INTRODUCTION: Goltz's syndrome or focal dermal hypoplasia is an X-linked dominant disease. Patients suffer from cutaneous, bone, dental and ocular disorders. The mutated gene has not been identified.
CASE-REPORT: A 16 month-old girl presented, since her birth, numerous malformations and cutaneous lesions. She had only three toes and three metatarsians on the right foot. The right hand possessed only four fingers but five metacarpiens. No bone abnormality was observed on the left side. Cutaneous lesions were also limited to the right side: linear para-median epidermal hamartoma on the face, se

Fibular aplasia, tibial campomelia, and oligosyndactyly (FATCO) syndrome (MIM 246570) is a rare disorder characterized by specific skeletal findings (fibular aplasia, shortened or bowed tibia, and oligosyndactyly of the foot and/or hand). Typically, no other anomalies, craniofacial dysmorphism, or developmental delays are associated. Here we report three unrelated individuals with limb anomalies consistent with FATCO syndrome who have been followed clinically for 5 years. Genetic testing of previously reported individuals with FATCO syndrome has not revealed a genetic diagnosis. However, no br

The most common toxicity in clinical trials with 5-FU, in mono or polychemotherapy, is stomatitis, diarrhea, hand-foot syndrome. In this case report, the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cardiotoxicity, an uncommon 5-FU-related toxicity, has been investigated. Cardiotoxicity reports are uncommon because the problem is not well known. This study is also a review of the recent literature and it recommend to take care in prescribing chemotherapy to patients with heart disease history.

Feingold syndrome (FS) is a dominantly inherited combination of microcephaly with or without learning disabilities, hand and foot abnormalities, short palpebral fissures and esophageal/duodenal atresia. The syndrome has autosomal dominant inheritance with full penetrance, and variable expressivity. Digital anomalies are almost always present. The gene for FS is localized to a 2.2 cM region in 2p23-p24. We report on the first Turkish family with Feingold syndrome. The propositus is a male infant with microcephaly, frontal balding, brachymesophalangy of the second and fifth fingers, bilateral sy

Ectrodactyly, Ectodermal dysplasia, and Cleft lip-cleft palate (EEC) syndrome is a rare ectodermal dysplasia presenting with various combinations of its three components. It is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable expression and penetrance. Patients have features of ectodermal abnormalities and a split hand/foot deformity of the limbs. We report a case of this rare disorder in a 40-year-old male who had ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, but no clefting of lips or palate.

We present a case of amniotic band syndrome diagnosed with two-dimensional (2D), three-dimensional (3D), and four-dimensional (4D) sonography at 14 weeks and 5 days of gestation. Conventional 2D sonography revealed multiple amniotic bands, fetal acrania, deformed hand, gastroschisis, kyphoscoliosis, and club foot. 3D and 4D sonography revealed multiple amniotic bands swinging in the amniotic cavity with 1 of them attached to the fetal head, and the severe deformity of the fetal face.

The acrocallosal syndrome (ACS) is a probable autosomal recessive condition of macrocephaly, craniofacial and hand and foot abnormalities, absence of the corpus callosum, and mental retardation. This patient had characteristics of the ACS but also had a severe congenital heart defect and other visceral malformations. After comparing the ACS with and contrasting it to other disorders, we concluded that the internal organ abnormalities found in this patient probably represent further manifestations of the ACS.

Modelling the foot-ankle system (FAS) while exposed to foot-transmitted vibration (FTV) is essential for designing inhibition methods to prevent the effects of vibration-induced white-foot. K-means analysis was conducted on a data set containing vibration transmissibility from the floor to 24 anatomical locations on the right foot of 21 participants. The K-means analysis found three locations to be sufficient for summarising the FTV response. A three segment, four degrees-of-freedom lumped parameter model of the FAS was designed to model the transmissibility response at three locations when ex

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is a syndrome characterized by clubbing of the digits of the hand/foot, periosteal reaction and arthralgia or arthritis which is usually secondary to cyanotic congenital heart disease and chronic pulmonary infections. This syndrome rarely occurs in association with chronic liver disease in childhood. Here, we report on a child with biliary atresia who developed arthralgia and arthritis during follow-up and which was diagnosed as hepatic hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. It is emphasized that hypertrophic osteoarthropathy should be considered in the differential diagn

