A 4-kg male child, born at 34 weeks to a gestational diabetic mother, had a large ductus arteriosus aneurysm causing phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerve palsies and large airway compression. The right and left atrial appendages and distal descending aorta were cannulated, allowing left heart partial or complete cardiopulmonary bypass as necessary. On bypass the ductus was ligated, decompressed, and oversewn but not excised. Examination 1 month later suggested resolution of the recurrent laryngeal palsy and echocardiography showed regression of the aneurysm. Ductus ligation and decompression

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is considered a benign entity and is usually reversible with only medical management, but persistent neurologic deficits and disability or death can occur without adequate treatment. Favorable outcomes have been associated with surgical decompression in malignant-type PRES in which hemorrhagic transformation or brain stem compression has developed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we report a case of malignant PRES in a 61-year-old female of Asian descent in which the disease rapidly progressed to coma and a near-fatal condition with uncal

Endoscopic surgery of the cervical spine is constantly evolving and the spectrum of its indications has expanded in recent decades. Full-endoscopic techniques have standardized the procedures for posterior and anterior access. The full-endoscopic approach was developed to treat degenerative diseases with the least possible invasion and without causing instability of the cervical spine. The posterior full-endoscopic approach is indicated for the treatment of diseases of the lateral part of the vertebral segment, such as herniations and stenoses of the lateral recess and vertebral foramen. There

BACKGROUND: There is no standard timing for switching to surgical management for children with adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) who initially receive conservative treatment. We hypothesized that an increased gastrointestinal drainage volume may indicate the need for surgical intervention.
METHODS: The study population included 150 episodes in the patients less than 20 years of age who received treatment for ASBO in our department from January 2008 to August 2019. Patients were divided into two groups: the successful conservative treatment group (CT) and the eventual surgical treatment

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes significant changes in myocardial function, which is represented by ECG and echocardiographic changes. We intended to study the effect of surgical decompression on these changes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited adult TBI patients undergoing surgery within 48 h of injury. Preoperatively, the patient's demographic and clinical details were recorded. ECG and TTE were performed before surgery and 24 h later (first postoperative day [POD1]). ECG was analyzed for heart rate, PR, QRS, and QTc intervals, morphologic end-repolarization abnormalities

This retrospective study summarizes our experience based on treating 62 patients with trigeminal neuralgia treated with microvascular decompression. All patients had typical trigeminal neuralgia symptoms, with 24 of them (38%) having failed to benefit from other previous treatment paradigms. We excluded subjects with atypical and/or secondary forms of trigeminal neuralgia. Follow-up duration ranged from 5 months to 10 years 6 months, with recurrence being identified in three patients (4.8%).We found that the superior cerebellar artery is the leading offending vessel in our cases (33.9%; 21 pat

BACKGROUND: The role and timing of surgical decompression for SCI remains controversial, when the surgical outcomes are evaluated only by neurologic recovery. Other than neurologic deficits, severe pain after SCI is a significant problem, deteriorating the patient's activity of daily living. In the present report, allodynia of patients' upper limbs caused by cervical SCI was treated successfully by surgical decompression.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Three male patients received cervical SCI through minor accidents. They complained of allodynia and motor dysfunction at the spinal level compressed by pr

BACKGROUND: Common fibular (peroneal) nerve (CFN) entrapment is the most frequent nerve entrapment in the lower extremity. It can cause pain, sensory abnormalities, and reduced ability to dorsiflex the foot or a drop foot. A simple test to assist with diagnosis of CFN entrapment is described as an adjunctive clinical tool for the diagnosis of CFN entrapment and also as a predictor of successful surgical decompression of a CFN entrapment.
METHODS: The test, a lidocaine injection into the peroneus longus muscle at the site of a common fibular nerve entrapment, was studied retrospectively in 21
