Review of eosinophilic oesophagitis in children and young people.

Eosinophilic oesophagitis is a relapsing inflammatory disorder involving oesophagus identified over 30 years ago. Diagnosis is made by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and oesophageal biopsies. There is huge variation in management practices across the globe. Therapeutic options include the use of proton pump inhibitors, topical steroids, and elimination diet. Biologics and immunomodulator drugs are being explored but not yet recommended in children. Long-term treatment may be required to control symptoms and to prevent complications such as fibrosis/stricture.Conclusion: Even though clinician

"But we're not hypochondriacs": the changing shape of gluten-free dieting and the contested illness experience.

"Gluten free" exploded onto the American foodscape in recent years: as of January 2013, 30 percent of U.S. adults reported reducing or eliminating gluten in their diets. How do individuals participate in the expansion of gluten-free dieting, and what are the implications of that expansion? This article is based on 31 in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted between May and October 2012 with gluten-free and -restricted persons. I identify three interrelated factors contributing to the expansion of gluten-free dieting among non-celiacs. Participants broaden the lay understanding of gluten-

Dietary replacement in preschool-aged hyperactive boys.

A 10-week study was conducted in which all food was provided for the families of 24 hyperactive preschool-aged boys whose parents reported the existence of sleep problems or physical signs and symptoms. A within-subject crossover design was used, and the study was divided into three periods: a baseline period of 3 weeks, a placebo-control period of 3 weeks, and an experimental diet period of 4 weeks. The experimental diet was broader than those studied previously in that it eliminated not only artificial colors and flavors but also chocolate, monosodium glutamate, preservatives, caffeine, and

Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) Supplementation during Pregnancy Influences Insulin Sensitivity in Rabbit Does but Not in Their Offspring.

This study investigated the effects of Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) dietary supplementation during pregnancy on insulin sensitivity of rabbit does and their offspring. Starting from two months before the artificial insemination, 75 New Zealand White does were fed only commercial standard diet (C) or supplemented with 1% (G1) and 3% (G3) of Goji berries. Their offspring received a standard diet but kept the nomenclature of the mother's group. Fasting and intravenous glucose tolerance test-derived indices were estimated at 21 days of pregnancy on rabbit does and at 90 days of age on the offsprin

Effect of chronic ethanol consumption on protective T-helper 1 and T-helper 2 immune responses against the parasites Leishmania major and Strongyloides stercoralis in mice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption has been associated with significant increases in the prevalence of infectious diseases, and it has been suggested that these increases are caused by a direct effect of ethanol on the immune response. The objective of this study was to determine whether chronic ethanol consumption would affect the development of protective immunity to Leishmania major, which is controlled by the T-helper 1 (Th1) subset of CD4 cells, and Strongyloides stercoralis, which is controlled by the Th2 subset. METHODS: Mice were fed ethanol-containing liquid diet (25% ethanol-de

INDUCED PROCTOCOLITIS - ORAL FOOD CHALLENGE SHOULD BE DONE TO CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS OF COW'S MILK ALLERGY IN NEONATES?

BACKGROUND: Suspicion of food protein-induced proctocolitis based on empirical understanding of rectal bleeding can lead to misdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: to verify clinical and evaluative characteristics of patients who presented neonatal rectal bleeding and were on a restricted cow's milk diet. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study included patients followed up in a tertiary care center, who presented rectal bleeding in the neonatal period. The analyzed data included gender, gestational age, type of delivery, use of antibiotics during the last trimester of pregnancy, use of parenteral n

Severe osteomalacia presenting with multiple vertebral fractures: a case report and review of the literature.

Adequate exposure to sunlight and fortification of dairy products with vitamin D have eliminated vitamin D deficiency secondary to inadequate endogenous production or nutrition in the majority of countries. Insufficient vitamin D intake secondary to using unfortified foods and social customs (such as avoiding sun exposure), however, contribute to the development of disease. Poor diet, a lack of sun exposure, and the age related decline in the dermal synthesis of 7-dehydrocholesterol are among the factors that predispose to vitamin D deficiency and consequent bone disease. Here, we present a ca

Refection in rats fed on a sucrose-based, riboflavin-deficient diet.

1. Refection, resulting in an increased supply of riboflavin to riboflavin-deficient rats through coprophagy, was demonstrated on a sucrose-based diet when sensitive biochemical tests of riboflavin status were employed: these included measurements of NAD(P)H2:glutathione oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.4.2); succinate:(acceptor) oxidoreductase (EC 1.3.99.1) and NADH:(acceptor) oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.99.3). 2. The use of tail-cups to eliminate coprophagy, and hence refection, resulted in a more rapid and reproducible progress into severe deficiency. 3. The occurrence of refection on a sucrose-based diet

Assessment of interleukin-12, gamma interferon, and tumor necrosis factor alpha secretion in sera from mice fed with dietary lipids during different stages of Listeria monocytogenes infection.

