The best available technique (BAT) for managing the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is represented by anaerobic digestion (AD) and subsequent composting. This research explored a new industrial model in the framework of the C2Land international project, with the insertion of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a post-treatment for OFMSW digestate. The reaction was set for 3 h at three different temperatures (180 ÷ 220 °C); the wet solid hydrochar obtained after filtration was then co-composted with greenery waste as a bulking agent and untreated OFMSW digestate in four differ…

BACKGROUND: Biosolarization is a fumigation alternative that combines passive solar heating with amendment-driven soil microbial activity to temporarily create antagonistic soil conditions, such as elevated temperature and acidity, that can inactivate weed seeds and other pest propagules. The aim of this study was to use a mesocosm-based field trial to assess soil heating, pH, volatile fatty acid accumulation and weed seed inactivation during biosolarization.
RESULTS: Biosolarization for 8 days using 2% mature green waste compost and 2 or 5% tomato processing residues in the soil resulted in

In order to assess the potential exposure hazard to workers and people living in the immediate surroundings of an area characterized by an open composting facility and a wastewater treatment plant, a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of airborne microorganisms were carried out. Air sampling was performed once a week for four consecutive weeks in summer and winter. Six sites were selected as air sampling sites: one was upwind at approximately 40 m from the facilities; the other five were downwind at increasing distances from the facilities, with the furthest at 100 m away. Monitoring perm…

Two challenges frequently encountered in the production of ornamental plants in organic horticulture are: (1) the rate of mineralization of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from organic fertilizers can be too slow to meet the high nutrient demand of young plants, and (2) the exclusive use of peat as a substrate for pot-based plant culture is discouraged in organic production systems. In this situation, the use of beneficial soil microorganisms in combination with high quality compost substrates can contribute to adequate plant growth and flower development. In this study, we examined possible a

Humic-like substances (HLS) were extracted from a mixture of sewage sludges and trimmings (70-30%, w/w) after different times of composting (0, 70 days and 130 days). HLS were analyzed by elemental analysis, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy and also tested for their ability to photosensitize the degradation of Irgarol. The rate of Irgarol photodegradation in artificial solar light was found to be 2.5- to 4.3-fold higher in the presence of HLS than in buffered Milli-Q water. These results were confirmed by experiments in solar light that evidenced the photodegrading properties of HLS in…

Current research on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) removal during manure composting has primarily focused on differences across animal species. However, how farming practices, which fundamentally differ in feed composition, antibiotic use, and rearing density, shape ARGs removal patterns and underlying mechanisms remains poorly understood. Here we compared manure composting between large-scale (LS) and free-range (FR) systems and revealed fundamentally divergent causal pathways governing ARGs dynamics. LS achieved higher removal rates of total ARGs (93% vs 57%) and total mobile genetic ele…

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can accumulate in municipal sewage sludge, and their interactions with humified organic matter may influence their association state, mobility, and potential re-release during composting-based resource recovery. Humic acid (HA), a key humified product of sludge composting, provides reactive organic domains that may regulate PFAS behavior. Here, we investigated PFAS-HA interactions in a simplified HA-rich aqueous microenvironment under temperature conditions relevant to traditional thermophilic composting (TC, 333 K) and hyperthermophilic composting (H…

Seaweed waste, abundant and rich in plant-stimulating properties, has the potential to be transformed into valuable soil amendments through proper composting and utilization management. Given its low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, co-composting seaweed with carbon-rich cornstarch dregs is an effective strategy. However, the potential application of co-composting largely depends on the efficiency of the composting and the quality of the product. This study explores the effects of adding 10 % corn stalk biochar to a co-composting system of seaweed and cornstarch dregs, alongside varying buffering cap…

The effects of the independent and combined addition strategies of sepiolite and palygorskite on humification and heavy metals (HMs) during chicken manure composting were evaluated. Results showed that clay mineral addition showed a favorable effect on composting, prolonged the duration of the thermophilic phase (5-9 d) and improved the TN content (14%-38%) compared to CK. Independent strategy enhanced the humification degree in equal measures with the combined strategy. Carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C NMR) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that a…

