Evaluating referral, screening, and assessment procedures for middle school trauma/grief-focused treatment groups.

There is a need to delineate best practices for referring, assessing, and retaining students suspected of posttraumatic stress (PTS) and maladaptive grief (MG) in school-based treatment. Evidence-based risk-screening procedures should accurately include students who are appropriate for group treatment and exclude students who do not require treatment or who are better served by other forms of intervention and support. We described and evaluated the sequence of steps used to screen 7th- and 8th-grade students (N = 89) referred by school staff as candidates for an open trial of group-based Traum

Complicated Grief Among Military Service Members and Veterans Who Served After September 11, 2001.

Minimal research is available on the prevalence and impact of complicated grief (CG) in military service members and veterans, despite high reported rates of loss in this population. The present study aimed to examine prevalence rates of CG in a sample of treatment-seeking military service and members and veterans who served after September 11, 2001. Additionally, the study aimed to examine characteristics associated with CG as well as the association between CG and quality of life. In a sample of 622 military service members and veterans who served after September 11, 2001, 502 reported a sig

Professional Grief, Burnout and Coping among Neuro-Oncologists: A Cross-Sectional Online Study (PROGRESS).

BACKGROUND: Physicians treating patients with malignant central nervous system tumors frequently experience patient deaths, yet the impact of professional grief on burnout has not been examined in neuro-oncology. This study investigated whether acute grief responses following patient deaths (Short-term Bereavement Reactions, SBR) and long-term changes resulting from cumulative loss exposure (Accumulated Global Changes, AGC) are associated with emotional exhaustion (EE) among neuro-oncologists in Germany, and whether resilience moderates these relationships. METHODS: This cross-sectional study

Feasibility, acceptability and potential effects of internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy for prolonged grief.

The death of a loved one is associated with an increased risk of developing severe mental health complications such as prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Research supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBT), delivered online or face-to-face, in treating post-loss mental health problems. However, evidence-based treatments for bereaved adults remain scarce within the Swedish healthcare system. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of grief-focused internet-delivered CBT (ICBT) for PGD in

Assessing Grief in Cancer Care: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies Using Psychometric Instruments.

Background/Objectives: Grief in cancer patients represents a multidimensional psychological response encompassing anticipatory, existential, and identity-related distress. While the recent literature has examined grief in caregivers, family members, and even healthcare professionals, the psychological grief experienced by patients themselves following a cancer diagnosis remains comparatively understudied and insufficiently characterized in empirical research. This systematic review aims to evaluate observational studies that used validated psychometric instruments to measure grief in adult can

"I would feel misunderstood and diminished:" Perceived helpfulness of a grief diagnosis among grievers.

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was recently added to DSM-5-TR. However, concerns remain about its applicability in various bereaved subgroups. This study examined views toward a grief-related diagnosis among a sample of 755 bereaved adults that was diverse regarding relationship to the deceased and manner of death, with over half having lost a child and 36% meeting PGD criteria. Most were between the ages of 45 and 64 years. The majority (72.2%) rated a grief-related diagnosis as unhelpful, 11.4% rated it as helpful, and 16.4% were unsure. A thematic analysis of responses to an open-ended ques

An Analysis of Factors Predicting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Grief Following Comrade Loss.

This study explored how "inhibiting factors" associated with military-bereavement impact combatants' psychological sequelae following comrade loss. One hundred six eligible Israeli combat male-soldiers completed the Texas-Revised-Inventory of Grief, the post-traumatic-stress-disorder symptoms scale (PSS), the Male Role Norms Scale, the Social Acknowledgment Questionnaire, and a scale assessing Military Encouragement to Grieve (MEG-8). Time since loss had no impact on soldiers' levels of PSS or prolonged grief. Regression analysis indicated that higher masculinity-perception and disapproval fro

Men's grief and support following pregnancy loss: A qualitative investigation of service providers' perspectives.

This study explores service providers' experiences of supporting men following a miscarriage or stillbirth in Australia. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were completed with seven service providers including midwives, grief counselors and social workers. Participants highlighted that, despite the individual nature of men's grief, there is a need to recognize and address the additional expectations and responsibilities that may compound their experience. Within an environment focused on woman-centered care, participants described creative strategies and inclusive language to promote engagem

Psychometric properties of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 (PG-13) in bereaved Swedish parents.

