Is there a relationship between delta sleep at night and afternoon cerebral blood flow, assessed by HMPAO-SPECT in depressed patients and normal control subjects? Preliminary data.

We wished to explore the relationships between waking HMPAO uptake and visually scored polysomnography. We hypothesized that HMPAO activity would correlate positively with slow wave sleep measures the same night. Eight unmedicated unipolar patients with current DSM-IV major depression (17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score 21.5+/-2.9) and seven control subjects received polysomnography on 2 consecutive nights. On the afternoon following the adaptation night, subjects received cerebral SPECT, with 15 mCi Tc-99m-HMPAO injected while subjects performed the Continuous Performance Task. Pa

Abnormal Coupling Between Default Mode Network and Delta and Beta Band Brain Electric Activity in Psychotic Patients.

Common-phase synchronization of neuronal oscillations is a mechanism by which distributed brain regions can be integrated into transiently stable networks. Based on the hypothesis that schizophrenia is characterized by deficits in functional integration within neuronal networks, this study aimed to explore whether psychotic patients exhibit differences in brain regions involved in integrative mechanisms. We report an electroencephalography (EEG)-informed functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis of eyes-open resting-state data collected from patients and healthy controls at two study site

Seizure activity in pyridoxine-deficient adult rats.

This investigation tested the hypothesis that the degree of pyridoxine depletion rather than the status of neuronal maturity determines seizure proneness in the pyridoxine-deficient rat. Dietary pyridoxine deficiency was induced in neuronally mature rats. Seizure activity was monitored using computerized EEG analysis. Dietary pyridoxine deficiency of 10 weeks' duration induced in neuronally mature rats led to spontaneous convulsive seizure activity. Even moderately pyridoxine-deficient adult rats (on the deficient diet for less than 8 weeks) exhibited seizure-like diffuse spike and wave activi

Cardiac outcome in classic infantile Pompe disease after 13 years of treatment with recombinant human acid alpha-glucosidase.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac failure is the main cause of death in untreated classic infantile Pompe disease, an inheritable metabolic myopathy characterized by progressive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Since the introduction of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), survival has increased significantly due to reduced cardiac hypertrophy and improved cardiac function. However, little is known about ERT's long-term effects on the heart. METHODS: Fourteen patients were included in this prospective study. Cardiac dimensions, function, conduction and rhythm disturbances were evaluated at baseline and at regular

The Impact of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Functional Connectivity in Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder Evaluated by Directed Transfer Function and Indices Based on Graph Theory.

The objective of this work was to study the impact of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) on the EEG connectivity evaluated by indices based on graph theory, derived from Directed Transfer Function (DTF), in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) or with bipolar disorder (BD). The results showed the importance of beta and gamma rhythms. The indices density, degree and clustering coefficient increased in MDD responders in beta and gamma bands after rTMS. Interestingly, the density and the degree changed in theta band in both groups of nonresponders (decreased in MDD nonre

Successful radiofrequency ablation of a true paraHissian accessory pathway.

Radiofrequency catheter ablation seems to become a first-line therapy for patients with paroxysmal tachycardias using an accessory pathway. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman who suffered from drug-resistant recurrent reciprocating tachycardia, using an uncommon accessory pathway. The 12-lead electrocardiogram in sinus rhythm showed the following characteristics: a positive delta waves in leads I, II, aVL, aVF, QRS axis = 0 degrees, R/S in lead V1 < 1, and a special QRS pattern in the precordial leads (QS or Qr in V1-V3 and QRS transition > V3). A deep septal parahissian accessory pathw

Comparative Electrocorticographic Signatures of S‑Ketamine and Racemic Ketamine in the Rat Visual Cortex Across Temporal Phases.

Ketamine enantiomers differ neurophysiologically, yet their specific influence on sensory cortical oscillations remains unclear. Characterizing the electrophysiological signatures of S-ketamine (KS) versus racemic ketamine (KSR) in the visual cortexa region highly sensitive to NMDA blockadecan improve understanding of enantiomer-specific neural modulation and anesthetic depth. This study compared the temporal dynamics of cortical oscillations induced by KS and KSR in rat visual cortices during dissociative anesthesia. Adult Wistar rats received KS (50 mg/kg), KSR (50 mg/kg), or saline. Visua

A pilot study of inter-regional phase amplitude coupling as comorbid depression biomarker in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with depression, but the neurobiological mechanisms underlying their bidirectional relationship remain unclear. Phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) refers to the interaction between the phase of low-frequency oscillations and the amplitude of high-frequency oscillations within the same brain signal, reflecting coordination between different brain rhythms for communication and cognitive processes. While prior studies, including our own, have explored PAC within individual brain regions, inter-regional PAC (irPAC) has not been studied in TLE and comorbid dep

Abnormalities of resting-state EEG in patients with prodromal and overt dementia with Lewy bodies: Relation to clinical symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Here we tested if cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms may differ in sub-groups of patients with prodromal and overt dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) as a function of relevant clinical symptoms. METHODS: We extracted clinical, demographic and rsEEG datasets in matched DLB patients (N = 60) and control Alzheimer's disease (AD, N = 60) and healthy elderly (Nold, N = 60) seniors from our international database. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources. RESULTS: As compared to the Nold group, the DLB and AD groups generally e

Sleep stage-specific effects of 0.75 Hz phase-synchronized rTMS and tACS on delta frequency activity during sleep.

