Petrophysical examination of CO₂-brine-rock interactions-results of the first stage of long-term experiments in the potential Zaosie Anticline reservoir (central Poland) for CO₂ storage.

The objective of the study was determination of experiment-induced alterations and changes in the properties of reservoir rocks and sealing rocks sampled from potential reservoir for CO₂. In the experiment, rocks submerged in brine in specially constructed reactors were subjected to CO₂ pressure of 6 MPa for 20 months at room temperature. Samples of Lower Jurassic reservoir rocks and sealing rocks (sandstones, claystones, and mudstones) from the Zaosie Anticline (central Poland) were analysed for their petrophysical properties (specific surface area, porosity, pore size and distribution) befor

Impact of forestry on total and methyl-mercury in surface waters: distinguishing effects of logging and site preparation.

Forestry operations can increase the export of mercury (both total and methyl) to surface waters. However, little is known about the relative contribution of different forestry practices. We address this question using a paired-catchment study that distinguishes the effects of site preparation from the antecedent logging. Runoff water from three catchments, two harvested and one untreated control, was sampled biweekly during one year prior to logging, two years after logging, and three years after site preparation. The logging alone did not significantly increase the concentrations of either t

Metal complexation properties of freshwater dissolved organic matter are explained by its aromaticity and by anthropogenic ligands.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface waters affects the fate and environmental effects of trace metals. We measured variability in the Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn affinity of 23 DOM samples isolated by reverse osmosis from freshwaters in natural, agricultural, and urban areas. Affinities at uniform pH and ionic composition were assayed at low, environmentally relevant free Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn activities. The C-normalized metal binding of DOM varied 4-fold (Cu) or about 10-fold (Cd, Ni, Zn) among samples. The dissolved organic carbon concentration ranged only 9-fold in the waters, illustrating that

Assessment of pesticide residues in freshwater areas affected by rice paddy effluents in Southern Japan.

Pesticide residues in five freshwater areas that are directly affected by rice paddy effluents in southern Japan were measured to determine their maximum concentrations and temporal variations. Water samples were collected every week during the 2005 rice planting season in Kagoshima Prefecture and stations were established in Amori River, Sudo River, Nagaida River (that drains into the bigger Kotsuki River), rice paddy drainage canal, and wastewater reservoir (that collects effluents from rice paddy fields). Of the 14 target pesticides examined, a total of 11 were detected in all stations. Mef

Optimization of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the selective determination of trace amounts of palladium by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy.

A new simple and reliable method for rapid and selective extraction and determination of the trace levels of Pd(2+) ion was developed by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction preconcentration and flame atomic absorption spectrometry detection. In the proposed approach, thioridazine HCl (TRH) was used as a Pd(2+) ion selective complexing agent. The effective parameters on the extraction recovery were studied and optimized utilizing two decent optimization methods; factorial design and central composite design (CCD). Through factorial design the best efficiency of extraction acquired using et

Assessing the stability of mercury and methylmercury in a varved lake sediment deposit.

Using lake sediments to infer past total mercury and methylmercury loading to the environment requires that diagenetic processes within the sediment do not significantly affect the concentrations or net accumulation rates of the mercury species. Because carbon is lost during early sediment diagenesis, the close link between carbon and mercury raises the question of how reliable lake sediments are as archives of total mercury and methylmercury loading. In this study we used a series of freeze cores taken in a lake with varved (annually laminated) sediment to assess the stability of total mercur

Application of the biotic ligand model for regulatory purposes to selected rivers in Argentina with extreme water-quality characteristics.

The biotic ligand model (BLM) was used to assess copper (Cu) bioavailability, toxicity, water-effect ratios (WER), and Cu site-specific water-quality criteria (SSWQC) in the Matanza River and Pilcomayo River, Argentina, where anthropogenic inputs and natural phenomena have led to high concentrations of chemical species capable of reducing metal toxicity: Sodium, total hardness, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon, and suspended particulate matter (SPM), as well as other metals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of developing Cu-SSWQC from a modified scenario of the BLM

Arsenic contamination of groundwater in Nawabganj, Bangladesh, focusing on the relationship with other metals and ions.

Serious arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh has been frequently reported and is of great concern. In this research, repeated water sampling from the same 10 tubewells in Nawabganj municipality, Bangladesh, was conducted and analysed, focusing on the seasonal variation of water quality and the relationship among arsenic and other metals and ions. For the seasonal variation of water quality, arsenic and iron concentrations were higher in the rainy season in general although the tendency was not consistent and it depended on the tubewell and the time. Correlation between arsenic an

Thiobencarb toxicity and plasma AChE inhibition in the European eel.

The acute toxicity of the herbicide thiobencarb (S-4-chlorobenzyl diethylthiocarbamate) was determined for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours median lethal concentrations (LC50) were 25.7, 21.7, 17.0 and 13.2 mg/L, respectively. Fish were also exposed to a sublethal thiobencarb concentration (1/60 LC50-96 hr = 0.22 mg/L) during 96 hours in a flow-through system and then an elimination period of 192 hours in clean water was allowed. Eels were removed and blood samples taken out at each exposure time and recovery period in order to evaluate AChE activity. Thiobenca

Teratogenic effects of selenium in natural populations of freshwater fish.