This study aimed to validate the Swedish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13 tool (PG-13) by examining its psychometric properties, including factor structure, discriminant and concurrent validity. The PG-13 was assessed in a sample of Swedish parents who had lost a child to cancer 1-5 years previously. The sample included 225 parents (133 mothers and 92 fathers) with a mean age of 46.02 years (SD = 8.15) and 16.0% met the criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). A principal component analysis was performed, and the results supported a one-factor structure of the PG-13. The PG-13 wa

Prolonged grief: where to after Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although there is much evidence for the construct of prolonged grief, there was much controversy over the proposal to introduce a prolonged grief diagnosis into Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), and it was finally rejected as a diagnosis in DSM-5. This review outlines the evidence for and against the diagnosis, and highlights the implications of the DSM-5 decision. RECENT FINDINGS: Convergent evidence indicates that prolonged grief characterized by persistently severe yearning for the deceased is a distinct construct from bereavemen

One minute of grief: emotional processing in short-term dynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Depth of emotional processing has shown to be related to outcome across approaches to psychotherapy. Moreover, a specific emotional sequence has been postulated and tested in several studies on experiential psychotherapy (Pascual-Leone & Greenberg, 2007). This process-outcome study aims at reproducing the sequential model of emotional processing in psychodynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder and linking these variables with ultimate therapeutic outcome. METHOD: In this study, 32 patients underwent short-term dynamic psychotherapy. On the basis of reliable clinical change st

Factors related to dimensions of grief intensity among African-American women after pregnancy loss.

Grief is a normal response after pregnancy loss. Potentially, prolonged periods of grief can have a negative impact on physical or mental health. African-American women experience pregnancy loss at rates that are at least twice the rate of any other racial or ethnic group. However, the research literature on pregnancy loss has failed to include representative samples of African-American women or to explore and describe adequately their unique experiences after pregnancy loss. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that are related to grief intensity after pregnancy loss (i.e., mi

Beginning counselors' death concerns and empathic responses to client situations involving death and grief.

Beginning counselors' levels of discomfort and ability to respond empathically to clients presenting with death-related issues was investigated. Fifty-eight masters-level counseling students completed the Threat Index and the Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale and viewed a series of 8 videotape vignettes depicting clients with death-related (e.g., grief, AIDS) and non-death-related problems (e.g., marital discord, physical handicap). As hypothesized, significantly higher levels of counselor discomfort were found in responding to client situations involving death and dying, especially when th

A Birth, a Death: The Grief Experiences of Mothers Who Lose One of Their Twins after Birth.

This study explores the unique grief experiences of mothers who have lost one of their babies after a twin pregnancy. It aims to provide an in-depth understanding of their emotions, the challenges they faced, and their coping strategies. The data were analyzed using six-phase thematic analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with seven mothers in Türkiye who experienced this loss. The analysis revealed that mothers experienced an intense emotional duality characterized by simultaneous grief and attachment to the surviving infant. Mothers described feelings of

Conundrums and paradoxes in the pre-death grief experiences of dementia caregivers: A causal loop analysis.

This study examined how caregiver-environment interactions generate pre-death grief experiences in dementia caregiving. While traditionally conceptualized as an individual psychological response, grief may develop through dynamic feedback processes between caregivers and their social contexts. We used causal loop diagramming to map these dynamics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 33 dementia caregivers in Singapore to explore their interactions across multiple social domains. Using purposive text analysis, we created a causal loop diagram showing feedback patterns that either dee

The burden of grief and moral injury in neurosurgery residency compared with other high-risk specialties.

OBJECTIVE: Residents in specialties with frequent exposure to patient death, catastrophic outcomes, and morally complex decisions may be more vulnerable to emotional distress. While burnout is well described in residency training, grief and moral injury remain less explored. This study aimed to examine grief symptoms, moral injury, coping strategies, psychological distress, and perceived program support across neurosurgery and other surgical and acute-care medical specialties. METHODS: A cross-sectional, anonymous, web-based survey of resident physicians and fellows in neurosurgery, general s

Sibling Relationships After the Death of a Parent During Childhood: "Everyone Carries Their Own Grief".

After the death of a parent, children have to adjust to changes in family roles and dynamics as a result of the loss, including the sibling relationship. The current qualitative study explored, using joint interviews with sibling pairs, how adult siblings experienced the death of their parent during childhood and their sibling relationship over time. Thirteen adult siblings from six families reflected upon their loss experiences and how these affected their sibling relationship. Most sibling pairs described a distance directly after parental death, and an alternating pattern of distance and cl
