The [2+2] cycloaddition reaction between the Si=C double bond of adamantylsilene and the carbonyl group of aliphatic, aromatic or acetylenic ketones and aldehydes is demonstrated. The product of this reaction that is central to a non-ionic version of the Peterson olefination is an unusual four-membered 1,2-silaoxetane heterocycle that was characterized spectroscopically and crystallographically. The presence of significant denitrification activity in an aerobic toluene-treating biofilter was demonstrated under batch and flow-through conditions. N2O concentrations of 9.2 ppmv were produced by denitrifying bacteria in the presence of 15% acetylene, in a flow-through system with a bulk gas phase O2 concentration of >17%. Hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) are crucial for producing renewable and ecological hydrogen energy. Here we report the finding that ethyl acetylene (C2H2), borane (B2H6), and benzene (C6H6) undergo drastic dehydrogenation reactions upon interaction with niobium cluster anions (Nbn-). BACKGROUND: There is some evidence that surgical plume may pose a risk to health professionals, but the risks posed by volatile organic compounds have not been thoroughly investigated.
METHODS: The composition of volatile organic compounds in diathermy plume produced during surgery was analysed by selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry.
RESULTS: Hydrogen cyanide (3-51 parts per million), acetylene (2-8 parts per million), and 1,3-butadiene (0.15-0.69 parts per million) were identified in the plume.

Nanopatterned thin films of the metal-organic framework {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]} (bpac=bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene) are elaborated by the combination of a sequential assembly process and a lithographic method. A library of 10 novel benzenesulfonamides containing triazole-tethered phenyl 'tail' moieties were synthesized by a Cu(I) catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (DCR) (i.e., click chemistry) between 4-azido benzenesulfonamide and a panel of variously substituted phenyl acetylenes. Experiments were carried out to investigate the reduction of tri- and tetra-chloroethene with iron in aqueous solutions. Results indicate (i) dependence of the dehalogenation capacity of the iron on its sulfur content and (ii) that ethyne was the primary dehalogenated hydrocarbon for both compounds. A reaction mechanism based on in situ formation of ferrous sulfide as the catalyst and its reaction with the halocompounds in the presence of hydrogen has been postulated.
