Loneliness and secure firearm storage: findings from a national sample of low-income US military veterans.

BACKGROUND: Military veterans are a population that is disproportionately exposed to loneliness and firearm suicide in the USA. While some studies have begun to identify loneliness as a psychological factor related to unsecured firearm storage (ie, storing firearms loaded and/or unlocked) among the general population, little is known about how loneliness may relate to firearm storage practices among veterans. METHODS: Data were from firearm-owning veterans who participated in the 2025 wave of the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences study, a national survey of veterans livi…

Early exposure: rising assault-related firearm injuries in school-aged children during COVID years.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries have become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among pediatric patients in the United States, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating this alarming trend. However, a knowledge gap persists regarding firearm injury trends and intent by age group. This study analyzes fatal and non-fatal pediatric firearm injuries using data from the Trauma Quality Programs (TQP) Participant Use File (PUF) from 2017 to 2022. Cases were categorized into four age groups: 0–5 years, 6–11 years, 12–14 years, and 15–17 years. RESULTS: Of the 32,931 cases identified, 12,647 occurred

Dual pandemic of firearm injury and COVID-19 in Central and Southeastern Ohio: An interrupted time series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Firearm injuries increased as the United States faced the onset and first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, a phenomenon some refer to as the "dual pandemic." Across the country, evidence suggests regional firearm injury rates and related mechanisms behind trends in firearm injury during this time differ, presumably according to local context. This study examines how one regional trauma system fared during the dual pandemic and explores potential explanatory mechanisms of the surge of firearm injuries during the COVID-19 period. METHODS: We used an interrupted time series model

Interhospital Variation in Operative Intervention for Firearm-Related Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury and Associations With Inpatient Mortality.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Firearm-related penetrating traumatic brain injury (pTBI) carries a high mortality risk and grim prognosis. This study aimed to quantify interhospital variation in operative intervention for this patient population and assess whether cranial surgery tendency is associated with inpatient mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) data set to identify adult patients presenting with firearm-related pTBI. Risk-adjusted hierarchical regression evaluated associations with c

Victims and Violence: Childhood Maltreatment, Neighborhood Safety Concerns, and Firearm-Involved Violence in Violently Injured Patients.

Firearm-involved aggression remains a persistent public health issue in the United States. Childhood maltreatment and exposure to community violence are known risk factors for violent behavior. Yet, little research has looked at the link between childhood maltreatment and firearm-involved violence perpetration in adulthood. This study examined the relationship between five types of childhood maltreatment (i.e., emotional abuse and neglect, physical abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse) and firearm violence perpetration and the potential moderating effect of neighborhood safety concerns in a hig

Effect of Veteran-Focused Suicide Prevention Public Messaging on Help-Seeking Behavior and Secure Firearm Storage.

Suicide is a major public health concern in the United States. Veterans are among those at higher risk for death by suicide. Firearm ownership is one factor that contributes to veterans' elevated suicide risk. The current study sought to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based, multi-media advertising campaign with a specific focus on veterans related to secure storage of firearms and general help-seeking attitudes during a mental health crisis. Results indicated positive changes in (a) attitudes toward seeking help from a health care provider or a friend/loved one during a mental hea…

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Virtual Reality Curriculum to Support Firearm Safety Counseling Skills Among Pediatric Residents.

Background Firearm-related injury is the leading cause of death among US children and adolescents. Residents across specialties report low preparedness to provide firearm safety counseling. Virtual reality (VR) may offer a modality to support residents' skills through deliberate practice in a simulated setting. Objective To describe a novel screen-based VR curriculum on firearm safety counseling and report feasibility and acceptability outcomes, including residents' perceptions. Methods Fifteen senior pediatric residents were recruited from 2 large children's hospitals. The curriculum included

Localization of a Bullet in a Firearm Injury Victim Using X-ray Imaging During Autopsy: A Case Report.

Firearm injuries can result in varying degrees of trauma, depending on factors such as the type of firearm, range, and wound location. This case report presents the role of X-ray imaging in detecting a projectile causing fatal penetrating abdominal trauma in a 45-year-old male. The patient was found with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, and despite medical interventions, he succumbed to his injuries. X-ray imaging revealed a hyper-dense area resembling a bullet lodged in the abdominal cavity. Autopsy confirmed a close-range gunshot with significant internal damage to the peritoneum, mesentery,

Pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries: literature review, best practices in medical and surgical management, and case report.

INTRODUCTION: Civilian craniocerebral firearm injuries are extremely lethal. Management includes aggressive resuscitation, early surgical intervention when indicated, and management of intracranial pressure. Patient neurological status and imaging features should be used to guide management and the degree of intervention. Pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries have a higher survival rate, but are much rarer, especially in children under 15 years old. This paucity of data underscores the importance of reviewing pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries to determine best practices in surgical

Lifetime Risk of Death From Firearm Injuries, Drug Overdoses, and Motor Vehicle Accidents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: News media and policy makers frequently discuss deaths from firearms, drug overdoses, and motor vehicle accidents. However, this information is generally presented as absolute numbers or annual rates. Cumulative lifetime risk may be an additional useful metric for understanding the impact of these causes of death. METHODS: Data on all-cause firearm, drug overdose, and motor vehicle accident deaths were obtained from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the year 2018. Age-specific death rates were used to estimate the cumulative risk of firearm, drug overdose…

Multilevel Associations Between Outlet Characteristics, Contextual Factors and Firearm Violence at On-Premise Alcohol Outlets in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Firearm violence is a major public health concern in the United States (US). Alcohol use and features of the alcohol environment, including outlet type and alcohol control policies, are factors known to increase the risk of firearm violence. On-premise alcohol outlets, where alcohol is sold and consumed on site, may influence firearm violence risk through modifications in the physical environment, social processes and policy contexts. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study examining the association between multilevel characteristics of on-premise alcohol outlets and other
