A variant microcephalic osteodysplastic slender-bone disorder with growth hormone deficiency and a pigmentary retinopathy.

We present the case of a 3-year-old boy with post-natal growth failure, microcephaly, developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, an evolving pigmentary retinopathy, pituitary hypoplasia, micropenis, and growth hormone (GH) deficiency. He has a microcephalic osteodysplastic slender-bone disorder with disharmonic delayed osseous maturation, most closely resembling patients with microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II). Intrauterine growth retardation, a universal finding in the MOPD II, was absent in our patient.

Unusual brain growth patterns in early life in patients with autistic disorder: an MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify developmental abnormalities in cerebral and cerebellar volume in autism. METHODS: The authors studied 60 autistic and 52 normal boys (age, 2 to 16 years) using MRI. Thirty autistic boys were diagnosed and scanned when 5 years or older. The other 30 were scanned when 2 through 4 years of age and then diagnosed with autism at least 2.5 years later, at an age when the diagnosis of autism is more reliable. RESULTS: Neonatal head circumferences from clinical records were available for 14 of 15 autistic 2- to 5-year-olds and, on average, were normal (35.1 +/- 1.3 cm versus c

An autosomal recessive disorder with retardation of growth, mental deficiency, ptosis, pectus excavatum and camptodactyly.

Two strikingly similar brothers issued from consanguineous parents in the second degree present the following patterns of anomalies: retardation of growth, mental deficiency, ocular abnormalities, pectus excavatum and camptodactyly. The ocular abnormalities include ptosis, microphthalmia and hypertelorism. No endocrine or metabolic aberrations were found. The authors conclude that the disorder has probably an autosomal recessive mode of transmission.

A database study of the safety and effectiveness of daily growth hormone in treating more than 80,000 children with growth disorders worldwide: a plain language summary of publication.

Researchers looked at data from the largest and longest-running database of children with growth disorders who were treated with daily injections of a brand of growth hormone called Genotropin. The researchers used these data to better understand the safety and effectiveness of daily growth hormone treatment. Researchers showed that daily growth hormone treatment: ○ Increased the children's heights, measured after 1 year of treatment. This was seen for all of the growth disorders studied. ○ Increased growth in children of different ages, with higher growth seen in children who had begun treatm

Dysregulation of Plasma Growth Factors and Chemokines in Cocaine Use Disorder: Implications for Dual Diagnosis with Schizophrenia and Antisocial Personality Disorder in an Exploratory Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dual diagnosis in individuals with cocaine use disorders (CUDs) presents a mental health challenge marked by an increased susceptibility to disabling morbidities and premature mortality. Despite extensive research on depression and anxiety, other prevalent comorbidities, such as psychotic and personality disorders, have received less attention. This study explores inflammation-related mediators as potential biomarkers for CUD and dual diagnosis with schizophrenia (SCZ) or antisocial personality disorder (APD). METHODS: This exploratory study included 95 participants, comprising

Bacterial siderophore suppresses host genetic disorders of hyperactivated Ras by limiting iron deficiency that inhibits growth factor expression.

Gut bacteria promote host health, but their ability to suppress genetic disorders remains unclear. Ras (gain-of-function, gf) mutations are among the most deleterious genetic alterations, highlighting the importance of identifying bacteria-mediated mechanisms that mitigate hyperactivated Ras effects. Here, we screened all non-essential E. coli gene mutations and identified 151 mutants that mitigate let-60/ras(gf)-induced vulval developmental abnormalities in C. elegans. Notably, bacteria with mutations in genes involved in iron acquisition suppress host ras(gf)-induced vulval defects through e

Accelerating digital health literacy for the treatment of growth disorders: The impact of a massive open online course.

BACKGROUND: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a rare disorder characterized by inadequate secretion of growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary gland. One of the challenges in optimizing GH therapy is improving adherence. Using digital interventions may overcome barriers to optimum treatment delivery. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), first introduced in 2008, are courses made available over the internet without charge to a large number of people. Here, we describe a MOOC aiming to improve digital health literacy among healthcare professionals managing patients with GHD. Based on pr

The study of facial morphology in patients with vertical growth pattern (hyperdivergent) lacking or showing temporomandibular disorders symptoms.

AIM: According to the large number of studies, there seems to be a significant relation between hyperdivergence growth pattern and temporomandibular disorders. However, it is not clearly scrutinized which morphological factors can contribute to the development of temporomandibular disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between some skeletal and facial morphologic features of hyperdivergent facial growth pattern patients and temporomandibular disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study was performed on a population of 50 patients including 25 patients wi

Pathophysiology of growth hormone secretion disorders and their impact on bone microstructure as measured by trabecular bone score.

This article is focused on endocrine-mediated osteoporosis caused by growth hormone (GH) disorders; adult GH deficiency and acromegaly. GH and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) stimulate linear bone growth through complex hormonal interactions and activates epiphyseal prechondrocytes. GH, via receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB (RANK), its ligand (RANK-L), and the osteoprotegerin system, stimulates production of osteoprotegerin and its accumulation in bone matrix. Malfunction of this mechanism, could lead to specific bone impairment. However, the primary problem of bone disease in G

Novel fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) mutations in bladder cancer previously identified in non-lethal skeletal disorders.

Activating mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene are responsible for several autosomal dominant craniosynostosis syndromes and chondrodysplasias i.e. hypochondroplasia, achondroplasia, SADDAN and thanatophoric dysplasia--a neonatal lethal dwarfism syndrome. Recently, activating FGFR3 mutations have also been found to be present in cancer, i.e. at high frequency in carcinoma of the bladder and rarely in multiple myeloma and carcinoma of the cervix. Almost all reported mutations in carcinomas corresponded to the mutations identified in thanatophoric dysplasia. We here

Meanings of recovery and post-traumatic growth in people with lived experience of eating disorders: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Conceptualizations of recovery from an Eating Disorder (ED) have focused traditionally on symptom alleviation and restoration of physical health. In recent years, through patient involvement, this definition has been broadened to incorporate changes in psychological processes and overall wellbeing. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the meanings of recovery among people with lived experience of an ED. Areas of personal growth after the illness were explored, with reference to the theoretical framework of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). METHODS: Nineteen participants (m

A Drosophila model of gestational antimony exposure uncovers growth and developmental disorders caused by disrupting oxidative stress homeostasis.

The toxic heavy metal antimony (Sb) is ubiquitous in our daily lives. Various models have shown that Sb induces neuronal and reproductive toxicity. However, little is known about the developmental toxicity of Sb exposure during gestation and the underlying mechanisms. To study its effects on growth and development, Drosophila stages from eggs to pupae were exposed to different Sb concentrations (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 mg/mL Sb); RNA sequencing was used to identify the underlying mechanism. The model revealed that prenatal Sb exposure significantly reduced larval body size and weight, the pupation
