Pudendal neuropathy and severity of incontinence but not presence of an anal sphincter defect may determine the response to biofeedback therapy in fecal incontinence.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested that the severity of fecal incontinence, the presence of pudendal neuropathy, or an external anal sphincter defect does not preclude clinical improvement with biofeedback therapy. A discrepancy, however, is frequently found between subjective improvement and objective results after biofeedback therapy. Our aim was to assess whether severity of fecal incontinence, presence of pudendal neuropathy, or an external anal sphincter defect could influence the results of manometric parameters after biofeedback therapy in patients with fecal incontinence. METHODS: Biofeed…

Association Between Constipation and Fecal Incontinence in Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: With a close relation between constipation and fecal incontinence, constipation is thought to be a risk factor for fecal incontinence in older adults. However, the limited number of studies available have provided inconsistent results. We conducted a large-sample population-based study to evaluate the association between constipation and fecal incontinence. DESIGN: Cross-sectional community-based survey. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Independent community-dwelling older adults in Japan ≥75 years of age in 2023 who were not using laxatives, enemas, or undergoing fecal disimpaction. M…

[Sacral Neuromodulation for Fecal Incontinence and Constipation: Evidence, Programming and Long-term Management].

BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has established its role in the treatment of functional pelvic organ-/pelvic floor disorders. Even though the mode of action is not fully understood, SNM has become the preferred surgical treatment of fecal incontinence. METHODS AND RESULTS: A literature search was carried out on programming sacral neuromodulation and long-term outcomes in treating fecal incontinence and constipation.Sacral neuromodulation was found to be successful in the long term. Over the years, the spectrum of indications has expanded, and now includes p…
