A Profiling System for the Assessment of Individual Needs for Rehabilitation With Hearing Aids.

This study focuses on the development of a profiling system to specify the needs of hearing-aid candidates. As a basis for the profile of co … opriate to also categorize individual COSI targets. The results show a good agreement between eight audiologists in the categorization of COSI goals along the six dimensions. The results per dimension show that the dimension focus or discrimination can be regarded as superfluous. Possible additional dimensions were tinnitus and listening effort. The results in …

An Innovative Approach for Increasing Access to Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids in Rural Communities of Alabama.

Adults living in rural communities of Alabama have limited or no access to hearing healthcare for a variety of reasons. Hearing loss can result in decreased social contact, potentially leading to loneliness, and it has been associated with depression and cognitive decline. To improve access to hearing healthcare, the FDA released its Final Rule in 2022 stating that adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss can purchase over-the-counter hearing aids (OTC HAs) on their own without clearance from a physician or through the care of an audiologist. Current research suggests, however, that

Strategies for improving music perception and enjoyment: a case study of a deafblind musician with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the experiences of a deafblind cochlear implant (CI) user, who is also a musician and a music therapist. It aims to provide insights into adaptive strategies that might improve music listening with CIs. METHODS: A qualitative case study framework was utilized, incorporating an in-depth semi-structured interview with the participant. This methodological approach facilitated a comprehensive examination of the participant's musical engagement and the evolution of their auditory experiences over time. The transcribed data were analyzed using thematic analysis to id

Characteristics and Help-Seeking Behavior of People Failing a Smart Device Self-Test for Hearing.

Purpose This study investigated user characteristics, help-seeking behavior, and follow-up actions of people who failed an app-based digits-in-noise hearing screening test, considering their stage of change. Method Test and user characteristics of 3,092 listeners who failed the test were retrospectively analyzed. A posttest survey determining follow-up (verb) actions was sent to listeners who failed the test (n = 1,007), of which 59 responded. Results The majority of listeners were in the precontemplation stage (75.5%). Age and stage of change were significant (p < .05) predictors of the digit

Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED): A diagnostic challenge.

Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) has been defined as a condition of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), caused by an 'uncontroll … ers is a challenging diagnosis based on exclusion. A close collaboration between otolaryngologists, audiologists and rheumatologists is recommended, in order to achieve the multidisciplinary management of this rare entity, since an early AIED identification and a prompt medical treatment might result in acceptable hearing outcomes. Otitis media related hearing loss in Indonesian school children.

OBJECTIVE: There are scant recent studies from low middle-income countries that investigate the impact of otitis media (OM) on hearing loss (HL) in school children. METHODS: This was a prospective epidemiological survey conducted by otorhinolaryngologists and audiologists in a sample of 7005 public school children (6-15 years) from 6 urban and rural sub-districts, in Indonesia. Children with otoscopic abnormalities or who failed a hearing-screening test conducted at school, underwent diagnostic audiometry and tympanometry. RESULTS: OM was detected in 172 children (2.5%), acute otitis media -…

Stages of change in audiology: comparison of three self-assessment measures.

OBJECTIVE: In a clinical setting, theories of health behaviour change could help audiologists and other hearing health care professionals understand the barriers that prevent people with hearing problems to seek audiological help. The transtheoretical (stages of change) model of health behaviour change is one of these theories. It describes a person's journey towards health behaviour change (e.g. seeking help or taking up rehabilitation) in separate stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and, finally, maintenance. A short self-assessment measure of stages of change may g…

Features, Functionality, and Acceptability of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus in the United States.

Objective Although tinnitus is one of the most commonly reported symptoms in the general population, patients with bothersome tinnitus are challenged by issues related to accessibility of care and intervention options that lack strong evidence to support their use. Therefore, creative ways of delivering evidence-based interventions are necessary. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) demonstrates potential as a means of delivering this support but is not currently available in the United States. This article discusses the adaptation of an ICBT intervention, originally used in Swed

Remote cochlear implant candidacy assessment, activation and speech perception testing in northern communities: a quality improvement case study.

OBJECTIVES: This quality improvement (QI) case study conducted at a large adult CI centre aimed to improve access to cochlear implant (CI) care for northern communities. By adapting existing infrastructure using tele-audiology in novel ways, we were able to complete CI candidacy assessments, CI activations and CI speech perception testing remotely. METHOD: Two remote sites were trained and equipped to facilitate remote sessions for expanded CI care services. These collaborating sites were outfitted with CI software, adaptors, and standardized speech testing WAV sound files. CI audiologists fr…

Stakeholder perspectives on hearing conservation programmes in the South African mining sector: A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Stakeholders play a crucial role in the success of complex interventions, such as hearing conservation programmes (HCPs), where their active participation directly impacts outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the views of various stakeholders, involved in occupational noise management, in the mining sector in South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted, recruiting 16 participants through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Participants represented diverse roles, including Mine Health and Safety officials, audiologists, ventilation and occupat…

Predicting children's real-ear-to-coupler differences based on tympanometric data.

OBJECTIVE: Paediatric hearing-aid verification relies on measures of output obtained from the ear canal or in a coupler with the child's real-ear-to-coupler difference (RECD). Measured RECD cannot always be completed in children, leading to fitting inaccuracies. Audiologists often have tympanometry data that characterises the child's ear-canal acoustics. The goal of this study was to determine if tympanometry can be used to improve predictions of measured RECD. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of RECD and admittance, tympanometric peak pressure, and equivalent ear-canal volume from 226 Hz tym…