Recent experimental observations have determined that long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids suppress immune functions and are involved in the reduction of infectious disease resistance. BALB/c mice were fed for 4 weeks with one of four diets containing either olive oil (OO), fish oil (FO), hydrogenated coconut oil, or a low fat level. Interleukin-12p70 (IL-12p70), gamma interferon (IFN-gamma), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) production in the sera of mice fed these diets and challenged with Listeria monocytogenes were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Dietary analysis in symptomatic patients with coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet: the role of trace amounts of gluten and non-gluten food intolerances.

BACKGROUND: Whereas many people with coeliac disease (CD) are asymptomatic when consuming a gluten-free diet (GFD), a proportion continues to experience symptoms. The reasons for this are unclear. METHODS: Thirty-nine adult members of The Coeliac Society of New South Wales, all of whom had persistent gastrointestinal symptoms despite adhering to a GFD, were evaluated. Dietary analysis indicated that 22 (56%) were consuming a GFD as defined by the WHO/FAO Codex Alimentarius (Codex-GFD), in which foods containing up to 0.3% of protein from gluten-containing grains can be labelled as 'gluten fre

Proctocolitis in breast fed infants: a contribution to differential diagnosis of haematochezia in early childhood.

Dietary protein induced proctocolitis in exclusively breast fed infants is rarely taken into consideration as a cause of rectal bleeding or blood streaked stool in the neonatal period and early infancy. Eleven babies are presented in whom it is believed that bleeding through the rectum was due to proctocolitis as a result of allergy triggered by cows' milk protein transferred to the infants via the breast milk. Colonoscopy was performed in five infants, revealing benign eosinophilic proctocolitis. Standard treatment was the exclusion of the allergen from the mother's diet. Resolution of visibl

Diet and supplementation as an element supporting the treatment of endometriosis - literature review.

Endometriosis is a chronic estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease affecting about 10% of women of reproductive age. Pharmacotherapy and surgery form the basis of treatment, but emerging evidence points towards the potential role of diet as an adjunct. The paper presents the pathophysiological basis of nutritional intervention in endometriosis, including chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and disturbances in estrogen metabolism related to the functioning of the intestinal microbiota and the estrobolome. The nutritional model based on an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, c

Feeding Drosophila a biotin-deficient diet for multiple generations increases stress resistance and lifespan and alters gene expression and histone biotinylation patterns.

Energy restriction increases stress resistance and lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and other species. The roles of individual nutrients in stress resistance and longevity are largely unknown. The vitamin biotin is a potential candidate for mediating these effects, given its known roles in stress signaling and gene regulation by epigenetic mechanisms, i.e. biotinylation of histones. Here, we tested the hypothesis that prolonged culture of Drosophila on biotin-deficient (BD) medium increases stress resistance and lifespan. Flies were fed a BD diet for multiple generations; controls were fed

[Adenyl cyclase activity in the tissues and excretion of cyclic adenosine monophosphate in experimental arteriosclerosis].

The activity of adenylcyclase in the tissues and the elimination of 3',5'-AMP with urine were studied in rabbits and rats with experimentally induced atherosclerosis. The relationship between the concentration of steroid hormones and the activity of adenylcyclase in the adrenals was studied after varying periods of atherogenic diets. The activity of adenylcyclase was shown to decrease in the liver and the adrenal glands, as well as the concentration of corticosterone in the adrenals and the urine excretion of 3',5'-AMP, when the animals were kept on the atherogenic diet for long periods of tim

Infant Reflux Trial: study protocol for a multicentre randomized controlled trial on the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in infants.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition in infants below 1 year of age. Symptoms include frequent regurgitation, failure to thrive, food refusal, irritability, and back arching. While many infants experience some degree of physiological reflux, persistent or severe symptoms may indicate GERD. One important underlying cause of GERD in infants is allergy to cow's milk protein. Current international guidelines recommend a trial of a cow's milk protein-free diet prior to initiating medical therapy with a proton-pump inhibitor. However, the efficacy of both the diet

Effect of high-dose intravenous ascorbic acid on cancer patients following ketogenic diet.

BACKGROUND: The role of ascorbic acid in cancer therapy is mainly due to its structural similarity with glucose. When supplemented intravenously in high dose, ascorbic acid can get into the cancer cells and induce apoptosis by causing mitochondrial damage. AIM: The aim was to study the efficacy of high-dose intravenous (IV) ascorbic acid as monotherapy in cancer patients following ketogenic diet and its role in improving the quality of life. RESULTS: C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESRs) were considered as parameters to determine the efficacy of the treatment, a

Research Note: Phosphorus digestibility in conventional canola meal determined using different balance assays.

Three experiments were conducted to determine ileal P digestibility and excreta P retention values for canola meal (CM) using 3 different types of balance assays. The first experiment was an ad libitum-fed chick experiment which evaluated the effect of phytase on ileal P digestibility and excreta P retention values. Chicks were fed a P-deficient cornstarch-dextrose-45% CM basal diet (0.13% nonphytate P) as diet 1 or that diet plus 125 or 250 FTU/kg of phytase, respectively, from 8 to 21 D of age. The digestibility/retention of P was 38% and phytase linearly increased both ileal digestibility a
