RF Channel Modeling for Implant-to-Implant Communication and Implant to Subcutaneous Implant Communication for Future Leadless Cardiac Pacemakers.

Propagation of radio-frequency signals inside human body is demanding to analyze as it is a highly complex medium consisting of different frequency-dependent lossy materials of varying thickness. Moreover, experimental analyses are also unfeasible because that requires probes to be placed inside a human body to collect the signals. This paper focuses on in-body to in-body implant communication for future multinodal capsule-like leadless cardiac pacemaker technology. The frequency range of 0.3-3 GHz is analyzed using very detailed numerical simulations of digital human models. The results show …

Strengths and Gaps in Physicians' Risk Communication: A Scenario Study of the Influence of Numeracy on Cancer Screening Communication.

OBJECTIVE: Many patients have low numeracy, which impedes their understanding of important information about health (e.g., benefits and harms of screening). We investigated whether physicians adapt their risk communication to accommodate the needs of patients with low numeracy, and how physicians' own numeracy influences their understanding and communication of screening statistics. METHODS: UK family physicians ( N = 151) read a description of a patient seeking advice on cancer screening. We manipulated the level of numeracy of the patient (low v. high v. unspecified) and measured physicians…

Parent and teacher report of pragmatic aspects of communication: use of the children's communication checklist in a clinical setting.

The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was developed to provide an objective assessment of pragmatic aspects of children's communication difficulties. We aimed to (1) see whether the checklist provided valid and reliable information when completed by parents, and (2) consider its usefulness in a clinical context. Checklists were completed by parents and a professional who knew the child well for all 5 to 17-year-old referrals to a tertiary developmental paediatrics centre over a 31-month period. Children who were not yet speaking in sentences were excluded. From a sample of 151 children …

An Examination of Context-Aware Augmentative and Alternative Communication with Automated Response Options for Academic Communication from Autistic Children.

Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) often face barriers to full academic participation due to the difficulties of navigating traditional AAC displays. Advances in artificial intelligence may enable context-aware AAC tools that generate response options based on linguistic input from communication partners, enabling faster and more effective communication and potentially increasing academic participation. This study compared the effects of a context-aware AAC prototype to traditional AAC in supporting academic …

Development of the FOCUS (Focus on the Outcomes of Communication Under Six), a communication outcome measure for preschool children.

AIM: Our aim was to develop an outcome measure, called Focus on the Outcomes of Communication Under Six (FOCUS), that captures real-world changes in preschool children's communication. Conceptually grounded in the World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework, the FOCUS items were derived from observations of change provided by parents and clinicians after speech-language therapy. METHOD: Participating families (n=165) were drawn from a convenience sample at partner institutions in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia. Al…

Communication Experiences of Patients With Hearing Loss During Hemodialysis Treatment and the Potential Role of Communication Tools: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: People with hearing loss may have difficulty communicating with health care providers if not properly supported. Hearing loss is common among people with kidney failure. Outpatient hemodialysis centers may present communication barriers due to noisy machines and overlapping conversations. Tools, such as assistive listening devices, exist to help people with hearing loss communicate. If and how they should be used in the outpatient hemodialysis setting is unclear. Understanding the patient perspective is an important first step before implementing such solutions. OBJECTIVE: Describ…

Improving international medical students' communication skills in psychosomatic care through a communication training seminar: a natural language processing-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: International students face numerous challenges in both their academic and social lives when relocating to a new country for their university studies. The foreign language can have an impact on international medical students' performance in patient encounters. Particularly in the context of psychosocial medicine, a deficiency in communication skills can negatively impact the doctor-patient-relationship. This is the first study that uses natural language processing (NLP) as well as traditional rating scales to assess the improvement of international students' communication skills af…

Lived experience of cognitive-communication changes for people with acquired brain injury and familiar communication partners: A qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive-communication disorder (CCD) is common after acquired brain injury (ABI), reported in about two-thirds of people who sustain an injury. Quantitative studies have found that the disorder can negatively impact a person's ability to socially re-integrate into the community, return to work or education and achieve a good quality of life. However, little is known about how the disorder impacts people with ABI and the family. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative evidence synthesis was to provide a detailed exploration of the lived experience of CCD for people w…

All providers Better Communication Skills (ABCs) program: protocol for a randomized controlled trial assessing communication training effectiveness with interprofessional clinicians.

BACKGROUND: High-quality person-centred communication for those living with serious illness benefits patients, families, and health care professionals (HCPs). However, research suggests that HCPs often find it challenging to engage in these discussions. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the 'All providers Better Communication Skills' (ABCs), an online blended learning program delivered over three months. The ABCs program seeks to complement existing programs by adopting an interprofessional and person-centred educational philosophy, teaching core communication skills …

[Communication in later life under institutional conditions : Professional perspectives on communication of ageing people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities].

BACKGROUND: For people with (profound) intellectual and multiple disabilities verbal language is often not the primary means of communication. Communication is closely tied to familiar persons and the interpretation of individual forms of expression. In later life health-related changes, the loss of social relationships and institutional transitions can substantially impair communication. OBJECTIVE: Based on group interviews with professionals this paper examines the significance of communication partners, the professional and institutional prerequisites for successful communication in later …

A trained communication partner's use of responsive strategies in aided communication with three adults with Rett syndrome: A case report.

PURPOSE: To explore and describe a trained communication partner's use of responsive strategies in dyadic interaction with adults with Rett syndrome. INTRODUCTION: Responsive partner strategies facilitate social, communicative, and linguistic development. The common feature is that the communication partner responds contingently to the other's focus of attention and interprets their acts as communicative. Research on responsive partner strategies that involves individuals with significant communication and motor disabilities remains sparse. The same applies to if, and how, the use of communic…
