intracochlear Test Electrode for Acoustic Nerve Monitoring in Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CIs) are a well-known hearing restoration option for patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) in cases of neurofibromatosis type-2 and, more recently, for patients with sporadic VS. One of the main limitations when performing CI during VS surgery is the capability to preserve the acoustic nerve (AN) anatomically and functionally. Significant efforts have been directed toward developing an intraoperative testing method for monitoring the AN function to determine if, after tumor removal, it is suitable for conducting stimuli delivered by a CI. However, all these me