This study explored the influence of pyrolysis temperatures on the properties of municipal sludge-based biochar (MSB) and evaluated the impact of MSB on humification and oxytetracycline (OTC, a broad-spectrum antibiotic) degradation in pig manure composting. Three types of MSB were produced from sewage sludge pyrolyzed at 300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C, respectively. Results indicated that pyrolysis temperature adjusted the formation sequence of the functional groups in MSB, and higher pyrolysis temperatures enriched the aromaticity of the biochar and augmented the concentrations of humic precurso…

The high-nitrogen content and dense structure of poultry manure compost cause volatilization of N to ammonia (NH3). This study evaluated the combined application of biochar and biotrickling filtration (BTF) to remove of odor in chicken manure mixed straw compost (w/w, 2.5:1). Adding of 10% biochar reduced NH3, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) contents by 20.04%, 16.18%, and 17.55% respectively, and decreased the N loss rate by 8.27%, compared with those observed in control. The organic matter content decreased by 28.11% and germination index reached 97.36% i

This work was aimed to determine the effects of different minerals on humic acid (HA) formation. Minerals can stimulate the formation of complex compounds, however, whether they can promote the conversion of complex compounds to HA has not been verified. Four treatments were setup from chicken manure mixed with rice hull and then added biochar (BC), montmorillonite (MMT) and biochar combined with montmorillonite (BC-MMT) for composting, while the control check (CK) was composted without minerals. The results showed that HA concentration was increased by 28.09%, 40.79%, 45.39% and 38.96% during…

In this study, aerobic co-composting of tylosin fermentation dregs (TFDs) and sewage sludge with different adding concentrations of copper (Cu) was investigated to inspect the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Results showed that two concentrations of Cu did affect not only the abiotic factors but the relative abundances of resistance genes. High concentration of Cu inhibited the metabolic capacity of microbial community and the nitrogen-fixing process while had little effect on the degradation of TYL and TOC. The abun…

Biofiltration of NH3 and H2S with different packing media, biodehydration stage compost (BSC), and curing stage compost (CSC) was studied. Meanwhile, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy was used to characterize the conversion mechanisms of organic matter during these biofiltration processes. Both biofilters were effective for the simultaneous removal of NH3 and H2S when inlet concentrations of NH3 and H2S were 0-50 and 50-250 mg/m3, respectively. An abrupt increase in the inlet gas concentrations of NH3 and H2S to 100-150 and 200-250 mg/m3, respectively, caused the decre

Membrane-covered aerobic composting (MCAC) has shown potential for mitigating gaseous emissions; however, the coupled mechanisms governing gas distribution and transport within the system remain unclear. In this study, pore-gas distributions and emission characteristics of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ammonia (NH3) were investigated in an MCAC system. Meanwhile, a coupled heat-mass-momentum transfer model was developed to simulate the spatiotemporal evolution of temperature and oxygen concentration under membrane-covered conditions. Results showed that pore-gas…

This study presents the first comprehensive facility-wide assessment of greenhouse-gas emissions and energy balance at a full-scale hybrid anaerobic-aerobic composting (AC) facility integrating high-solids anaerobic digestion with aerobic stabilization. Multi-season, phase-resolved monitoring was conducted using dynamic flux chambers for CO2, N2O, NH3, H2S, and NMVOCs, and UAV-based flux-curtain surveys for CH4, revealed distinct gas-specific emission patterns across operational stages. CH4, CO2, and H2S emissions were highest during curing, while NH3, N2O, and NMVOCs peaked during excavation,…

Composting is widely regarded as an effective method for reducing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock and poultry manure. However, the critical mechanisms of ARGs in different composting phase are still unclear. In this study, normal composting and two types of rapid composting (without mature phase) were used to analyze the removal of ARGs and the succession of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Compared to normal composting, rapid composting reactivated tetracyclines, sulfonamide, and quinolones resistance genes during the maturation phase and reduced the total ARGs removal rates by…