Slow oscillatory activity during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep plays a crucial role in both physical health and cognitive functions. Enhancing slow oscillatory activity during sleep has the potential to benefit these domains, yet an optimal stimulation protocol has not been established. This study aimed to investigate whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), synchronized with the trough phase of 0.75 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate EEG activity in the delta frequency range during sleep and enhance cognitive functions. Healthy adults

Changes in cortical delta power during chronic invasive epilepsy monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Cortical delta band (1-4 Hz) activity is considered a biomarker for states of altered consciousness, with increased delta power observed during anesthesia, sleep, coma, and delirium. The current study sought to characterize delta power following electrode implantation with respect to patient demographics and clinical characteristics as well as type and duration of surgery. METHODS: Participants were 25 adult neurosurgical patients implanted with intracranial electrodes for clinical monitoring of their epilepsy. Resting state cortical activity was recorded at multiple occasions over

Neurophysiological characterization of high-dose magnetic seizure therapy: comparisons with electroconvulsive shock and cognitive outcomes.

Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is under development as a means of improving cognitive outcomes with convulsive therapy through achieving better control over therapeutic seizure induction than is possible with conventional electroconvulsive therapy. In this investigation, we present the first neurophysiological characterization of high-dose MST (HD-MST, 6x seizure threshold) to see if a higher dose that is often used in human trials retains differential expression relative to electroconvulsive shock (ECS) and to explore the relationship between seizure expression and cognitive outcomes. Delta EEG activity as a marker of dysfunctional linguistic processing in developmental dyslexia.

The present study used delta EEG band to test the hypothesis of a cerebral maturational delay and a functional altered cerebral asymmetry for phonological processing in dyslexic children. A group of 14 children with dyslexia and 28 matched controls participated in a linguistic paradigm in which the same words were processed in three tasks: phonological, semantic, and orthographic. Delta amplitude was computed as an index of cortical inhibition in four different phases of word processing. In anterior sites, controls showed left activation (reduced delta) during the phonological task and bilater

Temporal intermittent rhythmic delta activity in electroencephalograms.

Temporal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (TIRDA) has been reported to be highly specific for diagnosing complex partial epilepsy. Of 12,198 electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings performed at the Mayo Clinic between May 1, 1990 and May 1, 1991, 33 records from 27 patients (18 women and nine men; mean age, 41.5 years; range, 13-82 years) showed TIRDA. Clinical seizures were diagnosed in all patients, and complex partial epilepsy was well documented in 23. In a control group of 100 patients without TIRDA and matched for age and sex, generalized seizures were diagnosed in 25 and partial se

Accelerated Aging Characterizes the Early Stage of Alzheimer's Disease.

For Alzheimer's disease (AD), aging is the main risk factor, but whether cognitive impairments due to aging resemble early AD deficits is not yet defined. When working with mouse models of AD, the situation is just as complicated, because only a few studies track the progression of the disease at different ages, and most ignore how the aging process affects control mice. In this work, we addressed this problem by comparing the aging process of PS2APP (AD) and wild-type (WT) mice at the level of spontaneous brain electrical activity under anesthesia. Using local field potential recordings, obta

[Acute Trypanosoma brucei gambiense meningoencephalitis detected by papillary edema].

A 26 year old woman, living in Brazzaville, was referred by her ophthalmologist about papillo-oedema. Neurological examination showed frontal syndrome and papillo-oedema without another sign of intracranial hypertension. Electroencephalogram revealed bilateral delta waves and bifrontal points. Significant inflammatory syndrome was noted. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed trypanosomes with an elevated rate of protein and cells. Treatment by tetracosactide and eflornithine gave a good recovery. Authors are stressing the disconcerting feature of this clinical form. An urban from of the disea

Clinical significance of diffuse delta EEG activity in chronic schizophrenia.

1) Forty-three chronic schizophrenics with diffuse delta activity (DDA) in their rest-awake EEGs were compared with 23 chronic schizophrenics with normal EEGs. 2) The DDA group was divided into three sub-groups according to the temporal persistence of DDA: brief, intermittent, and prolonged. The intermittent DDA is analogous to intermittent rhythmic delta activity (IRDA). 3) The disorganized type of schizophrenia was frequent in the DDA group and the residual type was frequent in the normal EEG group. 4) The doses of neuroleptics, as well as those of phenothiazines and butyrophenones, were hig

Characterisation of ictal and interictal states of epilepsy: A system dynamic approach of principal dynamic modes analysis.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterised by the recurrent and unpredictable interruptions of normal brain function, called epileptic seizures. The present study attempts to derive new diagnostic indices which may delineate between ictal and interictal states of epilepsy. To achieve this, the nonlinear modeling approach of global principal dynamic modes (PDMs) is adopted to examine the functional connectivity of the temporal and frontal lobes with the occipital brain segment using an ensemble of paediatric EEGs having the presence of epileptic seizure. The distinct spectral characteristics of

His bundle recordings in a case of complete atrioventricular block combined with pre-excitation syndrome.

In a patient with complete A-V block suffering from attacks of dizziness an intermittent A-V conduction with a short P-R interval and a delta wave of the conducted ventricular complex were observed. After accelerating the sinus rate by atropine and by exercise, one-to-one conduction was established with QRS complexes of WPW type A configuration. His bundle recordings revealed a complete block within the normal conduction system at the level of the A-V node. A slow junctional rhythm with a normal H-V interval was activating the ventricle. During atrial pacing a one-to-one conduction through an

Cortical hypoactivation during resting EEG suggests central nervous system pathology in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

We investigated central fatigue in 50 patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and 50 matched healthy controls (HC). Resting state EEG was collected from 19 scalp locations during a 3 min, eyes-closed condition. Current densities were localized using exact low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA). The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) were administered to all participants. Independent t-tests and linear regression analyses were used to evaluate group differences in current densities, followed by statistical non-parametric mapping (S