We report on 2 sisters with Karsch-Neugebauer syndrome comprising split foot and split hand anomalies in association with congenital nystagmus. These sisters share a nearly identical phenotype with the 8 previously reported instances of this disorder. Although genetic heterogeneity can not be formally excluded, most evidence suggests that Karsch-Neugebauer syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder. If so, then this report of 2 affected sibs born to healthy parents is the second instance of apparent gonadal mosaicism in this disorder. The apparent high frequency of gonadal mosaicism is importa

An unusual case of a female infant with Catel-Manzke syndrome is presented. Additional features not previously reported include three accessory ossicles at the bases or associated with the proximal phalanx of the index, middle, ring and little fingers bilaterally. There are also numerous bony abnormalities in both feet. Previous cases have shown no more than 2 accessory ossicles in the hand and these usually involve the index alone. The foot abnormalities are more extensive than any previously seen in this syndrome. This is only the 8th female case out of a total of 27 reported cases.

Actin and alpha-actinin immunoreactive sites have been localized at the electron microscope level by the protein A-gold immunocytochemical technique in podocytes of normal and nephrotic rat renal tissues. In normal renal glomeruli, fibrillar networks located in the core of foot processes or bundles of microfilaments interconnecting them were found to be labelled for these two cytoskeletal proteins. On the other hand, in nephrotic renal glomeruli, concomitant with the loss of podocytic foot processes a reorganization of the podocytic cytoskeleton and a concentration of some of its elements into

Split-hand/split-foot malformation (SHFM), also known as ectrodactyly, is a congenital limb malformation, characterized by a deep median cleft of the hand and/or foot due to the absence of the central rays. SHFM may occur as an isolated entity or as part of a syndrome. Both forms are frequently found in association with chromosomal rearrangements such as deletions or translocations. Detailed studies of a number of mouse models for ectrodactyly have revealed that a failure to maintain median apical ectodermal ridge (AER) signalling is the main pathogenic mechanism. A number of factors complicat

A 5 months old female baby was presented with congenital abnormality at the outpatients' department. She had syndactyly of proximal and middle phalanges of middle and ring fingers of both the hands and third and fourth toes of right foot. Ocular examination showed absent eyebrows and eyelashes and shallow orbits. The diagnosis was made of cryptophthalmos--syndactyly syndrome. She was operated upon. The outcome of the operation was very poor and the end result was disappointing.

Anthropometric and craniofacial profile patterns indicating the percent difference from the overall mean were developed on 34 physical parameters with 31 white, mentally retarded males (23 adults and 8 children) with the fra(X) syndrome matched for age with 31 white, mentally retarded males without a known cause of their retardation. The fra(X) syndrome males consistently showed larger dimensions for all anthropometric variables, with significant differences for height, sitting height, arm span, hand length, middle finger length, hand breadth, foot length, foot breadth, and testicular volume.

Split-hand/foot malformation 1 (SHFM1) is caused by chromosomal aberrations involving the region 7q21.3, DLX5 mutation, and dysregulation of DLX5/DLX6 expression by long-range position effects. SHFM1 can be isolated or syndromic with incomplete penetrance and a highly variable clinical expression, possibly influenced by sex and imprinting. We report on a new family with five affected individuals with syndromic SHFM1 that includes split-hand/foot malformations, hearing loss, and craniofacial anomalies, and an inv(7)(q21.3q35) present both in the proband and her affected son. Sport climbing is associated with unique upper- and lower-limb injuries involving predominantly the hand, elbow, and shoulder, and to a lesser extent the foot. Many pathologic conditions are limited to sport climbing. Physicians treating sport climbers should be aware of these unique injuries and overuse syndromes. This article presents an overview of orthopedic problems (injuries, overuse syndromes, and fractures) resulting from sport climbing. Sport climbing is defined in the context of existing mountain sports, and its characteristics and technical terms are presented. The etiology, diagnos

Hand and foot deformities, known as "striatal deformities", and other musculoskeletal abnormalities such as dropped head, bent spine, camptocormia, scoliosis and Pisa syndrome, are poorly understood and often misdiagnosed features of Parkinson's disease and other parkinsonian syndromes. These deformities share some similarities with known rheumatologic conditions and can be wrongly diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, or other rheumatologic or orthopedic conditions.