The prevalence of abnormalities and associated tissue selenium residues were assessed for the fish population of Belews Lake, North Carolina, and two reference lakes in 1975, 1978, 1982, and 1992. Teratogenic defects identified included lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, and head, mouth, and fin deformities. Many fish exhibited multiple malformations and some were grossly deformed and distorted in appearance. Other abnormalities observed were edema, exophthalmus, and cataracts. Whole-body tissue residues of selenium in the fishes of Belews Lake were up to 130 times those in the reference lakes and

Temporal and spatial variation in temperature and oxygen at the microscale: key niche axes for aquatic life.

To understand animal adaptations, we need accurate estimates of the ecological factors impacting organisms in nature. While temperature is a well-established driver of physiological performance, its effects in aquatic systems are closely linked to water oxygenation. Oxygen levels are expected to differ spatially and fluctuate temporally much more strongly in water than on land, but our understanding of variation in temperature and oxygen levels in freshwaters remains limited. It is essential that environmental variation is recorded at spatial and temporal resolutions relevant to the organism.

Probable Leptospirosis in the Adventure Traveler with Freshwater Exposure: Narrative Review and Case Series.

Leptospirosis is an emerging zoonotic infectious disease in the adventure traveler with recreational freshwater exposure. We describe three cases of probable leptospirosis acquired during whitewater rafting trips in rural Ecuador. Rafting took place following periods of heavy rainfall and flooding of rivers, which are well documented risk factors for leptospirosis. Two of our patients presented to our rapid assessment clinic with acute febrile illness after travel to a region with a confirmed leptospirosis outbreak, while the third patient presented four weeks after a convalescent episode of a

Turbidity drives plasticity in the eyes and brains of an African cichlid.

Natural variation in environmental turbidity correlates with variation in the visual sensory system of many fishes, suggesting that turbidity may act as a strong selective agent on visual systems. Since many aquatic systems experience increased turbidity due to anthropogenic perturbations, it is important to understand the degree to which fish can respond to rapid shifts in their visual environment, and whether such responses can occur within the lifetime of an individual. We examined whether developmental exposure to turbidity (clear, <5 NTU; turbid, ∼9 NTU) influenced the size of morphologic

A new species of tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from the Death Valley ecosystem.

A new tiger beetle species, Cicindela timbisha Duran, Chambers, Nelson & Roman n. sp., of the tribe Cicindelini, is described from the Death Valley ecoregion of eastern California, USA. It is most similar to C. senilis G.Horn, 1866 but is distinguished on the basis of multiple morphological characteristics, including differences in maculations, chaetotaxy of the antennae and a statistically significant difference in body size (P<0.001). The new species also differs from C. senilis in that it is found in an isolated freshwater spring in an inland basin east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where

Transmission Routes and a New Freshwater Crustacean Host for Infectious Precocity Virus (IPV).

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Macrobrachium rosenbergii holds significant importance in aquaculture within tropical and subtropical regions globally. An infection called infectious precocity virus disease (IPVD), caused by infectious precocity virus (IPV), has emerged in M. rosenbergii in China and causes significant economic losses. The diseased M. rosenbergii presents with the characteristics of sexual precocity and slow growth. Elaborating the route of transmission and host range of IPV is necessary to prevent the disease. Transmission of IPV to healthy M. rosenbergii can occur through the ingestion of IPV-infected tiss

Pathology and infectious agents of unionid mussels: A primer for pathologists in disease surveillance and investigation of mortality events.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world, and more than 30 species have gone extinct in the last century. While habitat alteration and destruction have contributed to the declines, the role of disease in mortality events is unclear. In an effort to involve veterinary pathologists in disease surveillance and the investigation of freshwater mussel mortality events, we provide information on the conservation status of unionids, sample collection and processing techniques, and unique and confounding anatomical and physiological differences. We review the pu

Host Developmental Stage Effects on Parasite Resistance and Tolerance.

AbstractHosts can defend themselves against parasites either by preventing or limiting infections (resistance) or by limiting parasite-induced damage (tolerance). However, it remains underexplored how these defense types vary over host development with shifting patterns of resource allocation priorities. Here, we studied the role played by developmental stage in resistance and tolerance in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This anadromous fish has distinct life stages related to living in freshwater and seawater. We experimentally exposed 1-year-old salmon, either at the freshwater stage or at th

Two new genera and one new species of freshwater crabs of the subfamily Pseudothelphusinae (Decapoda: Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from southwestern Mexico.

Two new genera from the Chimalapas region in eastern Oaxaca, and from Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico are presented. Mokayathelphusa angelsotoi n. gen., n. sp., which is described from Oaxaca, is placed in the subfamily Pseudothelphusinae due to the presence of a caudomarginal projection that ends apically in an ornamented plate. Alvarezius n. gen. is erected to accommodate A. zongolicae (Alvarez, Villalobos & Moreno, 2012) n. comb. This species was described in Pseudothelphusa, but a recent molecular phylogenetic analysis based on partial sequences of three genes (COI, 16S and H3) places this spe

Description of one new species of freshwater shrimp of the genus Caridina (Crustacea: Decapoda: Atyidae) from two karst caves of Northern Vietnam.

A new species of atyid freshwater shrimp is described from two caves of Bac Kan Province, Northeast Vietnam, namely Caridina namdat sp. nov. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by a suite of morphological characters such as reduced eyes with short eyestalk, very short and unarmed rostrum, slender second pereiopod, elongated endopod of male first pleopod, and long appendix interna of the male second pleopod. Molecular phylogenetic data from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA genes also support the distinctiveness of the new species from a
